With Jones mooted to go to St Kilda, I wouldn't mind a swap for Blake Acres, whose name has also come up in trade whispers. I think their value is pretty close. That would leave pick 5 for the Saints to acquire Hill, so might make sense from their perspective. Coming from WA may not be an issue for Blake. He's been in Melbourne 6 years without any public issues about going home.

A fit Joe Daniher is a great addition to any forward line and there might be some eyes lighting up at Swanland imagining something similar to the dream forward line of Buddy, Tippett and Reid. That really never came to pass and I suspect this one with Joe Daniher will have its mishaps as well. Joe is probably worth a pick 4, but talk that Essendon should get 2 first round picks is ridiculous given the circumstances with injury concerns and free agency looming next year. It seems like waiting a year is the smart option, assuming Joe doesn't extend his contract with Essendon.

I would hate to lose Papley. He brings a lot to the team, especially his energy. But if he does go to a Melbourne club, we will find a way to replace him. It won't be the same kind of player, but we have a lot of options and one will work out.

I'm not too sold on Acres. Jones is clearly a little bit better and has been so consistently over their parallel. They were from the same 2013 draft and Acres was taken 4 picks after Jones, just outside the first round. Acres has played fewer games (75 compared to 91) and his stats are somewhat inferior to Jones resulting in them being ranked 187th and 211th by Stats Pro. Acres has had problems with his groins that put a big dent in his 2018 season and has been unconvincing this year with below average disposals disposals and goals playing as a midfielder. To take a more positive outlook, he is a good fit for our needs: he is a big bodied nearly 24 year old with an inside game and he might lift with another culture and group of players around him.

Lewis Taylor is a worthy suggestion as a replacement for Papley. He can fight it out with Ronke, Wicks, Foot etc for a spot. Taylor's career started brightly. He was an All Australian in his draft year and then pick 28 in the same draft as Jones and Acres. His good form at underage translated to senior level and played all games in his debut season and won the Rising Star award in 2014 (ahead of no less than the Bont!). That form continued in that he played 50 successive games from debut. He again played a full season last year (so he's played a lot of games - 112) but his career has stalled this year when he's only got 5 games and now he is languishing in the NEAFL stuck behind Charlie Cameron and now, seemingly, Zac Bailey. Not sure what the story is but if it's benign he could be good value pick up. Shouldn't cost too much given he is not getting time in the firsts. I think the Lions will be reluctant to let him go, and if they hadn't had such a good run with injuries he might be playing, but if they're not giving him a game he shouldn't be too hard to prise out.

Ahh upon enquiring from those excitedly messaging me, I think one was Facebook (always a reliable source ) and the other from a Fox footy citation. Well, those aren’t even set in warm porridge let alone stone. Moreover, TBH until the deal is done (which can’t happen until the trade period) Joe is still under contract as a Bomber, so they can just keep him - as much as we can keep Paps (although with a longer contract, we can hold on to Paps with a stronger grasp)


I wonder if there will ever be a time where to keep an absolute gun player, clubs say “it’s only a 1 1/2 hour flight from Melbourne to Sydney, fly up to train once or twice a week, play your matches, we’ll debrief during the week on FaceTime when we need to, we’ll have a designated rehab team in Melbourne, and we’ll keep you on the Swans list on those terms.” Messy, but if it was an absolute star and it was the only way to keep them, would you do it? (a more professional version of our initial foray into Sydney where half the players remained in Melbourne) ... just randomly musing with that one (but if the rumours of Buddy training less than a couple of hours for the entire season a couple of years ago - which I’ve always taken with a massive grain of salt - he could have just about lived in Perth and travelled each week just to play).

Tom Scully did this the entire time he was at the Giants. Sustainable for a while, but probably not more than a few seasons

I agree with your assessment comparing Acres and Jones. I too prefer Jones, but Acres is also a best 22 player. Neither one is a finished product. As you say, Jones has a few more points on the board after 6 AFL seasons. I like Jones' speed, but I like Acres' duel sided kicking and overhead marking.

I think now that Brad Hill has chosen STK, if Jones went to the Saints, it would almost have to be a player swap, given that Hill will cost the Saints their pick 5. I don't know if there are other hot destinations for Jones. My feeling now is that he's staying.


The vibe seems to be that Daniher will be coming to the Swans, but doing the deal is not going to be easy. Daniher is a great #2 ruckman. He competes well in the ruck, being a ruckman sized player, and is a real weapon around the ball, similar to Buddy, with his quickness and long kicking. Maybe the Darcy Cameron to Collingwood story takes into account that Joe is coming to the Swans and there won't be any room for another forward/ruck. A fit Naismith probably puts Sinclair way down the pecking order for playing forward-backup ruck. I think the Swans will try to get a 2020 pick for Darcy; Maybe Darcy + one of our picks in the 50s for Collingwood's 2020 2nd rounder, which will be calculated as a mid 30s pick.

The Swans want to keep Papley. He extended his contract to cover 3 more years when he didn't have to do it. He hasn't requested a trade, publicly at least. So why would he extend his contract if he wanted to leave. My off-the-wall theory is that Papley wouldn't mind going to a Melbourne club if a deal could be made. He probably asked his manager to tell clubs he might be available for the right price, which has elicited the interest and rumours. Of course clubs are interested. Papley extending his contract to 4 years increases his trade value. The main suitors, Carlton and North have picks 8 and 7, respectively. From the acquiring club perspective, this probably seems more than fair value. But I don't think this will be enough to do the deal. It's just that Papley has been in great form, hitting his peak, is in the perfect age demographic for the Swans and is a big game player. And now he's got the 4 year contract to boot. There probably is a price where the Swans would let Paps go, but I don't think there's a club that will pay it.

I also get the feeling from the exit interviews that the 1 year contracts for Menzel and Thurlow may have come with player options to extend a year. They both sound like they're staying. The assessment of Thurlow was quite negative. He's not without talent. I just don't know why it hasn't come together for him, or if he can raise the level of his game with a good pre-season. It's like the parts are good, but the package somehow doesn't quite work right.

The hamstring injury to Tucker was confirmed. It sounds like he's getting another year. Reynolds had a back injury and already signed on for next year.

The list of possible delistments is getting shorter. Too short.

Brad Hill is more a priority to Saints than Jones, he is also under contract and Saints are throwing 900k at him. We have no chance at Pick 5 from Saints

Isn’t Jones out of contract, which reduces our leverage? There’s talk of one or more of the picks they might get for Bruce, Steven etc heading our way, but a player might be better if there’s one both sides can agree on.

I hope he stays. Paps stays and we also get Daniher.

So they arent in a position to throw heaps at Jones that we cant match

Papley has to be our priority. Players of his quality and type don't come along too often. He kicked 38 goals as a small forward and he hasn't peaked. If he follows his form improvement and we get a decent season from Buddy he should kick 50 goals in 2020. That is an enormous return for a small forward. That sort of return means we make finals. Jones is no way going to give us anywhere near this output as a midfielder, and for that matter anywhere else on the field. Daniher has played 11 games in 2 years. The retention of Papley at all costs is a no brainer to me.
