Depends how much you consider a premiership worth. Tom Boyd has done nothing for almost every other game except the game that shall not be named in 2016

Lucky Tom Boyd got a 7 year deal @ a mill/year because it's looking like his next contract might be slightly more modest. Still steaming about 2016!

We've gone from one of the oldest to one of the youngest lists and remained competitive - tick

We've had some stunning success recently with players recruited out in the twilight zone of the drafts, Papley, Ronke, Aliir, McCartin - tick

The list no longer contains players who you knew never had ceilings higher than fringe 22 - tick

Players likely to retire this year are mainly now lesser contributors and can be replaced internally. Their retirement frees up more cap - tick

The list has all positions covered IMO, future changes will only strengthen the list - tick

We are in a position to attract a significant FA if we desire, unlike previously - tick

Can't remember when I was this bullish about the future, we have some stars in the making and even the rookies look highly likely types but obviously development players. So like someone else said, there's likely to be less discussion amongst ourselves this year on list management because the hard yards were put in previous couple of years.
The elements are almost all there for us to be a very fine football team in the near future. Maybe not 2019, maybe not 2020, but if it all falls into place we will in it up to our necks. It will need a lot of players to fulfill their potential, but I feel we are rebuilding nicely to say the least. 2019 might be up and down like 2018 was I feel, but there is a lot to like about the direction we are taking.

It's one thing to lose a GF because your team wasn't good enough on the day but to lose it due to incompetent or corrupt umpiring is something I'll never get over. I lost a lot of interest in the game that day.

With Maibaum being put on the long term injury list, the Swans are on the lookout for a replacement.

Sydney makes 11th hour bid to fill final list spot - AFL.com.au

They're flying in McLarty and McLean to check them out.....

PS: I see this has already been mentioned in the Maibaum thread.....

Might as well give one of them a shot. Likely to be a depth player but might turn into something more

Swans are lodging the paperwork to secure Hayden McLean from SANFL club South Adelaide.

                Sydney signs McLean - sydneyswans.com.au

PS: AGAIN I see this has been posted already on the Maibaum thread!! I think this thread is more relevant now....

Unfortunately it also says Franklin will miss round 1.

I feel positive about McLean recruitment. We need some KPP depth and he's a good size. Also has some good credentials: AFL Academy player, vice captain for Vic Metro etc. On the flip side, there must have been reasons why he didn't get rookie drafted. And we are selecting him very late in the piece, after other clubs have already taken the most promising leftover KPPs.

Anyway, we have nothing to lose. Scary for Maibaum though! Only got offered a late one year contract extension, now injured. Meanwhile we recruit Thurlow and now McLean. And he was already stuck behind Reg, Aliir, Melican.

Think the question mark on him at AFL level is mobility/agility. Seems to be similar sort of player to Nankervis who had similar queries (although Nank has a great tank to compensate).

Thurlow is a half back flanker/wingman, and McClean is a ruck/forward, I don't think he'll be competing with either of these 2

I don't know if the lad has played back before but you'd think that the reason we have recruited him is because we have a tall back problem. He is a ruck/forward. It seems a strange replacement for a key back.

Reid can play back , McCartin could be mooted as a back as well ( would suit his kicking ) .

I reckon the signing of McLean is as much cover for the vacated Tippett spot as for Maibaum. The club possibly thought it was already a little light on for ruck/forward options, and that's been made starker by the slower than expected recovery of Naismith and the knock that Cameron took to his knee in the GWS practice game, the severity of which we (outside the club) know little.

Reid can play back can he? I have yet to see any evidence of any success of that move. In fact the last time he played back for a whole match he cot 4 goals kicked on him.

McCartin is still not developed to play back. Not strong enough against key forwards that Grundy has to play on.

Look Mate , All going well this kid won’t play a game this year . He’s been Brought in as back up . As you said he’s not a defender, unfortunately it is now a week before the season ; after both the national draft and rookie draft have taken place , so it looks as though we took the best tall player available , regardless of his preferred position. A lot of young talls start out in one half the ground and end up playing most of their careers in the other half. You’re complaining he’s not a defender. Reid hasn’t strung enough good footy together at either end of the ground to suggest where he is best suited. And Mccartin has proven he can take a grab and compete and has a tank to boot. His best position could be in any third of the ground at this stage , or even all three. I’m just offering some solutions to your obvious displeasure at the swans taking this kid in the preseason SSP as he is more of a forward/ruck . Which other star defender do you think we should have taken instead wolf ?
