Saw a lad by the name of Lewis play for SA at the Championships today. Solid left foot midfielder in the Ryan O'Keefe mould who would fit the profile of a Swans midfielder.Comment

I watched yesterdays games and the standard was very high, there really is a lot of highly promising talent available. Rankine was just wow, but small forwards are never Number 1 picks, guys like Patton, the lesser McCartin, Boyd are number ones! Go figure.
The player who caught my eye was Jordan Clarke a HBF from WA, would fit right in at the Swans but I reckon he'll be top 20.
Blakey was very influencial, a lot of growing into his frame to do but just has quick footy brain. What he costs will depend on which clubs have top ten picks and that's still up in the air. Doubt we'll see a bid before 8/9 which would be good. So many players are tied to clubs through academies, F/S, NGA's that draft will be very compromised.Comment

Twomey in his U18 wrap up mentions 6 players as likely top 5 and Blakey not among them :-)

Paul Roos was asked on Triple M this morning why he/Swans picked Veszpremi at Pick 11 instead of Rioli who went to the Hawks on the very next pick at No 12. Roos said it is easy looking in hindsight with that decision, but at the time the only vision available with Rioli was playing footy with Scotch College (Melb). He looked liked a inside midfielder but there was some concern with his running. Vezpremi had displayed some impressive performances including kicking 18 goals in a match (if I heard right). Roos added there were 11 other teams who also overlooked Rioli, as players like Dangerfield, Kruezer, Cotchin & McEvoy were taken in top 10 of that 2007 draft

Gary Buckenara who was the Hawks recruiter at the time was interviewed about Cyril on a podcast a few weeks ago. He said that a tape of Rioli's highlights conveniently went missing and also mentioned that Rioli said in interviews with other AFL teams that he wasn't interested in training which of course put the coaches right off. Whether this was done on purpose to ward off other suitors is up for conjecture.
It's been some time since I read Emma Quayle's book The Draft which covered Rioli and Vesz amongst others, but my recollection was that Maxfield pushed really hard for Veszpremi at the time.Comment

In regard to Rioli, it really is starting to sound like the Swans and all the other teams were the victims of some Hawthorn draft cheating (and who's surprised with that?!) with Cyril's active involvement and blessing.....scummy behaviour!Comment

I'm more annoyed by the "Now that Rioli has gone Hawks can pick up Sloane and Lynch." What did the man say? 'You can't have everything'. O'Maera, Mitchell, Sloane, Lynch. Seems that the Hawks can have whatever they want.Comment

The info on this is nothing recent. Uggs info is 100% correct and came out shortly after his draft. Cyril wanted to go to Hawthorn, and someone (obviously Hawks and someone else assisting them) made his highlight reel disappear. He also made it very clear in the club interviews that he wanted to stay in Melbourne.Comment

I'm not sure that it was necessarily scummy behaviour. My recall of the book about that year's draft was that Rioli and Hawthorn had worked hard on the relationship, and that Rioli had indicated that his preference was to be in Melbourne. Why would you draft him in such a circumstance?

I wish Hanners was going better this year. Maybe GC would offer him a contract too big to refuse. I would trade him and our 1st round pick for GC's 1st rounder (probably pick 2). I would take Izak Rankine with that pick. I would use the extra cap space from trading Hanners to get Luke Dahlhaus as a FA. And get Blakey by using our 2nd round picks.Comment
