I believe that last night was Rose's "test" game. He got a chance and failed miserably. He'll be given away for free with a trade pick at the end of the year.

Two positive things from tonight. Ben Ronke and Tom McCartin. These kids are gold and they never give in. They tackle, chase, contest and beat much bigger and more experienced opponents. I love these guys. Ollie Florrent made a few mistakes but he was still very good.

Yes to all 3! Early goals from Ronke were a highlight.

Not sure why I stayed with the C7 broadcast to the end but I did, and Astbury had good things to say about McCartin in his interview. He's going all right especially given his age.

Agree that we don't have a great record off the bye. But I don't think the team played that poorly yesterday. They did a lot of things very well. They just came up against a very well drilled and skilful side who are playing with supreme confidence.

I'm almost disturbed by Alex Rance(d). He's a very good player but such a d@#&head. He was clearly staging when Buddy hit him in the neck - and the stupid umpire got sucked in big time. Rance(d) is a good looking guy - when he finishes with football he could get a job as an actor; he's already pretty good at it. It's so blatant - I don't know how his coach can say that allegations of staging are farcical.

Interestingly, the BF commentary has focussed more on Rance's tendency to embellish contact than whether Lance is in trouble, and there are a fair few who like to try and hang Franklin out when they have the opportunity (eg that he should have got weeks for the elbow that knocked out Hamling while trying to break a tackle). Only one poster - a Richmond fan - seems to think it was "clearly punch to the throat".

Problem is the incident in the GIF (from a previous Swans v Richmond match) also resulted in a free kick to Rance (as with the one last night made even worse by a 50m + goal).

While I fully understand the provocation Rance inflicts on Buddy, with all Buddy?s experience he really needs to be disciplined enough not to retaliate. It is always the retaliator who gets penalised (as the retaliation is the obvious infringement).

Who is this Ryley Beveridge clown at AFL.com.au. He's saying that Buddy fate rests between low impact (1 week) or Medium (2 weeks). Then goes on to to say that the elbow on Luke Parker is likely careless and will attract a fine!

Elbow to parker deserves a couple of weeks at least if you ask me - he knew exactly what he was doing. buddy may well get a week, it wouldn't surprise me.

The quality of journalism on the AFL website is ordinary at the best of times - but some of it is truly awful.

I really dislike the 10 metre protection zone 50s. It's too big a penalty for something so minor and it cost us a couple of goals..

I don't mind the idea of the protected zone, but it is ridiculous to give 50s when players do nothing to impact on the play. I.e. McCartins actions did nothing to impact on the play - led to the goal. The Hayward one, while it did influence the play, all he did was take over the mark. Were the Swans supposed to just let the man running off in front of the ball go by himself so that whichever swan it was stayed on the mark. Utterly stupid and cost us 2 important goals.

What was obvious to me sitting high above the game was that Richmond always had a loose player sitting off the pack on the defensive side, be that at a boundary throw in or marking contest or win the ball on the ground contest. They got the ball and there was always a player running off wide to comfortably receive. We had 3 to 4 players flying for a mark and no one down. It was particularly obvious when the ball went into our forward line. Was very frustrating to watch.

That has been an issue for us in every loss this season Nico - and always been a bugbear of mine, having multiple guys go for the same ball, often when there is no need for it. A bit more clever thinking and we would soon iron out that significant issue.

pss: Ling should not be allowed to call any Swans games, mainly so I don't have to listen to him.

Channel 7 has ruined Cling Wrap well and truly. He was nauseating in the quarter and a half I had commentary on. His (and the remainder of the commentary's team) replacement with some smooth jazz made the rest of the game much more bearable.

We have a lot of the pieces in place. It comes down to whether the team can a) find more from it's bottom handful of players (with different personnel if necessary. Is Longmire prepared to take a risk that a Fox or O'Riordan or Dawson can provide more than the current incumbents did last night?) b) can the team adhere to the discipline to run and carry more through the middle part of the ground, rather than release long panic kicks from half back?

That paragraph sums it up perfectly really. Our bottom 6 need to be putting in somewhere near the level of our bottom 6 in 2012 for us to be a hope in September.

He is going more than alright. He is going very, very well indeed if you ask me. Of course he needs to start hitting the scoreboard regularly, but he does so much so well already.

While the rest of the AFL community and media no doubt will not notice, imo the least of our worries Post-Buddy is our forward line structure. Assuming Blakey becomes the player we all hope, all the pieces are almost there already.

We got an audit and failed
but plenty to take out of the game.
Having Reid fit changes our side completely.
Reid, Buddy and McCartin causes match up headaches and brings
Heywood, Ronke and Paps into the game.

We certainly need to handle the pressure better with our disposal
But plenty of time to sort all this out in the run home.

Rohan attempted to play a defensive role on Vlastuin but failed: "I?m surprised that any team would let him [Vlastuin] play on his own. They didn?t last night Sydney, but he was far too good for Gary Rohan, he out bodied Rohan on a couple of occasions." Can Nick Vlastuin now be classified as an elite player?
