I suppose everything that is happening now is talk and rumours. We have just had 5 senior players retire (presumably on top $... I included Tippett in this as we have just stopped paying him). We are rumoured to only be after 1 top line player. Not that means much, we do keep things close to our chest. Just makes me wonder what is happening behind closed doors.Comment

I don't think points next year will be that much of an issue.
I think the only problem would be if we were top four and both Gulden/Campbell looked like first round picks. Because top four sides can only match one first round bid.
If GWS had a pick before us, they could bid on Gulden, we would match and then not be allowed to match a first round bid for Campbell.
But that is a year away. And there is no guarantee that both will end up rated as first round picks.
This is just a rough recollection of the rule change applicable to 1st round academy picks, and might also apply to other priority selections:
-- The club must have a 1st round pick in order to make a second academy 1st round selection. This was done to prevent clubs from trading down, like we have, to secure more points when the club knows it will have top selections. But if the club has a 1st round pick, the AFL is not going to force the club to acquire more 1st round picks just to get multiple academy selections.
For example, If Gulden and Campbell where in this year's draft, we could still use pick 4 on a Jacob Serong if no bids came for the academy players. If bids come for both Gulden and Campbell later in the 1st round, we could use whatever picks we had left, regardless of round, and the points matching rules continue on as usual.
It also seems that the review of the bidding system will not apply to 2020, but rather to 2021 or later.Comment

Here is an article from 2017 with something about it. I interpreted the article as meaning a top 4 club could only match one bid in the top 20.
Though I am not sure if what was talked about in the article was actually implemented into the rules.
Giants lose access to top talent in academy overhaul - AFL.com.au
"The ladder position of a club will now have a direct influence on how many academy players it can draft inside the top-20.
For a team that finishes in the top four, the club will only be able to select one academy player. For a team finish in from fifth to eighth, there will be a limit of two players inside the opening 20 picks, while there will be no limit placed on sides outside the top eight.
There had previously been no limit on the number of academy players a club can select in any given draft."Comment

Sorry about that, I tried to link to some article about Daniher in the Herald Sun. I should have known better.
Meanwhile, this seems kind of new: "[o]ut-of-contract midfielder Zak Jones has told his Sydney teammates he's off to the Saints". Trade Wrap: Crow set to become a Lion on long-term deal - AFL.com.au
Not new in him going to Saints, but that he has told teammates he is.Comment

News Corp has suggested Greater Western Sydney spearhead Jeremy Cameron could be wrenched out of the Giants at the end of next year after being "embarrassed" by the club's Grand Final showing on Sunday. This is despite Cameron insisting he and his teammates are "very tight", they "help each other a lot away from football" and are "better people because of that".
