2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

If we do trade with Collingwood this year, there will be a very good chance that it will involve one of our future picks for one of their current ones. They will need points in the 2nd, 3rd rounds next year to pay for Nick Daicos. We need points this year to pay for Campbell & Gulden. Potentially, if we were to trade for Cox it might be something along the lines of:

In: Cox, pick 41
Out: 2021 2nd round

That would rate Cox at around a pick 44 so maybe we would throw in some steak knives depending on how much salary we are taking off their hands.

Cox is only worth a pick in the 40's. He's 30, and plays one good game a year.

However I do like him as a ruck roughy.

Darcy Cameron's ruck time was up there with Grundy's during the finals.

They obviously rate him a better ruckman than Cox.

Grundy wasn't fully fit. They needed Cox to play forward. No so obvious about his ruck abilities. It was more to fill the positional needs that Collingwood had. It's like us playing Aliir in the ruck. He's not the first or second choice, but the best solution for the situation, the argument would go.


We would probably offer Cox a 3 year contract. I think we can afford to pay his 600 k for next year if need be. Otherwise, we could push some of it forward into the latter part of the contract. He's probably worth 450-500 kpa.

Matt Rendell on Trade Radio just floated the idea of the Swans chasing Crouch from Adelaide in return for next season's first rounder. This is based on the St. Kilda deal falling through.

His argument is that Josh Kennedy is near the end and Parker may be past his best so Crouch would be a good addition to our midfield. Thoughts please.

This would be totally insane. To give away anything for a player we don't need is really crazy. Crouch would have a negative effect on the Swans. The only good thing would be that he's injury prone and likely not to play much. Rendell's logic is factually incorrect and shows a lack of knowledge of our list and game plan.

We already have too many midfielders. Every midfielder that we recruit takes away a spot for one of our developing mids. So bringing in someone like Crouch virtually guarantees that we would lose a midfielder of greater value to us for lack of game time. Parker still has at least 5 good years left. Hewett is coming into his peak years. Mills will be moving to the midfield to make room for our plethora of defenders. The only midfielder we will be losing to retirement in the next 5 years is Kennedy, so that's the only natural spot opening in our midfield until 2026. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Don’t know about that but It’s glaring that barely any of his teammates ( other than Cox made a vague post about the media ) have come out in support after that Journo claimed his teammates didn’t want him there. Something’s not right at Collingwood, I suspect Bucks ‘nice guy’ image outside the club may be a little different internally.

Agreed. He lost me at the suggestion Parker is past his best - it's a common short-hand trope of Melbourne media. What did Luke come in the Browlow - eighth? Crouch has been unimpressive in the way he's tried to engineer his way out of Adelaide.

I think our midfield mix is coming together. Unless it's seriously elite young talent in Hollands, we should be spending our draft capital on talls.

No. I didn't say that. He upsets the optimal mix of players we need to execute our game plan. He's a good player. I would even say a very good player. But we have too many young players vying for spots. Someone good will be forced to leave. So there's no net gain in recruiting a midfielder. It's basically the same argument I made for not recruiting Constable.

If there's anything to be learned from the Collingwood and GSW debacles, is that list management is about management, not just getting the best players to the club. When you stuff too many lollies into the jar, it's liable to crack.

I tend to agree. I don't see much point in bringing in rejects from other Clubs. Better to go for youth. When we can get a genuine A grader then go for it.

I’m confused. Crouch won a B&F last year. McCartin was a #1 draft pick. These aren’t “spuds”.

If mason Cox is really on $600k ( the mind boggles ) then no thanks, we’ll take Hickey. Cheaper option and a better ruck. Still not great but solid.

Having read some of the thing posted on here that were written about him last year, he might not be as big a spud as I and others on here had claimed. And he may just be coming into his prime for a big man, he hasn’t played a whole heap of footy over the journey.


Unless we can still manage to pluck a younger option with greater upside from somewhere. Preuss may still be an option too if the GWS trade falls through.

Our trading strategy was made pretty clear from Gardiner the other day. He sees our primary improvement coming from the list of young players we've already accumulated and we get to add to that through the draft again this year. Pick 3 and two academy boys.

Bringing in other more established, albeit mediocre players, are a means to fast track the development of the youth brigade. We can't just have all youngsters out there.

Parker hints at this too in his end of year video recently posted on our website. He sees his role now in helping that next brigade along.

The inference is we are not chasing any established guns yet. A big focus is keeping our list together and ensuring moral and self belief are high. By all reports, it looks as though the players have bought in to that and have become a tight knit group in iso. Paps wants to stay. AA wants to stay. Rowbottom and McInerney's vids speak to the growing bond and healthy culture. The exception of course was ET and I can't see him staying unless he satisfied the leaders of our club.

We are still a couple of years off I'd say in our rebuild. It requires a little more patience. I'd expect for us to go after any established missing pieces of our team then, but definitely no d***heads like Hogan, who would likely disrupt status quo.

I think our list is pretty exciting. It makes for a boring draft period, but that's okay. I think we have the right strategy in place for another crack into finals soon.
