That was then. This is now.

Even if there is no chance that Longmire is leaving at the end of the year, the club wouldn’t be happy. That sort of interview has the potential to disrupt potential trades, sponsors and confidence of current players.

Disagree. Wouldn't cause much of a ripple in Sydney re sponsors. Situation will be resolved before trade period.and team playing passionately despite ongoing speculation in Melbourne nuffy media.

TBH i wasn't alarmed when I saw Horse's ENTIRE interview live on afl360, as I would've been surprised if he had changed his evasive stance on the matter as I'm of the opinion he's deliberately posturing & also club policy not to discuss publicly. Horse also enthusiastically stated how blessed the club is with great emerging young talent via Beatson's skilful recruiting. That response in itself gave me heart Horse will be signing a contract extension with us in the near future. I just hope it doesn't further delay pending player contracts, which is why I was also happy Dawson committed for another 2 years last week. I like to think it points to Horse staying.

Another journo, Mitch Cleary said today on SEN that a contract till end of 2023 had been drawn up and would be signed this month. Why is this not being discussed? Silly question I know.

For all we know, the club may have had enough of Longmire and plan to sack him this year.

The real story is that Tom Harley asked Liam Pickering to induce North Melbourne to sack Brad Scott and he, i.e Pickering, would be able to deliver the Horse that lays the golden egg. Then the Swans wouldn't have to officially sack him and pay out the last year of his contract or give him an overblown contract extension. They can then hire Rhyce Shaw at a third of the price and have lots left over in the soft cap for hiring outside overseas consultants.

Rhyce has got to keep winning now to prove that he's the best Longmire replacement, since I'll bet that Kirky thinks he's next in line.

I'm happy with Longmire as coach, but I wouldn't mind seeing Shaw take over either. He was great as our NEAFL coach and all the players love him.

John's contract situation was discussed on The Age podcast too. Niall suggested Longmire had been offered 5 years at North and a 2 year extension at Sydney (taking him to the end of 2022) on less money. He went on to suggest (hypothetically, rather than as reportage) that the Swans might headhunt Rhyce Shaw in the event North successfully poached Longmire.

Left me pondering why Sydney would offer a shorter contract, particularly given the way he's regenerating the team. Why hedge?

I still suspect they may have McVeigh in mind and wonder whether they might not want to cruel their chances of elevating him. I also thought about the tension between Harley and Longmire Caroline Wilson has alluded to in the past. I don't really believe either are correct though.

              Any other theories?

I am actually not fussed either way, he has been great for the swans and we have been great for him but he has been with us for the last 18 years so I would not be holding him wanting a change of scenery against him. He will always be one of our 5 premiership coaches and would be welcomed back in a heartbeat. I actually think a change would be good for all parties, he has set the club up with the young blokes much the same as Roosey did, what did Roosey say, coaches had an 8 year shelf life....the proviso is a straight swap to get Rhys Shaw back to us as senior coach.

Horse isn't going anywhere. I reckon Mitch Cleary is on the money.

It was quite painful watching Longmire's akward answers to the invariable questions about his future. I think that he is genuinely torn between going and staying. It could go either way!

Roos also said tonight that North should forget about Longmire & sign up Shaw in the next 2 weeks if they continue winning. He can't understand North's rush to sign up Longmire when they have someone like Shaw ticking all the boxes right under their noses. He's speaking from experience with our eagerness to sign up Wallace when Roos was caretaker after Eade's mid season sacking (2002).

Let’s say Longmire is going. What could he say tonight if that’s the case?

He could hardly come out and say he has signed with North and is off.

So he said exactly all he could say AND exactly what he would say if he is going.

I’m concerned and reckon he is off.

After watching North Melbourne dismantle Collingwood, it would not be the worse thing in the world if horse went to North and Shaw went to the Swans.

Gawd silly season kicked off in earnest last night.

I'll just keep watching the footy and will happily ignore the speculation, rumour, gossip and spin that has overtaken the AFL media in recent times. Yawn.

Agree, sounds to me like he is ready for the change. Good timing all round.

He's been a fabulous coach for us, but 18 years at the 1 club is a long time.
