I thought the ground played well.

Well I'll get the rant out of the way first. That umpiring tonight was utterly horrendous - up there with the Fairypuppies miracle of 2016. Just like that game, a few key calls at the few moments when we might have found a way back into the game were critical - in particular the McVeigh call in the 3rd quarter. 2 quick Adelaide goals turned what should have been a couple of points margin into 20 points. Some utterly bamboozingly bad holding the ball calls, and so many obvious blatant free kicks missed. The officiating of our game is getting worse, year in year out.
Onto more important things - we look a long way behind the eight ball, and on what we've seen so far, clearly a bottom 6 team for mine. Skill errors galore, inability to hit targets, inability to kick easy goals. We had moments tonight where we looked alright, but large periods where we look slow, immobile, clunky and just always a step behind. And I don't really think Adelaide, like the Dogs last week, were particularly good. We just look, very very ordinary. Lots of guys don't look sharp at all, and I wonder just what we did all summer. At least Buddy showed some of his magic at times tonight - he looks to be on the improve, and a couple of moments of pure genius from him were good highs on a night not filled with many at all."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I don’t understand the questioning of our side . I have never said this but tonight we were absolutely @@@@@@ by poor umpiring at crucial moments . Decisions paid to the crows in front of goal , non decisions to us in front of goal ( Reid last qtr anybody - absolute momentum killer !!!) we played well enough to win up until the Reid non free kick . That would’ve put us in front or close . After that , it’s like we lost heart . I don’t blame them. I never whinge about the umps , I put it out there on my footy tipping group chat that it was poor umpiring , it was unanimous that we got a hiding from the umps . From cats, dogs, hawks, kangas supporters etc . So filthy about it. Did it cost us the game , I will never know, did it cost us an honest and fair chance of winning , @@@@ yes it did

I can't post images but this link speaks volumes on how the umpires treat us:

I'm over 50 and I can confirm that we've been screwed by the umpires my entire life including in the 70s at Lakeside Oval when we were at the bottom of the ladder.
Even in the 90s when the other clubs were complaining about the umpiring bias TOWARDS us, we were still far of the top of the frees for/against. I can only imagine how successful we would have been had we been the on the beneficial end like West Coast, Adelaide and some of the Victorian clubs.Comment

While I'm still fuming about the umpiring, I'm also disappointed about some of our tackling efforts tonight. Too much just jogging near the opposition. In fact, I think Roamin' Brian is making the Crows players more uncomfortable, than some of the pressure that we applied.Comment

The game has moved on from the grinding, attrition based game that served us well for such a long time. The game is now about speed, trying to beat the flood, given how fit the modern footballer is. This is showing up our lack of speed, skill and precision. Given what our younger players in particular have shown (or not), I'm not confident about this season.Comment

I really worry that our younger guys are hitting either a very early peak, or are not developing as they should. Too many look worse then last season by some distance."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I really hate focus on the umpiring but it was appalling tonight and hard to explain so many missed HTB against the Crows, few for us. There was one passage in the 4th Q where there was a blatant Adelaide player HTB zilch. Ball goes to Papley, tackled, HTB.
The commentators picked out around half a dozen umpiring clangers.
But I still think the game is passing us by personnel and game plan wise.Comment

I honestly think with fair umpiring it would’ve been a goal either way . We played bloody well in patches and got monumentally @@@@@@ by umpires when we had momentum . So filthy

1. Umpiring
2. Daylight
3. Tackling
4. Ryan Clarke
On the positive, our contested ball was much better after the first quarter. Buddy is back. Aliir is a star. Melican had an improved performance.Comment
