This Rampe thing has become beyond absurd. Was there nothing more important for the Victorian Media to discuss from the weekend? FFS, Rampe jumped on the bloody post ,was told to get down and did. The shot for goal had NO HOPE. Even Bomber's coach gave it 1% chance (and he laughed at that comment), Myers winked knowing it was a pantomime. He giggled after the kick with his mates. If the Bombers received a kick in our half after the bell and Rampe was climbing the post, should this lead to a free? Maybe, according to some interpretation of the rules. But,clearly, ridiculous. And quite correct for Gill to treat this incident appropriately.....for once.
The game needs characters like Rampe. He takes the game for what it is , entertainment. His hilarious comments to Umps are inoffensive and give some of us delight.
Rather than fined and made to apologise, he should be given a huge acknowledgment for bringing harmless fun to our game that some have taken far too serious.

According to afl.com.au Horse met with Ramps Saturday and Ramps confessed that he didn’t know there was a rule saying he couldn’t climb the post. I haven’t played in 2 decades and I’m pretty sure I knew a rule like that existed (or maybe I just assumed that not shaking a post would include not climbing it as shaking would occur as a result ). But Dane might not have. It’s as good excuse as any. I doubt that when a player is drafted he’s handed a big fat old rule book and told “here, memorise these”.

It may get a touch ridiculous, though.

Just watched the Rampe video. He is very sorry if he offended any girls. In other words not sorry about offending the umpire. Fair enough.

          He cracks me up.

Loved his comment to an umpire a while back "did you have coffee with Gil?"

This. They lack integrity because they obsess about managing their brand and corporate reputation. It's no way to run a company. Focus on having integrity and public opinion looks after itself.

They are very inconsistent and err on the side of leniency too often. Consequently, this leads to a lack of respect from almost everyone. I'm not referring to Rampe incident, but their general approach.

                  - Robbo's article in HS with headline "The Day AFL integrity died" (we all know it died years ago with the Fixturing, Draft, Cola, Trade Ban, Goodsey & 2016 GF).
Robbo must have forgotten the Essendon drugs saga where players were injected with performance enhancing drugs. Now that is the day that AFL integrity die.

Talk about an overreaction. No wonder I stopped reading his articles.

Rampe has been charged with conduct unbecoming to the AFL. Hopefully they don’t rub him out for a match or two as punishment.

Regardless of whether the umpire was entitled to exercise his discretion in that situation, and not award a free kick, the end result was just a free kicked missed (or not). There are dozens of examples of free kicks missed (or dodgy ones given) every single game. How do we go about adjudicating the effect of every possible umpire error that occurs during a game and adjusting the scoreboard results accordingly? Unlike many other arguable errors, this one didn't actually have an effect on the ball going through the big sticks.
So spot on Liz! When all is said and done, it was just one free kick that could've been paid but wasn't. Several posters here have cited a missed throw by an Essendon player that led to their last goal. If a free kick is paid for that throw, we maintain an 11 point lead and maybe even extend it. Dane's lack of awareness of the rule was astonishing but what he did didn't have an impact on the game - the missed throw did!

By the way, kudos to the Essendon players who knew the rule and tried to point out Dane's transgression to the umpires.
A big raspberry to the same players who tried to wangle a free kick from an incident that had no impact on the play and would have given them a win they didn't deserve.

The MCG turnout was barely half the number (26,502) who turned up at the SCG on Friday night.
Totally agree. I though our crowd numbers Friday night were quite good considering.
14,000 at a Hawks game? Terrible!

On the Couch: Jonathan Brown and Gerard Healy both just said that climbing the post was not against the rules as currently written.

Healy even said that the umpires would not award a free kick this week if it happened again.

Very different conversation than was had on AFL360.

That's true! The wording is "intentionally shakes". Nothing about climbing

Kennett blames Mother's Day. And also said:

"As you know, the AFL have never been terribly considerate of the needs of Hawthorn. But that's life."
Hilarious! But it's the president's job to spruik for their club and you'd have to say, he does that well.

'Ridiculous': Kennett takes aim at AFL over Mother's Day crowd

Lomgmire was on AFL 360 tonight & they showed a post match vision of a chat between Rampe and Longmire. It was lip read as Rampe telling Longmire that he climbed the goal post with Longmire responding, your kidding that's a free kick! They asked Longmire if that was what said to which he responded I can't remember whilst smirking a little grin.
