Hanners for Saints 2019 second rounder. Any thoughts about Saints pick 4 for Hanners and our pick 13 is just wishful thinking, you and I wouldn't do it nor will Saints.

Will get done as soon as the trading window opens. Gives us salary cap certainty from opening bounce and nails an early second for next year.

If Hanners is leaving for basically an extra year contract worth $800k to a club who's is unlikely to be a serious finals contender in next 4 years, tells me he himself is not confident that his body/form is going to come good & hold up. Otherwise he would've stayed, confident he would get a contract extension in 3 years time (aged 30). Saints are obviously confident his body/form will hold up.

We are in a position to drive a hard bargain, which must involve St.Kilda's first round pick so that it can be used to get a gun like Sheil or involve players like Billings or Acres plus trade pick. Talk of St.Kilda's 2019 2nd round being suffice in getting trade done does not sit well with me. We need to get quality midfield talent for Hanners as we have enough developing young talent as it is. Don't care about the potential salary cap relief. If we don't deal that is right for us, Hanners stays. We could revisit again in 12 months like Carlton did with Bryce Gibbs who got 2 x 1st rounders for him!

Agree HARD BARGAIN, don't fall over swans. A first rounder for hanners(3*AA, multiple top B&F finishes, rising star ,still on 800k for 3 yrs and sts said to offer 800k for 4) surely worth a first rounder. Also no pay part of salary. I don't want him to go but if so thems the deal. Why has GS lost interest in LLoyd )hes another one we could trade and add a player and get back their #17 (ex cats) His disposal is below average even if he gets a lot of possessions, turnovers a lot.

All the media talk about Hannebery going and giving us cap relief, I would have thought Tippett leaving would have giving us plenty of cap relief.

              So, where are we at?

              Tippett stays on the list?
              Hannebery to Saints. deal done.
              Rohan to North. deal done.

Lloyd to GCS (I hope not)

              Delistings:
              Rose
              Towers
              Foote
              Pink?
              Marsh?

Fox, Newman and Robinson are borderline, but given they've all been played over the past month, it would be tough to delist them.

Where are we at with Maibaum?
And does AJ get another chance?

Of the rookies, Ronke comes onto the seniors. Bell and Amartey are keepers. Don't know enough about Styles and Brown

Saints will play finals soon. A lot of people tipped them this year to make finals. Adding a couple of experience players should make the difference.

You guys need to take your red and white coloured glasses off. If Hanners is going we are getting massive cap relief and as a result we are not getting a top 5 draft pick. Really sad to see him go, and I'll always love him even if he is in opposition colours, but if we can get either one top shelf, or two quality players in with the spare salary cap then it won't be a disaster.

As an aside who the f$*k was negotiating our contracts 2-4 seasons ago? Even at his best Hanners was not worth $800k per year. And why was Jack signed on to a ridiculously long term contract, I'd like to think he's being paid a pittance but based on our history he's probably still on $600k plus!

I think in an alternate universe, we would be in the middle of a premiership dynasty with Hanners and Jack still in top form and Tippett dominating in the ruck / forward position. Imagine if Hanners still had that gut busting outside run, Jack hard as nails on the inside, both delivering into a forward line with Tippett and Buddy kicking 100+ goals between them. I'm sure that was the clubs thinking with some of the recent list decisions. Unfortunately the opposite has happened with Tippett (and Buddy to a lesser extent) hobbled by injury and Hanners and Jack cooked at relatively young ages. With the benefit of hindsight, we would've let Jack and Hanners go to keep Mitchell and traded Tippett (while he still had currency) or Naismith for Nankervis. Maybe even gone a bit harder to get Josh Dunkley as well. Would've been a pretty brave list manager to make those moves back in the day but I suspect if they had (and I preface this by saying I would've thought they were crazy at the time had they done this), we may have had solid tilts at both 2017 and 2018 flags. Hindsight such a wonderful thing.............

I acknowledge that those are good points and would have been taken into consideration at the time but:

Hanners even at his peak was not a $800k per season player, especially on a 5 year deal
Jack didn't fall off a cliff this season, he has been mediocre for the last 3 seasons now.
Combine this with the already massive contracts we had Buddy and Tippet on and its just seems like mismanagement

Of course all of this would be much easier to swallow had we actually won that 2016 premiership

Hindsight, at the time we were all rapt with the signing of our stars to long term contracts and couldn't believe our luck getting Tippett and Buddy for free! Let's not try and rewrite history, our situation is what it is, just need to now move forward.

I agree 707. Starting with Hanners. Is there anyway we can move Jack on as well? Be great to pick up a couple of mature age mids from VFL / SANFL (? Mitch Grigg ? Michael Gibbons ? Anthony Miles) who we could pay less to play better footy then these 2. Having Hanners and Jack in our team at times was like going into a game with 2 less players.

Agree. That's a fair outcome. He hasn't played any decent footy for 2 years now and isn't getting any younger.

If he has a good preseason, I'm sure he will be good for the Saints...but given his poor disposal, not great.

Most importantly, the cap relief makes it a winner deal for the Swans....As long as we don't agree to pay any of his existing contract.

                            Not soft deals here thanks.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

What it all adds up to is this: losing Hannebery is not a zero-sum game. There is more at stake than trade or treasure and I'm uncertain if anyone realises what that final price paid will be.

Nice way to completely ignore the contents of my post

I'm not re-writing history when I say that Hanners was never worth $4m over 5 years and that Jack's form was already on a downhill trajectory when he signed the long term deal

The fact that we were paying Buddy and Tippett so much is exactly why those deals shouldn't have been so generous
