2019 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

Last year we were keen on 3 particular players that were discussed by the club in the media

Darcy Moore - 203cm kpp / Ruck

Aaron Vandenberg - bullocking 93kg midfielder

Tom Langdon - 3rd / intercept defender 189cm

These players were 2/3 year type contracts and significant $.

We may have been able to afford 2 of them but I didn’t think all 3 if all genuinely available UNLESS they were to be paid more in 2020 etc due to significant $ / retirements

Now we have another $1.2m minimum available after 4 retirements

Have we internally developed these roles adequately or less so ?

Are we still on the look out for these type of players and or better ?

It seems unlikely we would deviate so dramatically from these needs ?

Moore > joe Daniher

Vandenberg > ? Sam Powell Pepper / Caldwell / Clarke at bombers ?

Langdon > maybe Dawson in a swing role but I would prefer Dawson used more effectively for the team due to his kicking at goal ability. Thurlow was a disaster

It makes zero sense for us to pay in picks for JD this year when we could get him for free next year. It’s almost like Essendon want to move him now and get a good return rather than comp pick next year. Perhaps they are driving the speculation ? Maybe they are asking him to do a Hanners and take one for the team. Who knows , can’t see us bending over to take him this year though.

The market value for daniher is calculatable by working out his free agent compo pick worth next year (let's say pick 22. I don't have the formula) and then lowering it a little because we are getting him a year early. So somewhere between 15 to 20)

Except that next year he’s another year closer to retirement. Another year in a rehab setting that hasn’t got his body right. Maybe that wants to come this year (& might not want to next year). That this year Essendon might be more willing to trade him so that he has better currency for them than when he’s a restricted free agent. Or that next year other clubs might be in the market for a 200cm forward/ruckman. Perhaps a year working with our forward structure so that when Bud is a year close to the end, Joe works seamlessly with the other forwards in the absence of Bud.

I’m not saying we should be into him, but there are reasons why this year is better than next.

Do we? I reckon our forward line is developing fine, and will be even finer if Franklin is able to have a good pre-season and remain reasonably free from injury........

I don't mind Mills as a defender but I reckon he has to be part of the answer to our midfield challenges. He was too good of a ball winning midfielder at U17/18
Losing Jones and/or Papley would set our midfield back even further.

I cut and paste a couple of ur points and just like to add a few also:

We had obvious needs identified 2018 and went after them but took the leftovers in Menzel, Thurlow and Clarke vs Moore, Langdon and Vandenberg

I think given we went for Moore 2018 and we are now going for Daniher 2019 this appears we are going down the strategy of a 50/50 ruck FF player ie both 203cm Ruck height

We have also been super light on dollars spend on Ruckman last 24months

Last year and it appears this year we are not going for a 192cm or 195cm mobile forward who won’t feature in the Ruck and we have plenty mobile forwards anyway

I suspect we see flexibility in roles as absolutely key ie with a rotation of a FF Ruck and Reid most likely complimenting say a Daniher.

Dawson, Reid, McCartin all playing swing roles so much more last season and Blakey wing / forward

I agree if paps or Jones left we must be wanting Heeney and Mills to have more game time in the middle and back at their natural game

AND / Or

we have another key midfielder we are targeting. Ie we went after Vandenberg 2018 who i suspect we wanted in the midfield rotation.

We have players coming thru the forwards that are making Heeneys game time in the forwards less critical ie Dawson, McCartin and Blakey

Mills still had to help in 2019 in the cut off defender role because Thurlow was a spud

Heeney wasn’t match fit for 80% midfield game time due to his ankle injury half the season

Kinnear said it is more a midfield / HBF draft and a lesser draft then last year

Darymple said we need greater midfield genuine depth

It will be fascinating if our recruitment to can get what we want and maintain what we want

Welcome back liz! Where you been so long? Two posts in two weeks is not service as usual.

The problem with Daniher is that we don't really need him and Bud playing at the same time. (Of course if we have them both fit and firing at the same time we'll be finding a way of putting them in the same team - and at the expense of others.) The point is that good KPFs are really hard to come by and you have to grab them when the chance arises. Buddy has been struggling with his body the past couple of seasons and isn't getting on the park all the time and, quite apart from that, is coming towards the end of his career and will need to be replaced when he retires. Buddy is irreplaceable but a fit Daniher is fair fallback. So, I don't feel like we need Daniher next season at all if Buddy is playing and in many ways I think overall we'd be better off getting Daniher next year. One counterargument that I can add to those made by 09183305 is that, if Daniher has dramatic return to form and fitness next year, his price will go up and we might sign him cheaper now (in terms of salary even if we can get him as a free agent without trading next year).

Our heroes in that Essendon game were somehow stigmatized by their heroics. We've already gotten rid of our last 2 goalkickers and now the guy who blocked the kick-in looks to be off to Carlton.

And in exchange, we might trade 2 first round draft picks for the guy who took a great mark, only to make the fatal mistake of kicking the ball to Mills.

There must have been a meeting of the Sydney brain-trust to make sure we never have that kind of victory again.

I would love Danniher but not Pick 4 straight up

It certainly doesnt sound like KB is hell bent on using Pick 4.
So how about Pick 4 and 40 for GWS 11 & 13.
Then Pick 13 for Danniher which is above next years compensation

We lose Pick 4 and 40
We gain Pick 11 and Danniher

There certainly is a lot of risk associated with the Daniher deal (If it happens).

In terms of my earlier forwards comment, I was commenting on our inability to find enough goal scorers. Apart from Buddy and Papley we had few scoring options this year. Part of this reflected our inability to get it into the forward 50 enough combined with butchering that final, crucial kick. The better teams seem to have multiple scoring options e.g. WCE not only have Kennedy and Darling they have several indigenous goal scorers like Rioli and Ryan. Richmond and Collingwood also have multiple options towards goal. It makes it harder for opposition teams to match up on and stop. So goal scorers (large and small) are needed. Trading Papley, if this occurs, won't help either.

I think compensation picks are based on the length and value of the contract the free agent takes to leave. In Daniher's case, if he leaves at the end of next season as a free agent, it's likely to be a first round compensation pick that will be determined by where the Bombers finish next year, no?

Compo pick will be based on what we offer him as a free agent, no kniwing exactly but id say more than 600k 3 yrs would be a first round compo pick

The 900k is Essendons too, if he comes to us via trade we can redo the 900k 1yr to 4 yrs 750k or whatever we want, if we have mo ey we can front end him.

Also as a trade we have full flexibility in his contract to renegotiate at any time unlike with Bud where his deal and terms are totally fixed, id say Sydney would like to not do that again
