Mark Robinson on AFL360 was suggesting similar tonight when Papley's Carlton trade request was raised. Robbo questioned players like Papely who sign 5 year contracts & then want to walk out a year later. He added this needs to change as clubs should have power to ship them out to whom whoever they desire in these cases. Players can't have it both ways. Whately appeared to concur (most likely due to Tim Kelly case being a Cats supporter).Comment

Tom Morris OTC reporting the Swans are not happy with Papley requesting to be traded & they will hold him to his contract unless they receive suitable offer. Tom suggested Swans might be open to trade Papley should Daniher want to come to us. However like many here, Healy, Brown & Roos questioned recruiting Daniher (in expense of Papley) with his injury history. Roos said we could end up with two players on our list with OP history who will take up $2m of our cap space.Comment

2019 Review: Oliver Florent - sydneyswans.com.au
Kirky hoping that Ollie can continue as an inside mid 2020
Said the last 4 games of the season got some good inside mid game time which they were happy with after primarily playing wing most of the season prior to those last 4 games
If Ollie can sustain this positional change I wonder who will get more time on the wings ?
Blakey ?
Cunningham ?

We are in free fall and if we get a lopsided deal for papley, we risk become a feeder club like gold coast.
This is serious.Comment

That is overly alarmist talk, Barry. We have a promising team with most talent locked in and an early draft pick to further improve it. If we do trade Papley we will get a decent pick for him. Its nothing like the Gold Coast.

I'd love to know just what Tom Harley did to you to mean your obsessed with throwing the boot in at every opportunity? Sit in your favourite seat one night at ANZ? Reject taking up the Chairman Role of Stadium Australia?"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I quoted this earlier from the Trade Wrap, emphasis mine:
"SYDNEY will play hard-ball in any trade negotiations involving contracted forward Tom Papley, who has indicated his desire to move to Carlton during the upcoming Telstra AFL Trade Period.
The lively small forward is under contract with the Swans until the end of 2023, with the Blues aware they will have to pay over the odds in order to prise him back to Victoria next month."
Papley has a four-year contract. That's the key here. Carlton must cough up some really good inducements to convince the Swans to break the contract. It's quite possible that Carlton offers two first-round draft picks (Pick 10 and Carlton's 2020 first-round pick which is likely to be around pick 10 as well) and that still won't be enough. What eventually gets offered depends on what Carlton can secure from other clubs. They may need to offload a player just to get draft picks (the Suns have a player who also wants to go to Carlton).
You may be more pessimistic, but who knows, maybe you're closer to the mark and everyone else is too optimistic."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

I'm keen to find out what Barry expects the Swans to get for Papley, Jones and Cameron."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

At this stage I would be happy to keep Papley at the club for one extra year to adjust to losing him. Then trade him to a Victorian side at the end of next season.
I don't think a draft pick will compensate for how disruptive it will be to lose him. Especially since we want to bounce back next season. It will give us time to figure out how to replace him.Comment

We should hold Paps to his contract. Just can't see Carlton offering us anything that will make it worth it to trade a contracted, essential player. Certainly agree with most that the decision on Paps should not be tied to what happens with Daniher. Different players, Daniher has a strong whiff of Tippett to him.
In the meantime, we should look long and hard at Lewis Taylor. Being a Brisbanite, I watch all the Lions games and he's an excellent player, squeezed out by the Lions having a host of gun small forwards. He beat Bont for the rising star so obviously has talent. Lewie would potentially have a field day circling around Buddy, Reid and McCartain. For most his career, his talls were Hipwood, McStay and Big O so I'd say there's plenty of upside for him joining us.Comment

The hawks employed a very specific strategy and they are already on the rise again coming 9th last season and 6 spots ahead of us.....after seeing our reactions on this forum when thinking outside the square I could only imagine the below strategy would be shot down in flames by so many of our supporters ???
AFL website
“The Hawks are expected to give up a third-round pick for Patton. Their only current third round selection is Pick 47, obtained from Port Adelaide and a pick earlier than their natural selection which the Western Bulldogs own.
Patton has undergone three knee reconstructions but Hawthorn is confident its medical staff can work wonders on the former number one pick, just as it did with Scully this year.
Scully was obtained for a future fourth round pick - Pick 57, originally Gold Coast’s selection and currently St Kilda’s - with GWS having major fears about the winger’s ankle. Scully played 21 games this season, the equal-second most in a season for his career.“"be tough, only when it gets tough"

The main reason the Papley trade request annoys me is because of his current contract length. It's hard to imagine he would change his mind so soon after a contract extension and I suspect his main reason for a trade is more $$$. That being said I think we can cover the loss of Papley and it is our chance to cash in on him (if we have other targets in mind). Interesting to see what happensComment

Oh sorry, Tom, but we did try. And really, that's how highly we think of you.
Everybody's happy. Except for Carlton. I can live with that.Comment
