My reservations are less about his confidence, and more about whether he truly realises the work required to play at senior level. I'd have less concern for a player expressing those views if they already exhibit a high level of endurance. But for a player who presented himself in poor shape at the combine and who had a significant size advantage at junior level (and possibly even at SANFL level, albeit he was playing against men), he's going to have to make some adjustments to step up to the next level. His size advantage will be largely nullified, and he'll have to develop other weapons. Especially an adequate level of endurance. That doesn't mean he can't, or won't do, that. But it will likely take him a bit more time than the view he is expressing.

My recollection is that the comments to Hayward were made part way through his underage season. He then went out and engaged a personal trainer and upped his work-rate for several months. By the time the combine came around, he was already able to demonstrate significant improvement.

I also recall watching a few early pre-season training sessions after he arrived at the club, and he was on a dedicated running programme, rather than participating with the skill drills. So clearly they wanted to ramp up his running even further before he was allowed to join in with the main training sessions.

I agree. He would've known all year that the combine was coming up yet turned up out of shape. Strikes me as someone who has got this far due to natural size / ability and needs to get a rude awakening. Whether he embraces it is another question that can be answered elsewhere.

There have been positive developments on the Gould front:

          No Cookies | The Advertiser

Says he responded to the Swans telling him he wouldn't be drafted because he was too fat by shedding 6kg and slashing his skinfold levels in two weeks.

He does say the combine came soon after he won the SANFL grand final and “There were a few late nights.”

But he'll be working hard on his fitness and weight between the combine and the draft.

He sounds like a great prospect to me. Used to be state level sprinter. Rampe like. Will Gould - Aussie Rules Draft Central

"He has a thumping right foot kick which commonly travels 50 metres with relative ease and suitable penetration. A physically imposing defender, Gould’s ability to read the flight of the ball, intercept then generate rebound from defence, matched with a potency in the air ensures he can match-up on small, medium or tall opponents."

This line encourages me. "Whilst some have raised question marks over his endurance, Gould possesses a huge appetite for hard work"

I don't want to disturb the trading, drafting and list management thread - but I was wondering what happened to the 2019 season review thread? Did I miss it?

Fair point Liz and I agree that to turn up at the combine in less than best shape is a red flag.....for his sake, hopefully he is prepared to back up his confident words with appropriate action.

I think we all just wanted to look ahead rather than back.....after that season.

Like players that actually know how to play and find the footy. No point being a running genius if you cant dispose of the ball to a target or get your hands on it. I see that a lot in junior players.

Incredible that at 191cm the article says hes not considered key position backman but I think this is misguided as you dont need to match key forwards with equal height. Swans have shown this wiht rampe , barry , bolton etc over the years.

I’d imagine it’s because not everyone on RWO supports 2 teams. Some people actually dislike the “cross-town rivals” (for any number of reasons). & some people probably don’t want them to have any success whatsoever.

The haters are as entitled to hate them as much as the admirers are to admire them.

                      I, for one, don’t like GW$.

                        +1

I'll never support that team. I'd sooner walk away from watching footy altogether.

This topic should potentially have its own thread "GW$ love them or hate them", but I don't understand why some on here hate them. Hate is a very strong word, and there are very strong negative feelings displayed toward the other Sydney club on here. I just don't understand the reasons?

I don't hate them, dislike them yes and desperately want Melbourne to bid on Green at pick 3, wouldn't that be a show to see what GW$ do then :-)

                              Exactly

If people want to discuss the recent GWS trading, it belongs fine in this thread, particularly as it is tied up with our own drafting opportunities. But if anyone wants to broaden the conversation, please do it in a new thread (or find an old one that already covers this topic - there's probably one lurking around, waiting to be reinvigorated).

After delving a little deeper into some of the highlights packages floating around , tYoung is 100% the man I want us to pick at 5 (assuming he hasn’t been snapped up ). I’m very strong that our midfield is severely lacking, but this guys talent and skill is too good to ignore. The kicking , and not just ‘that’ kick, virtually every kick in his highlights package is pure class , with at least 3 or 4 more almost on par with the one everyone’s talking about. Supreme vision , skill and execution. But he isn’t just a kicker , his reading of the play, intercept and even contest marking looks fantastic as well. He also took out the agility test at the combine. I’m praying this guy is still available at our pick 5, with 3 deadly left foot kicks in our side ( Blakey and Dawson the other too , oh and bud but he’s no spring. Chicken ) our future looks bright for ball users. One in each third of the ground . Yes please .
