      Hanners
Given how early in the season that this story was first leaked, it would be reasonable to assume that most of the details of the Hannebery trade have already been worked out. Hanners informing the coach that he wants to leave just makes it official.

I don't know what we want to achieve from this trade, other than freeing up cap space. Even though most commentators fell it's a bad move on the part of St Kilda, Hannebery does bring more to the table than just his playing ability, which some have questioned due to his poor year. His leadership, work ethic and training standards should help a team like the Saints, who have looked dispirited for large portion of games. Also, having failed to secure any player of significance in the trade market, Hanners is a sort of coup for them, in the sense that they can at least say that some AA player sees them as a destination club.

It's hard to say what we will want for Hanners, or what he's truly worth. The main options seem to be:
      • Swapping Hanners and pick 13 for pick 4. This values out to a pick in the mid twenties. Fox News reported that the Saints are adamant they won't trade pick 4 for Hanners, but that not exactly the same as saying they wouldn't trade pick 4 for Hanners plus pick 13.
      • The Saints 2019 2nd round pick, likely to be in the mid twenties, so is roughly equal value to the previous scenario. But the first one seems a lot better because of the quality of player available this year at pick 4.
      • Swapping for a player. Some mention has been made that Billings or Acres could be part of a swap for Hanners. At first glance, that seems slightly better for us.

If we end up with the Saints 2019 2nd rounder, it gives us a lot of trade power this year, with 2 second round picks for both this year and next.

Geelong have 4 picks in the 50s range that will probably end up to around 800 value points which can be used to get Rohan and we can use for the Blakey bid match. We might be able to use both our first round pick and a second round pick for trades, leaving 1 second rounder and the scraps from the Geelong Rohan trade to get Blakey. In such a case we will probably only draft 2 players in main draft.

I'm still of the opinion that Hanners is a star. Form is temporary. Class is permanent. 3 x All Australian. They don't come along every day. This has the potential to be the classic buy low play from St Kilda and we could get burnt.

We saw this coming, but now it's out, it's quite sad that he wants to leave. Particularly on top of Shaw leaving as well, by choice. Didn't see either coming 12 months ago. Can't help but wonder about it.

                    That is very cryptic.

Do you think the Swans are behind this? That Hanners and others are abandoning Longmire? Or none of the above?

                      Ok Swanwolf.

My latest attempt to explain your cryptic comment is that (1) Hanners is being traded to make way for Darcy Moore.

Part (2) is more complicated. You are implying Moore’s arrival will stop Buddy kicking another 83 goals but I don’t get why?

                      (A) Buddy is about to retire and Moore is needed as his replacement.
                      (B) Buddy is going to play a different role after Moore arrives.

                      Am I getting close?

Can you imagine. Rohan goes. Hanners goes. Maybe AJ goes. Buddy goes. Tippett still on the list, but gone. Shaw gone. The club would fall apart quicker the the Bulls did when MJ departed after the 2nd 3-peat. I’m scared!

The only role Moore would likely fill, would be running laps with Reid and the rest of the rehab group.

You're thinking along the same line as me. The last two seasons he's been injured and/or hasn't had a pre season. I'm confident hat his 2019 will be better than the previous two season but I still don't think he'll ever get back to his peak.

If class was permanent then Bobby Skilton would still be out there.

Old father time catches up with everyone. Some quicker than others.
Remember Hanners was playing brilliantly and maturely from about the age of 21-26.
6 years at the top of the tree. A pretty good run.
