Keeping Bell as a Cat B rookie does restrict his short term opportunities as it means he is ineligible to play senior football until someone is placed on the LTIL. Given he broke through for his senior debut late in 2019, you’d reckon he would be hoping to have himself in contention for more senior games early in the new season.
That's very optimistic Liz. I'd say the odds of winning a premiership are better than not having someone on the LTIL. I can see Sam Naismith queuing up already.

Of course, it could also be seen as Carlton drafting like a boss ... Make Freo match a bid, then make GWS match, then say "Just kidding" and trade out the pick for 2 first-rounders because Gold Coast really wanted Flanders.

List clarification, a team is allocated picks according to how many vacancies they have on their main list. We were allocated 6 picks meaning prior to the draft we had 34 on the main list.

Aliir, Blakey, Clarke, Cunningham, Dawson, Florent, Foot, Fox, Franklin, Hayward, Heeney, Hewitt, Kennedy, Ling, Lloyd, McCartin, McInerney, Melican, Mills, Naismith, O'Riordan, Papley, Parker, Rampe, Reid, Ronke, Rowbottom, Sinclair, Stoddart, Thurlow, Taylor, Gray, Brand makes 33 so have to assume Bell was upgraded to the main list to make 34, plus 4 ND draftees = 38

So we can have 6 Cat A rookies, Armartey, Reynolds, McLean, Knoll, plus 2 RD this morning.

Cat B rookies, Wicks, O'Connor, room for one more?

Some interesting notes from the Combine testing this year:
              • Chad Warner finished 4th in the YoYo test and 6th in the Agility test.
              • Dylan Stephens finished 3rd in the 2km time trial and 10th in both the Agility test and he 20 m sprint.
              • Brady Rowles finished 2nd in the vertical leap and 1st in the running vertical jump by a considerable margin.
              • Elijah Taylor finished 2nd in the Agility test.
              • Will Gould finished 1st in the skin folds test.

That's a very good point and probably settles the issue that we have 38 on our primary list. But it's still unclear as to who was upgraded, although Bell seems the most likely.

That is an astute observation by 707. But further to that, we were only allocated two picks in the rookie list, indicating our Cat A list is full. So if it is someone other than Bell who was promoted to the senior list, Bell must have been promoted to the Cat A list. Which means it wasn’t that there was no room for an local players. They’ve just deemed none worthy of a spot.

Yes, that's the way I see it. Clearly put. Well done.

Chris Doerre has rated our draft performance 4th best (after Gold Coast, Fremantle, Collingwood): AFL Draft Every club's draft haul rated.

Sydney strayed away from the script by selecting Dylan Stephens at 5 but found a suitable list fit in the hard-running midfielder who is accustomed to playing against bigger bodies and should earn senior games in season 2020. The Swans patiently traded their picks up to improve their draft hand and in the second round moved up slightly to secure Will Gould and Chad Warner. While Elijah Taylor was their other second round selection. Gould is one of the draft bargains as one of this year's most ready to play, best and most penetrating kicks and most imposing physical presence with the way he bumps and tackles to hurt. Warner will help Sydney's midfield as an aggressive ball winning midfielder who wins a high proportion of ball in contested situations. Taylor as a forward is one of this year's most talented forwards with how quick and clean he is and how it feels like he will make something happen every time he gets his hands on the ball.

Once he builds a tank, I can see Gould becoming that big bodied midfielder everyone was calling for. He could be like a Dangerfield, but bigger and a better kick. When I first commented some weeks back that I thought Gould was worth considering for our first pick, I had this in mind. Why not turn him into an inside midfielder? Not saying it will happen, but the possibility is there.

Gould's a good reader of the play so probably takes over Mills backline spot so Mills can .............. wait for it ............. go into the midfield!!

I'm not convinced. What makes you think we can turn him into an inside mid? The preeminent requirement to play midfield is a tank which is currently Gould's weakness. Also, his attributes are well suited to rebounding from defence. This is where he has excelled for the past two years at least. I'm not sure how he goes as a one on one defender, and this is something he may need to work on, but I think we are far better off developing him in defence. On the flipside, he lacks both the height and possibly the closing speed to excel as a KPD. But Reg was slower and both Rampe and Leo Barry were smaller and they found a way so I am optimistic he will be a brilliant defender. Everyone is comparing him to Shannon Hurn. I haven't seen enough of Hurn to know. But it's a nice comparison!

Plus, why do we want to turn him into an inside mid? Defenders are important too. In fact, especially at the Swans, defenders RULE! And we have inside mids and more in the pipeline. No need. If anyone is going to move from defence to the midfield let it be Mills!
