We have a clear replacement in will Haywood to fill the small forward role, so if Carlton are desperate to overspend to get him in, let's use his currency to target a key need, as in mids, ruck or key backman.
For the record, not danihur.

AFL Trade Radio puts forwards this scenario
This is how it looked.
ESSENDON
Receives: Picks 4 and 8, Loses: Joe Daniher and Pick 29
SYDNEY
Receives: Joe Daniher and Pick 29, Loses: Tom Papley and Pick 4
CARLTON
Receives: Tom Papley, Loses: Pick 8
I say “ tell em they’re dreaming “ picks 4 & 8 for Daniher is way over the odds."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

On SEN they keep saying Tom is a restricted free agent next year regardless of what callers say. He has a 4 year contract for crying out loud. Just pay him another $100,000 a year and put this bull dust to bed, or maybe that's what he angling for, or should I say his manager is angling for (read commission). It's all about the cabbage.
Even if Papley were out of contract at the end of next season, he hasn't been in the AFL system long enough to qualify as a free agent.
Re the idea of picks 4 and 8 for Daniher, that's not far off what Chris Judd was traded for. If he had played for the last two seasons at the level he performed in 2017, fair enough. He'd be worth that and more (given tall forwards cost more). But not for a player with lingering injury concerns.
If the club decides to trade Papley and pick 8 forms the core of what we receive, the club should be looking to see which quality midfielders they can prise out of other clubs, not waste it on a tall forward that we don't need. If West Coast are serious about getting their hands on Tim Kelly they will need some serious trade currency. Their current and next year first round picks aren't going to cut it with Geelong. They'll certainly need a pick in the top 10. They may also need to clear some players for salary cap reasons. Who might they be prepared to part ways with? (Probably no-one that fits a need, though Daniel Venables wouldn't be a bad replacement for Zak Jones if he's over his concussion issues - not for an effective straight swap for Papley though. Sheed would be great but that's a pipedream - West Coast would never let him go and he almost certainly wouldn't want to leave either.)Comment

What's your point Barry? Just because the club didn't consult you on appointing the CEO..

On the Papley trade via today's Trade Wrap:
"SYDNEY will play hard-ball in any trade negotiations involving contracted forward Tom Papley, who has indicated his desire to move to Carlton during the upcoming Telstra AFL Trade Period.
The lively small forward is under contract with the Swans until the end of 2023, with the Blues aware they will have to pay over the odds in order to prise him back to Victoria next month.
Papley, who is understood to have attracted an offer of around $550,000-650,000 per season from Carlton, chose Ikon Park as his preferred destination despite rival interest from North Melbourne.
He has close friends at the club, including former Swans defenders Nic Newman and Alex Johnson – the latter of which is currently involved with the club's VFL affiliate the Northern Blues.
Carlton has picks No.9, No.41, No.46 and No.73 at the upcoming NAB AFL Draft, while it will also be able to trade its future first-round selection during a significant exchange period for the club.
Gold Coast midfielder Jack Martin has already officially requested a trade to Carlton ahead of the trade period.
Papley, 23, enjoyed a career-best season in 2019, kicking 37 goals from 22 games. – Riley Beveridge""Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Guys, every pick has moved out at least one, Carlton now holds pick 9 which after the GWS Green matching bid will become pick 10.
No more reference to pick 8 :-)
We have pick 5 which may end up pick 6, Rowell, Anderson and highly likely Green before our pick, we'll have the third "live" pick, will my pick Serong last to then?Comment

Carlton giving up just pick 9 for a contracted player? Sydney giving up TWO first round picks for a player who's played only 11 games in two years, has questions over his commitment and who the Swans can get for free next year? Someone's gone way off reality there.
