    Swans chat Changes round III

Some of our guys did seem better than last week. At times it did seem like we were playing against the crows and the umpires. If the afl stats are credible we had four players who did not lay a tackle, the crows just one. Florent and clarke were two of them.

    Out: clarke & florent
    In: thurlow & fox

Florent is a key to our future like Melican. Needs to be played. He will come good.

I, like most, see his potential but this is his third season in the seniors.....what time frame to 'come good' do you think is reasonable? The 'kids' can't be kids forever.....

At this stage out Clarke in Thurlow. Will wait to see injuries and reserves play today for other changes.

We need to find a couple of players capable of 30 possessions in the Mids as well as Kennedy and Parker. Maybe we stop playing Hewitt as a tagger and let him attack the ball instead. Papley had a crack but his disposal needs work. I love Sinkers effort level but we need a decent ruckman.

Horse said Heeney’s ankle meant he played more FWD and Mills was forced to play in defence as a tall defender in the absence of Reg. But then Rampe was playing small on Betts.

Assuming Clarke gets dropped Would Thurlow free Mills up. Or is KJ going to replace him?

True but he is a 20/21 year old and it is Round 2. Patience required with players 23 and under. Adam Goodes had some shockers in his first 4 years till he erupted in 2003. Leo Barry was the same - the list goes on.

I'm surprised we haven't brought Thurlow into the senior side yet. As I said in the game thread, the defensive group of Aliir, Melican, Thurlow and COR is the one we should look to developing as our core group for the next decade, but they haven't played a single senior game together, so it will take time an patience.

This will allow more freedom for Rampe and Mills and Jones to play permanently in the midfield, something we also need to do.

I think it's our best option for now. If it doesn't work out, we can try other things. But that will mean looking to even younger and less experienced players, so we shouldn't expect much if we in fact do need to try other combinations this year.

For round 3, I would bring in Thurlow and Dawson for Clarke and Blakey. Ronke was in that group of 3rd year players including Florent and Hayward who haven't yet shown much this year, so wouldn't single him out for dropping. We're in trouble if they don't pick up their games and continue to develop.

Agree re Thurlow. In the preseason it looked like he was brought in to free Mills to the midfield which he was doing for most of the training sessions as well for JLT1. Mills went back to defence for JLT2 but I assumed that was just to cover Lloyd who was missing for that game

Why have the coaches suddenly got cold feet and abandoned the Mills midfield idea? It’s not as if Thurlow has been poor during preseason either.

Also agree that Thurlow needs to come into the side (unless there is an injury we don't know about). Mills to midfield. Clarke is relieved of duties. A change of umps would be good for round 3 too.

But I can't agree with Curley on Mills for reasons stated several times by several posters - including immediately above this post.

Rampe, clearly our best defender, a permanent midfielder?? You can't be serious.
