I was about to write exactly the same thing. Barrett should make a public apology. He says this of Harley in this video: "He was the one who started it. He got him to his house. He got him to the line. He got him to go public with his decision and they couldn't get the deal done... I'm personally keen to hear what Tom Harley has to say, given the circus he created and wasn't able to deliver on."

Looks like Harley has had a quiet word or two with friend Barrett.

You may be right. This may have been generated by a quiet word from Tom Harley. Or Barrett may have finally checked his facts by calling Harley and asking him what happened. Like he should have done before he slandered him publically.

Sam McClure ran the story and claimed there could be no innocent explanation for the Harley-Daniher meeting. If he didn't ask Tom Harley whether there was an innocent explanation before running the story, then that's very poor. If he spoke to Harley who told him he met with several players from other teams and still ran the story, that's unforgiveable. McClure's the one who created the "circus" adn made 2020 a difficult year for Daniher.

And with draft radio this is only the beginning

Any big name player looking at a trade will get so much airplay and so much baiting by the media so that clubs, managers, players etc are drawn into the pit

It’s a mess and a few media reporters went way over the top 2019

BARRETT: The inside story of the Daniher debacle - AFL.com.au

Daniher was in Sydney to receive treatment from a medical specialist highly regarded in the NRL industry. Swans champion Buddy Franklin had also been treated by this specialist. The catch-up with Harley, with whom he had developed a special rapport in 2011 when part of the Australian Institute of Sport squad - which also included Stephen Coniglio, Adam Treloar, Luke Parker and Jeremy Cameron – was a casual one.

Harley genuinely felt the meeting was nothing more than a coffee with a person who saw him as a mentor. As he has observed privately in the months since, Harley regularly catches up with big name players from rival clubs, particularly some from the team at which he captained to two premierships, Geelong, as well as footballers from Greater Western Sydney, some of whom live near him in Balmain... Harley actually didn’t realise at the time of the July catch-up that he [Daniher] was desperate to leave Tullamarine, and the Swans, as well as Daniher's own management, had felt that any exit plans could wait until free agency applied at the end of 2020.
Read the article. He has now mostly exonerated the Swans. However, can you imagine the pressure that Daniher will be feeling after he either reads it or gets wind of it. Toxic and obsessive Melbourne footy media are a real worry. The guy is 25 years old and now has to come back to this. I actually fear for his mental state. No wonder he wanted out. Barrett etc need to look in the mirror and show some decency for once. Too late on this one. Daniher could easily end up giving it away.

I agree with all this. Barratt et al should back off and respect Daniher’s privacy.

Glenn Maxwell’s withdrawal from cricket for the time being to focus on his mental health , as announced today, is a strong reminder that top sportspeople are human beings not immune to the pressure heaped upon them.

Tom Boyd is another recent example.

                Quick side note:
As at 2018 world vision report Australia

The teenagers 15-19 yrs of age experiencing high to extreme stress is now:

                females 56%
                males 25%

In sport we will see more and more of the patterns that have started to emerge re mental health in particular anxiety and depression

So now the truth comes out, we didn't chase Daniher, he chased us and we made some attempt to do the trade on terms that recognised his injury history and his fractured relationship with Essendon. It just didn't make sense to any of us that we would try for Daniher this trade period, it was so wrong on so many fronts but we tried even though it didn't suit.

Barrett's expose of the post trade phone call between Dodo and Daniher was enlightening. Doubt Daniher will "fall back in love with Essendon", sounds like he was desperate to get out. How this year pans out will be interesting but looks like Round II vs the Dodo will being on again next October.

Auntie.Gerald, thanks for the heads-up re the world vision report; I'd be grateful if you could give more bibliographical details.

Apologies it was actually the Mission Australia Report (I was recalling from reading it a year or so Ago)........as per below and it’s relevance is for AFL and the swans ...... but should be in another thread .....apologies

Ie the generation coming through will need much more mental health support and access to greater mental health education.

                        ———

According to the largest Australian youth survey of 15-19 year olds, 56% of females and 26% of males have described stress as a high to extreme concern. (Mission Australia, 2018 National Youth Survey).

They both look like good acquisitions. Wonder where that leaves HB?
