The story about the Swans picking up a portion of Hanners' salary was just Neil Cordy's opinion. I really don't think anyone knows. It's the kind of thing that's hard to work out for clubs until after the season ends and its more clear how things stand cap-wise. It could be a negotiating point.Comment

That's journo speculation.....anything to make it sound tough on the Swans. I wouldn't pay much attention to that. Typical Vic-centric attitude to everything they report.
However, if the AFL have anything to do with it........
Edit: Just realised the reporter was Neil Cordy.....whoops! Oh well, a misguided 'opinion' then......

I have a dumb question to ask.
If Hannebery asked to be traded, why would Sydney have to pay part of his salary. The way I see it, Sydney are not so much trying to offload, but he seems to want out. Could it not be possible that he has agreed to go to the Saints for a lesser amount over a longer period, just as long as he can get back to Melbourne.
If it was a case of us trying to get rid of him, then I understand that maybe another team would say we will take him off your hands if we pay part of his salary. But if he wants out and a trade is set up, its up to Hannebery and the new club to work amounts and Sydney should be free of all his salary.Comment

As quite a few others have mentioned, it is possible we want to free up salary cap space . If that means offloading Hanners and paying say 100-150k of a contract, to free up the 600-650-k to target somebody we are into really into , I have no issue with that . Obviously it is preferable to not pay anything to offload a player but if there is a bigger picture in sight than who gives a rats. PS I think the swans may have had chats with hanners and Rohan , similar to the hawks the other year with Mitchell and Lewis at hawthorn that if they were interested in a move it could be mutually beneficial. Newman too possiblyI have a dumb question to ask.

There may also be a trade off between the Swans paying some or none or his salary, and the trade return they get - ie if they agree to pay some of his salary, they can (should) expect better picks or players back in return.I have a dumb question to ask.

The inside word I received few weeks back is the Saints will definitely pay 100% of Hannebery's $800k X 4 salary. Deal won't involve Swans paying any part of his remaining 3 year contract. The story about the Swans picking up a portion of Hanners' salary was just Neil Cordy's opinion. I certainly hope that 'inside word' is true!
.......and I don't think we should have to.

That’s a Columbo like question, quite to the point. If Swans are paying any of Hanners salary then he’s being encouraged to leave. If not he may genuinely be the instigator of his move back to Melbourne.I have a dumb question to ask.

If you believe Neil Cordy, it’s the former.Comment

Not staying your inside word isn’t accurate but I’ve been on this forum for nearly ten years and I could take all the ‘inside words’ I’ve heard on here with a grain of salt. Other than Uggs, he seems to have a decent source .

Stoddart played two games and played in the forward line in both. The first was the first game that Rohan missed, and the second one Rohan was back but Papley missed. So while he may be pegged more as a HBF long term, that's not the position he was picked to play in.In the first 11 rounds he was selected for one game then dropped immediately 3 times despite putting up reasonable numbers in two of those games. Many others who regularly stunk it up continued to be selected in the 22 in front of him.
Stoddart is one who was selected before him on at half back, but more to the point he was selected and then continually played out of position at half forward where the strength of his link play and long kicking wasn't utilised to its full potential
He's not a superstar by any means, but if a smart club picks him up then they'll get value out of him that Longmire wasn't able to
Newman played a bit in the forward line in the second half of 2017 and was generally less effective in that role than when he played in the backline.
I am still not sure of who was undeservedly getting picked in the back line and keeping Newman out. Opportunities for him to play senior football opened up when McVeigh got injured. And then when he was ready to return, Jones was suspended for two weeks. And by the time Jones was back, Nick Smith was done for the year.
I don't mind him as a player but we seem to agree that he's not really "best 22". And while we did have injuries, the longer term ones were to our taller players, not those with whom Newman was vying for a spot.Comment

I read somewhere that the swans weren't happy with Newman's performance and attitude earlier in the year so there was no contract offer. We will find out shortly if things have changed.
The thing I hate about being out so early in the finals is we have to wait so long to find out who's coming and going!Comment

Bear in mind that the season isn't yet over for the club. The NEAFL final is still to be played. While I realise that Hanners and Rohan aren't going to be part of that (and Newman probably not either, despite being eligible to play), I kinda wish there was nothing emerging about any Swans players looking to leave until the NEAFL side has also finished their season.I read somewhere that the swans weren't happy with Newman's performance and attitude earlier in the year so there was no contract offer. We will find out shortly if things have changed.
