We are showing all the signs of a team with serious cap issues.
    1) Buddy's deal starting to kick in to the highest pay period.
    2) Tippet still on the books for 2019. Meaning we maxed out cap in 2018.
    3) Talk of off-loading contracted players in Rohan and Hannerbury.
    4) Signing on "cheap" older players in Reg and McVeigh.
    5) All-Australian quality players like Lloyd still unsigned.

    Not pretty.

What it all adds up to is this: losing Hannebery is not a zero-sum game. There is more at stake than trade or treasure and I'm uncertain if anyone realises what that final price paid will be.
Sorry for pressing. Perhaps your posts should be removed?

I think it looks more likely that Hanners goes for Saints 2019 2nd rounder, but I have an idea about how we could still get their pick 4:

Rohan is traded to North Melbourne for a swap of our pick 13 for their pick 11 + 2 late picks we use for points in the Blakey bid match (now 53 and 64). North send pick 13 to PA for Polec (11 would have been slightly too high IMO). So North get Rohan for peanuts.

Now with pick 11, only being 7 slots behind pick 4, is not such a big downgrade for the Saints to get Hannebery.
Pick 4 = Hannebery + Pick 11 seems a very reasonable deal for the Saints. It's 700 points or a pick 27 equivalent.

On paper, it doesn't really look so good for us, but in the end we get Pick 4 (likely to be either Bailey Smith or Izak Rankine) for Hanners and Rohan, 2 highly rated players who have done little the past couple of seasons to help the club.

It is the nature of deals (contracts) with players, that some will work out well, and some won't. It's completely
unrealistic to expect them all to work out well. It's even unrealistic to think we won't enter into some contracts
that will turn out to be complete shockers. But mostly they work out. Otherwise we'd be trying to jettison most of
our list at end of every season. For every failed deal there are three or four Rampe, Reg, Nick Smith, JPK
deals where the players have provided great service for the cap space they take up. I think people forget we
are in the finals every year, and being able to do that is in large part due to some really good list management.

I'm not re-writing history when I say that Hanners was never worth $4m over 5 years and that Jack's form was already on a downhill trajectory when he signed the long term deal

The fact that we were paying Buddy and Tippett so much is exactly why those deals shouldn't have been so generous
Hanners was a complete and utter star. Entering his prime years in terms of age. He was worth $800k at the time in my view. We weren't to know what was to follow in terms of his body.

State of Play - Part 4

In the previous 3 parts the focus was on our forward and defensive setup. That accounted for 12 players, 6 on each line. The midfield group includes 1 ruckman plus 9 midfielders, including bench rotations.

Here's a list of likely AFL level midfielders sorted by age (at the start of next season):
                    1. Kennedy 30
                    2. Parker 26
                    3. Cunningham 25
                    4. Jones 24
                    5. Hewett 23
                    6. Heeney 22
                    7. Mills 22
                    8. Dawson 22
                    9. Florent 20
                    10. Ling 20
                    11. Stoddart 19

What strikes me most about the list is that we have 2 more midfielders than we need to fill the numbers, without having to rely on mature depth (like Jack or McVeigh) or any of the current depth players, like Robinson, Newman or Fox. So as far as numbers go, it doesn't look to be crisis.

The second thing that catches my attention is the age demographic: There's Kennedy, a gap of 4 years, then a fairly close bunch of players who have probably yet to reach their peaks. We have quite a large developing midfield group which we will have to rely on now. We are no longer the team that most outside commentators talk about. We are actually the team they say we should become. The players are there, but are many are hardly known outside the club.

We are clearly committed to having this group succeed. It's a group, excluding JPK, that can stay together for the next 7 years. This is what the list managers have been doing the past 5 years. Only time will tell if this midfield group is good enough to be the midfield of a premiership team, and it doesn't look likely for next year, but just might be for 2020.

It would be nice to add another quality midfielder, either through the draft with a traded in pick 4, or via a trade or FA acquisition, Gaff being the only one left not committed to a club, so looking less likely.

One way or another our pick 13 is likely to go in a trade so it can get more mileage than just spending it on Blakey.

Yep! While the cryptic stuff may be understandable to the poster, for the rest of us it makes no sense at all at this stage - perhaps it might in time, but who knows.

There's an article I just came across on SEN that asks a question I'd like to ask of RWOers:

"Who are the players that make you nervous when they have the ball?"

Dean Towers comes to mind. Hanners is another. AA too.

AA needs to be backed in his first 5 steps are quick enough to get him out of trouble to then compose himself
Jones isnt a defender, much more suited to a frantic mid
Hannas kicks are ordinary but the amount of times he held the ball and did a stupid handpass are even more startling

To reiterate id keep Parker over Gaff Shiel he is a must keep

If we are dealing with Saints surely Stevens gets a mention

There's some funny business going on with Jack Steven. Looks like he may want out of the Saints. If they were to give up Steven and take Hanners I'd be gobsmacked. But it is silly season.
