The main change for the side was Blakey out with concussion. The team is now 4-0 with the last game next week in Launceston. Tasmania will be tough in their home town and despite the swans now winning the championship, it will be a challenge.

The game against the Lions was a bit of a disappointment, despite the win. It seems like the boys are now turning their minds to trying to make Allies which is making the play a little less team oriented. In terms of performances Bell and Hardman have shown a few flashes of brilliance over the carnival but on the whole have been underwhelming. Blakey is exceptional in ability and work rate. The overagers have been very strong, particularly Brown, Osborne and Maze. Clearly doing the entire pre-season with the senior swans via the NDS program has been key to the swans under 18 success. The overagers are physically bigger, which contributed strongly to the swans ability to over power the opposition especially in the midfield.

I think the players who have emerged out of the carnival are Mitch Rogers, Bailey Stewart, Sam Wicks and Luke Scrivenic. These are the guys that have consistently been in the best players along with Blakey and the over agers. Other than Mitch they have not tended to get much press due to the media's obsession with father sons.

Mitchell Rogers is a tall forward much in the mode of the McGovin brothers at Adelaide and West Coast. He has played in the backline for the vast majority of the carnival and showed exceptional judgement in the air and on the ground. I would expect Mitch to go into allies, and is actually firming as a draft prospect hitting a sweet spot as a tall backman.

Bailey Stewart is a 180cm mid utility from East Coast Eagles. Bailey is a strong player who has done very well at times.

Sam Wicks is a 180cm mid utility who has been used in the mids and wings for the entire carnival. He is fairly lightly built at this stage and will benefit from more pre-seasons. Sam has led the tackle count for the swans and laid 12 tackles in the GWS game, nullifying Spargo whenever he was in the middle. Sam also features highly in contested ball and goal assists and has been in the best players 3 games out of 4. Sam does much of the midfield gut running for the team, especially closing down the corridor and getting into the backlines.

Luke Scrivinic is around 182cm and plays mainly on half forward flank. Luke has improved during the carnival and had a purple patch on the weekend that got everyone's attention. He has a bit of an x factor about him and is an interesting player re draft.

After the Carnival finishes the boys will move to the Allies. As I understand it there will be a squad of 50 selected for the Allies with trial games to select the final team. If the swans take a clean sweep of the carnival I would expect they will be pushing to have 10-12 spots out of the 50. No doubt this is where the politics will go into over drive, and we will see if the swans success has actually dispelled the myth that only players from the Riverina are any good. If the swans get 10-12 spots then the players mentioned above will likely get a chance to play in the trial. Those that can on to play in the Allies will get exposure to be drafted.

Thanx Barracuda. Do you know where the game against tassie is played? Have family down there n they might be interested in going. Scrivinic had injuries last year so I'm assuming it hampered his development a bit. So can you see him being a ND chance or possible rookie? Rogers isn't eligible for Sydney under academy rules but what round in the ND do you see him as a possible pick? Is wicks a possible draftee? as that tackle count is pretty good for juniors. Again excellent posting cuda????

Hi Boddo. The game is in Launceston. It is so hard to judge if any of them will get drafted. The front runners were always Bell and Hardman but they seem to have dropped off a bit. I just don't know if the success of the Academy will translate into actual draft picks. My gut tells me that it will take a few more successful carnivals before Sydney establishes itself as a strong draftable zone.

However things are going in the right direction and there is no doubt that the swans academy is an elite program, equal or better than anything else in the country. Hopefully in the years to come it becomes a football factory. Sam Wicks is a very disciplined, hard working player who is not flashy. He does a lot of the team orientated stuff like blocking, tackling, winning contested ball, goal assists and gut running. He rarely gets injured and has maintained a very consistent level of performance of a number of years in Premier League for Manly and the Academy. I know Jarrod Crouch rates him highly, but then Jarrod was that type of player as well. He has a lot of physical growth left to come and most likely will be retained by the swans in their NDS academy program.

It's all going to help the depth in Sydney and NSW football generally with many of these graduates moving into the local club system and continuing to play footy through their 20s. Sure, some might give it away or try their luck interstate, but it'll all help.

The Swans academy team successfully completed the clean sweep this afternoon, just getting home against Tasmania (in Tasmania). Hardman kicked four, including the team's only two goals of the final term.

I would take anything from that source with a huge grain of salt - they (very very) occasionally have scoops, but could just as likely be a 'plant' from an interested party as well, just to stir trouble.

He'll have much more competition for a spot at Brisbane as a big forward than almost any other club. I won't be happy if that is true. Why enter the academy system and gain all the benefits if you aren't going to return the favour?

Agree, authors write under anonymity and clearly have an anti-Swans agenda. (Note the snide comment about what it would say about the Swans if Blakey doesn't want to come to the Swans. So what would it say about North if he wants to go to Brisbane? No comment about that I see.)

Very very unreliable source. Or it could be a story put out there by sources from the club to say to Norf he's never coming to you no matter what happens or also could be an under the table deal with Brisbane, if the AFL decides to change the rules again, n that he spends a year there n then comes back to Sydney thus he ends up at Sydney n Brisbane get a 1st draft pick. I've got a feeling that Sydney have finally decided to play the games Melbourne clubs play n fight fire with fire. Blakey lives in Sydney, would have friends in Sydney, goes for Sydney n has family in Sydney. And this story has come from nowhere just as the Norf mouthpiece has unloaded in the media. I could be wrong but it is very very suspicious to me.

Well done lads on a clean sweep, a truly brilliant result.

I hate the reference to "Cheap Talent" that putrid article mentions, what about the years we have spent developing him.

I think it's a beat up but ultimately we'll just have to respect Nick's decision

Nick has been at the last two academy games, including flying to Tasmania on the weekend. It looks like he is pretty heavily involved with the swans.

Great result for the Academy. Now it will be interesting to see who goes to the allies team. You would expect the selectors to initially select players that are expected to be in draft contention, perhaps 3-5 per team. That would account for about 20 of the 50 player squad. Of the remaining 30 I imagine the swans would be looking for around 6-8 spots. This could give some of our lesser known kids a bit of a go.

Not sure where to post this as I can't find the Academy thread but some great results over the weekend. From the Swans Academy Facebook page:

                              U17 Futures Game
                              Swans Academy v Giants
The Academy's future looks promising, with a dominant display against the Giants this afternoon at Blacktown, with an impressive 80 point win. A large number of players put their hand up for NSW selection for the game against TAS in July. Well done to all players!
                              Swans Academy - 17:18:120
                              Giants Academy - 6:4:40
Goals - Veerhuis 5, Flanagan 3, Meacham 2, Close 2, Graham, Mullen, Kilpatrick, Blanchfield, Brasher
Best - Soffe, Job, Graham, Veerhuis, Mullen, Close, Cameron

                              And:

                              U16 Academy Series - Game 2
Another solid team performance by our U16 squad today, recording a 7 goal win against our Academy rivals.
Our defence was staunch, led by Schuback, Loughnan, Cooper, Geddes and Martin. Our potent midfield worked hard from start to finish - Brewer, Gaden, Parker, Dol, Swaney, McGrath, Watling, Adams - gathering plenty of possessions and using the ball effectively. Rayner, Ellem, Wilks and Reed were also dangerous up forward. All up, an impressive team performance.
                              Swans Academy - 12:14:86
                              Giants Academy - 6:4:40
Goals - Barling 3, Rayner 2, Brewer 2, Parker 2, van Huisstede, Ellem, Maguire
Best - Brewer, Loughnan, Parker, Adams, Gaden, Watling, Swaney, Schuback

We seem to be dominating the GWS academy this year. We have beaten them in every game so far. Are we getting better or is the GWS academy getting worse?
