Sam Walsh is contracted till end of 2022. Papley till end of 2023. Papley for Walsh and their 2nd round sounds fair to me! In all seriousness, I just hope the club holds Papley to his contract. I'm confident they can sort out any issues with his girlfriend and financial requirements in the coming years. In the meantime we can fix up Sam Walsh with a Sydney girl and lure him over!

Agreed! This is not as unreasonable as it sounds. We'll trade some of our required future for a piece of yours.

I don't feel disappointed in Papley. He's well within his rights to raise the question. And if a mutually suitable arrangement can be come up with, all well and good. And, if one can't be come up with, then too bad and I expect no problems. If however Papley had a hissy fit or a case of sour grapes, THEN I would be disappointed. But there is nothing to suggest to me that he would do this. And we can don't have to enter into any arrangement that doesn't appeal to us. Carlton (or whoever) has to make it worth our while. And if they can't, that's the end of that.

Or am I missing something or being naive?

Trade period about to kick in in earnest. RFA offers from Friday. Trade 'week' proper starts Monday until Wednesday fortnight 10 days later. Clubs can keep trading picks nearly all the way to the draft.

I don't think you have missed anything or naive. Papley has now nominated a club and it is up to them to facilitate a suitable trade. If that can't be arranged it seems that Papley is happy to play out his contract. One thing he sees North as not likely to have any success in the near future by turning down their big offer.

I am getting a feeling that Papley may have been pressured into this through this media speculation and he feels that he has to nominate a club and see where it leads.

The home of brown paper bags. They have been stealing players and cheating the system for decades.

Carlton have seen this as opportunity to throw big $$$$ in attempt to lure him out......which seems to be having an affect. My hatred for them is resurfacing like how they did similar poaching Rhys-Jones and Berine Evans away from us. Gutted if we lose him, even if we get 2 x 1st rounders because I see him as a heart & soul of the club with his playing passion/talent and Swans lineage. I also fear if we let him go, Melb clubs will think any player on our list is gettable no matter length of contract.
Throw in Greg Williams. He left when Col Kinnear was sacked as coach and went back to Carlton. He got a very expensive home in Kew that was never declared. They're dogs of the first order.

AFL Trade Radio puts forwards this scenario
                    This is how it looked.
                    ESSENDON
Receives: Picks 4 and 8, Loses: Joe Daniher and Pick 29
                    SYDNEY
Receives: Joe Daniher and Pick 29, Loses: Tom Papley and Pick 4
                    CARLTON
Receives: Tom Papley, Loses: Pick 8

I say “ tell em they’re dreaming “ picks 4 & 8 for Daniher is way over the odds.

Cameron - Totally acceptable, given very little opportunity with us . Trade him to his preferred club.

Jones - Out of contract. Trade him to his preferred club so long as they come to the party with a reasonable trade...We have some leverage but shouldn't over play it.

Papley - Contacted for 4 years. Either no trade, or trade to the highest bidder in Victoria. If it's moving to Melbourne he wants, we can try and facilitate that...but...

there is no way he gets to choose which club....Highest bidder or nothing.
I repeat; Carlton = Brown paper bags and houses. Maybe the house appeals to the Darls.

Was just about to post something similar . This is Mathew Lloyd’s proposed trade . Classic Lordo, needs to take the Essendon googles off here .

On SEN they keep saying Tom is a restricted free agent next year regardless of what callers say. He has a 4 year contract for crying out loud. Just pay him another $100,000 a year and put this bull dust to bed, or maybe that's what he angling for, or should I say his manager is angling for (read commission). It's all about the cabbage.

If Joe was fit and 2 years younger...maybe.

I still suspect it's more related to the Bunyip fires earlier in the year and related issues.
