Our success managing JPK with his OP has gained traction with the JD camp

I’m sure that we could have the same success for JD

Ironically the best surgeons, doctors and therapists managing OP were in Melbourne over the last decade

    Times are changing
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Nico, it is all about the coffee. The only reason the Suns have been decimated and G Ablett Jnr refused to play for a couple
of years is because the local cafs around Metricon just couldn't get the grind right. The Swans really need to learn
from their mistakes and fly in a few baristas (and while they are at it some graffiti artists) from Melbourne and try and
recreate that Lt Bourke St vibe around the SCG.

Beg to disagree slightly on Ablett. Shafted Geelong for the big Lolly, then did the same to the Suns and sooked it up, faking a hamstring. He is such a miserable little tight wad that he reckoned the coffee was too expensive on the Gold Coast. Hope he plays on in the reserves all next season. He and Geelong deserve each other.

But I predict he will be all gung ho going into the season then fake another injury and say he can't go on when he loses all form. I love watching him being interviewed, he just oozes insincerity.

People think Horse has no door on his office because he has an open door policy. Not so, he had it taken off so players couldn't slam it on their way out. He is now thinking of putting in a revolving door or getting one of those mettle turnstiles from the archives in the South Melbourne footy ground. Once you are through one of those things you can't get back in.

My favourite story was how Jnr got the Suns to pay him $300K of his contract money earlier than scheduled, but then didn't
want to have to pay it back when he wanted to leave early.... classy.

LOL Nico. Those old turnstiles were brutal! Reckon they were made by suppliers to the prison system!

They have one of those at a toilet at the bus station at Korat City in Thailand. I was a bit worried I would disappear for good, but fortunately there was an attendant to help out the unfortunates who had trouble getting out. And you had to pay to use the loos.

Let’s say that if a player wants to disregard contractual obligations that they previously agreed to.

Let’s say that the player - rightly - has their own personal interests first.

And let’s say that by playing hardball and not rolling over to accomodate the wantaway players desire to return home to his girlfriend and be paid a truckload of money to achieve this goal, that the club can extract the best possible deal (in the best interests of the Club) to facilitate the players wishes, or else the player can 1) stay at the Swans 2) stay another year and try to orchestrate a trade again next year or 3) sit out of football until his contract expires.

What should the Club do (in the best interests of the Club - and consequently the players, members and supporters)?

I’m not saying they should, but there are 2 sides to every coin
As I wrote earlier, if we don't get what we want out of a potential trade, in theory, we should enforce Papley's contract. If that was to mean he sits out for 4 years or plays like a love sick puppy (both leading to his career going down the toilet) then so be it.

The problem with this is that we would get a reputation for being hard nosed and any player who was thinking they might want to go back to Melbourne ( or where ever else they're from) at some stage of their career, will potentially think twice about joining us.

I think overall we have a reputation as a club which regards the players's interests, whether that be personal or financial, highly. Whether that helps in our recruitment and retention though, I'm not sure.

Surry Hills and Redfern go ok in that regard.

I too admired the Giants for their stand on McCarthy. I also admired McCarthy for going Back to his WAFL club while he waited out his contract.

Frankly I think a few more examples of that happening would be of huge benefit to the competition.

I also think, the next attempt to tamper with the draft (or breach a contract) should result in de-registration for the player and the manager and draft penalties for any club involved might help too. But it can't/won't happen.

The draft and salary cap was working perfectly about 10 years ago when northern clubs had their academies, and they also had a retention allowance.

I dont know why the AFL decided to stuff it up with the version we have now which has killed GC before they even had a chance.

Too many fingers in the Pie. Dimitriou and Anderson probably got it right. Every one since has been a change merchant, with Hocking being the worst. They want to leave their egotistical mark on the game.

Geelong played hard ball on Kelly at the end of last season refusing to trade him unless they got a good deal and he produced a brilliant season for them this year. Right up in the Brownlow Count. I recall that he got 3 Brownlow votes in both games against us this year!

It looks like he will head West now but they will still get as much if not more for him now as they would have last year. A lesson for us in dealing with Papley?

That's a good point. Players in this situation would be pretty stupid to spit the dummy as by the time they are in a position to make their desired move, their worth would've dropped significantly, even if a club was signing on potential.

For example would North offer 800k to Papley if he sat out a season or two or played like a busted.

Kelly has played out of his skin, even though he would love to be back in Perth. In the process, he has significantly increased the size of his Perth based contract.

Let's hold Papley to his contract, unless we get a cracking deal.

This really does sound like a “honey I extended my contract” type of whoopsie that the trade talk is designed to fix. His value has gone up and he’s not in a position to change it for a few years so his manager starts trade rumours.

Interesting that GAJ is discussed in that light too because I remember a lot of talk about him being massively underpaid when he was in his prime at the cats (circa $350?) to keep the band together.

Really can’t see Papley going anywhere, still, despite all the chatter.
