I agree with you on this, I had the exact same thought watching his highlights for the 20th time this arvo. He has some attributes, his strength, power and size, that would make him an excellent inside bullocking midfielder. Not to mention the beautiful thumping right foot!

That’s not to say we have picked him for this reason , or that it will happen ( particularly with questions marks over his tank at this stage ), but watching him shrug off multiple tacklers and dish out a hand pass in the video clip, I certainly thought to myself; is Gould the JPK heir apparent we’ve been searching for ?

He looks like Reggie’s replacement to me

I hoped we’d draft Big Will as a Rampe replacement given he’s very good one on one, can play on talls and smalls and is a potential attacking weapon.

He’s maybe too good offensively to use as a lock down defender. Although If we can defend as well as Reg and run off his opponent that would be handy.

He allegedly used to be a sprinter so could be quick once he slims down further.

Yeah but Gould is going to really hurt opponents. I mean hurt. He hits like a runaway Mac Truck. He is quick and runs down rovers. That's not bad for someone 193 & 96 kilo. There is some footage of him bumping Gulden, he nearly knocked him out of the stadium. But to Errol's credit he bounced up and carried on abate a little groggier than before. I think Errol wi appreciate playing in the same side as Will

I'm not sure how he goes as a one on one defender, and this is something he may need to work on, but I think we are far better off developing him in defence. On the flipside, he lacks both the height and possibly the closing speed to excel as a KPD. But Reg was slower and both Rampe and Leo Barry were smaller and they found a way so I am optimistic he will be a brilliant defender. Everyone is comparing him to Shannon Hurn. I haven't seen enough of Hurn to know. But it's a nice comparison!

Plus, why do we want to turn him into an inside mid? Defenders are important too. In fact, especially at the Swans, defenders RULE! And we have inside mids and more in the pipeline. No need. If anyone is going to move from defence to the midfield let it be Mills!
So you have see a lot of Gould have you? I watched quite a few SANF G) lenelg match replays and I have had quite a different experience watching him. He runs down rovers. Disgard the Combine it was bull@@@@ and I don't think he took it seriously. Especially just after winning a Premiership with The Bays. He was still in celebration mode.

Gould is seen as an athletic big man who is quick. The best intercept mark in the SANFL. He also played a few lock down roles and did them easily and with aplomb. He is the all round footballer you want to play with. He's tough, strong, highly skilled, fast for his size and smart. He knows where a player will run and cuts, him off. He ran down far faster opponents because he is smart. Glenelg rated him the best tall defender to come out of The Bay. Now there have been some pretty handy defenders from Glenelg.

Don't worry about Gould he will play whatever role the club gives him but you are right he is not a mid and it would be stupid to turn a 193cm intercept king with elite disposal into a bullocking mid.

I agree. Why turn a good defender into a mediocre midfielder? Let him play to his strengths and he should be a good replacement for Reg.

All he has to do really is work on his skinfolds and work on his fitness.

Look I completely get the above arguments re: Gould, and he more than likely will end up playing the position he has excelled at as a junior. I think Ludwig was suggesting, which I agree with, is he also has some attributes which could ‘potentially’ make him a very good big bodied inside mid. Something many on here have been screaming out for. The argument of leaving him in his preferred position you could apply to a young Callum Mills also - Why turn a perfectly good inside midfielder into a defender ? But that hasn’t turned out so bad so far has it , even though I’d prefer him to move back to the middle. I certainly think they’d be mad not to at least throw Gould in a centre bounce here or there in the NEAFL to see how it looks, assuming he plays a few games in there before he earns a shot in the seniors.

Great article; really endeared me to him. Bloody stoked we have another Indigenous chap playing for the club. I have a good feeling about him.

Yes. I'm impressed we stuck to the plan. I was impressed with the video - that instinctive throwing himself at the footy. We need that @@@@.

JPK? He's similar dimensions, but a better kick than JPK by the sounds of it.

Looks a great project. Not ready now but the kind of guy who with a some seasons of hard work and high level development could turn into a ripper. Similar size to Dawso but quicker and without the laser guided boot. His highlights are exciting to watch.

Watching NEAFL next year will be really brilliant. I hope a lot of matches get fixtured at Lakeside oval (or as curtain raisers). Looking forward to seeing Ling, Reynolds, Rowles, Bell, McInerney, BOC, Warner etc etc, many of whom we haven't seen that much of. Also possible that if we have a good run with injuries we'll see some of the best 22 pushed down by new recruits. I won't be sorry if Squizzy, Gray and Brand are kept out by better performing teammates.
