There would probably be 2-3 players at each club on $800k plus salaries.

Given we already had Buddy and Tippett on those kind of dollars I think it was a bit excessive. Hanners was excellent but he's a step below the elite midfielders like Cotchin, Dangerfield etc. who would be on that kind of money

I still think he was probably worth $650k maybe $700k at a stretch, but that additional $100 - $150k might have enabled us for example to keep Mitchell

Jack didn't fall off a cliff this season, he has been mediocre for the last 3 seasons now.
Combine this with the already massive contracts we had Buddy and Tippet on and its just seems like mismanagement

Of course all of this would be much easier to swallow had we actually won that 2016 premiership
You can add losing Membrey and Mitchell to that mismanagement. In relation to Hanners Melbourne clubs were offering him $1m p.a. at the time and the club was forced to increase its offer. In hindsight they should have let him go.

Dean Towers comes to mind. Hanners is another. AA too.
Back in the day... Leaping Leo - he had the "decision making skills of a junkie" (Quote MMM.)
I think Aliir is ok with the ball... he can only get better.
Hanners is my bugbear - the way he consistently hands it over is under par for a professional who used to have a fabulous footy brain.
Maybe he should get back on the wine???
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Will people please stop mentioning Membrey's departure as a mistake. He only kicks goals against the duds and doesn't always get a game for one of the weakest teams in the comp.

And you can add Nankervis to that never-to-be-mentioned-as-a-mistake list. He gets a game at Richmond because they have no other ruckman. If we had kept him and shipped off Naismith to Richmond instead, people would now be apoplectic about how he was dropping it down Martin and Cotchin's throat rather than over-blowing the Nankervis reality of making "an honest contest". (a poor man's Sinclair)

This talk of Parker leaving and Buddy following Hannebery has made me on edge. They sound like complete BS but I feel like since the 2016 Granny loss there has been a real rot in Swans/"Bloods" culture that needs to be rectified in order for us to keep all our gun players and attract other players.

Nobody has mentioned Parker except some journo who believed Parker would be a good fit for Essendon. In terms of Buddy, there has not even been a press rumour except him needing more help, just some cryptic reference by someone in the thread.

In terms of the bloods culture I think it is alive and well evidenced by last year doing what no team has ever done by losing the first 6 games and still making the finals, and this year being dead in the water with four games to go and then beating three of the teams that are still alive and having a moral victory over one of the others. (as well as beating the WCE twice in the year). Agreed, our last final was terrible, but we had a heap of burnt out kids, six of whom had played under 40 games (two less of them than 20), plus Buddy, Joey and Parks (probably others too) carrying injuries, plus at least another five of our best twenty two unable to play.

The club is in a ferment. I'll say nothing more that causes further disruption until the storm has passed.

There was an allusion to unrest in the coaching ranks on the Age podcast several weeks ago. They implied that Dew's position became untenable due to clashes with Horse over game plan. Along with Dew, every line coach departed last year. Now one of our brightest coaching prospects Shaw is leaving.

But I've heard nothing about player unrest. If it's true, then I would imagine Longmire's position will be in serious jeopardy. However I'm not clear why Hanners has asked for a trade, or sure that this wasn't initiated by the club. However I could imagine players having frustration with some aspects of the coaching.

                          Ferment!?!?

Aliir and Jones are 2 of our best in Disposal Efficiency at 80% and 79.46% respectively. Both are just slightly better than Jake Lloyd. But I understand why people get nervous when they have the ball, as they play a high risk-reward game. There's probably not much difference in being nervous and being excited.
