    yes
happiness is a a board experience isnt it ?

I liked our coaching that game

I dont like our recruitment strategy

they can co exist cant they ?

Pretty sure i said i like the list re juniors and backs and forwards

I dont like our lack of experience in the mids and said that didnt I ?

I mean two extra experienced mids that can truly perform would be amazing vs what we have recruited

I would take two of these vs the 6 or so that came our way....wouldnt you ? That was severely exposed vs the Saints......were you happy that game ?.......?

I don’t get your point regarding the Cats. They have pretty much been using a similar strategy to us - they’ve gone to the draft and used late picks to take chances on guys like Rohan, Stevens, Jenkins. Dangerfield was the last time they traded big time and that was because he wanted to come home.

Hawthorn have tried to trade for big name players and it hasn’t worked. Mitchell, O’Meara, Wingard et al.

Port tried it too getting Rockliff, Motlop, and Watts in the one go. It failed and they are now lauded for their drafting.

      Essendon - Shiel, Stringer, Smith.

The most successful trading club of recent times has been Richmond who were able to pillage Gold Coast but even then without the core stars that were drafted by them (Martin, Cotchin, Riewoldt) they would’ve been nothing.

All great teams have been build by developing the kids and then trading in role players.

so you are saying you like who we recruited as snr players last few years
        im saying i dont

        its pretty simple
        I have said 5 times
i dont like who we have recruited in the snr players last few years
I hoped i trusted our recruiters
        I was wrong
        Other clubs have been right
I think the table last couple of years confirms that
I cant see us being top8 again till maybe 2022 if the heavens align and if Kennedy, Bud Rampe are replaced
Maybe you can see what I cant?

Who cares who we recruited as senior players. They haven't worked out but they cost us nothing. I'd be more worried if the kids we were drafting weren't amounting to much, but for the most part they appear to be a good group of decent youth. However we need a superstar at some point if that group is to contend and the likelihood is we will have to trade for him.

This is not a video game. You don’t just get to choose anyone from the AFL player list to come to your club. We are fighting some significant barriers being in Sydney. We’ve tried to get other players here but they didn’t want to come even after offering more money.

And yes, personally I was happy with the recruitment of Taylor, Gray, and Brand last year for the price we paid for them (nothing). I think Brand is going to be a good player for us if he isn’t injured. Taylor and Gray have not worked out so far but hindsight is fantastic.

              i disagree
I respect everyone is entitled to their view

BUT...why not give ourselves the best chance
tally up the money spent on the snr players x 6 or 7 last few years

put that together for two mid players that are serious players even if $550k each pa and it would be the same $ as they 6 or 7 combined wouldnt it ?

we have to get better at making this happen otherwise more of the protracted bottom of the table performances where we stack the backs......slingshot.......which i like.......but if not the quality on the park we will remain 10th to 17th on the table

outlier games will happen ie the worst game by GWS in their history

              thats also true !!!

                totally agree with Brands potential
                no argument
                1 from 7 though ?

for me that is the problem

it certainly aint a video game

                Its a lot higher stakes

and if we cant make it happen that is a problem that has to be fixed otherwise mediocrity is the status quo

maybe we want different things ?

Happy to have a difference of opinion. What irked me though was that you were willing to gamble and profit off our lack of future success.

I actually do think that the AFL are getting closer to equalisation than ever before. If you had told me that Port, Brisbane, and St Kilda had a real shot at a premiership 24 months ago, I would not have believed that for one second. Therefore, I can’t accurately predict where we will be in 2022 but I do think with even luck we have a decent chance to be back up the ladder with or without A grade recruits.

                    interesting re that reaction

I dont really want to bet

nor profit ......... but when money is on the table then all arguments stop and or everything gets very real on were we really stand.....

Agree Saints appear to have recruited aggressively with snr players as another example

i cant predict the future either sadly.........im sure many people didnt think it would be 66yrs between the first controlled flight with the Wright brothers and then landing on the moon !!!!

I just dont like our recruitment of snrs last few years....and I truly believe that we could have done better......I would give that part of our strategy a D minus to be honest !

We are all accountable at some level for decisions we make and sadly it appears to that the lack of a couple more key mids vs the 6 or 7 we did recruit has plagued us and left us low low low on the table

I think we wanted to recruit a number of quality players who either chose to go to other clubs or decided to stay with their current club. So we ended up with a number of would be bargains. Maybe a few will turn out okay. Brand, Thurlow and Taylor might be winners when we look back a couple of years from now.

We wanted to recruit Joe Daniher, and if we had succeeded, we would have lost Papley and our #5 pick, Stephens. The fact that we held firm and didn't give away the farm turned out to be the right move. Often, not recruiting, ends in the best result.

I think our recruiters were right in their assessment that we had fallen out of the premiership window after 2016 and we needed to go to the draft to rebuild with youth. Alternatively, giving up draft picks to supplement our experienced list would have fallen short, and then we might be looking at an empty shell of team this year. It's true that we are a bottom half of the ladder team now, but we can see a bright future with a large core of good young players that should be with the Swans for many years.

i still think that our strategy can have both.
but we have done very badly with the snr recruits which affects our ability to compete and a slow systemic rise.....
if i was a recruitment manager i would put my hand up and say i got that part wrong and it has made life tougher then expected.......the ladder shows and a game against GWS where GWS played the worst ever in their history doesnt support a trend upwards just yet

Were there any specific trades where an elite player went to another club that you think we should have competed for? Like for instance, should we have gone after Tom Lynch? Or Lachie Neale? Where did we go wrong? Any ideas for this trade season?

When we recruit some one from other clubs, ALL the following conditions have to be met:
                            1. The player wants to come.
                            2. His partner/ family are OK to come.
                            3. We can pay what they want.
                            4. We have enough cap space.
                            5. We can reach a trade with their clubs; we can offer the pick or player they want.
                            6. Appropriate Contract status....... and etc
BTW, we need to fill the team with enough players per our the cap and regulations. So we cannot have all the GUNS!
Who knows how many we have tried to recruit but failed.

[QUOTE=Blood Fever;800086]In 2011 he inherited a flag from Thompson. Freak team that were only denied 4 flags because of woeful kicking v Hawks in 2008. By the way, were you happy with win v Giants and the coaching tactics?

Longmire inherited his list from Roos as well

I just don’t think it’s right to denigrates Scott’s achievements when Longmire hasn’t achieved any more.

I was happy with the coaching and performance as I stayed in the game day thread

I think the writing off of Gray and Taylor on this board is premature. It’s been an abnormal season and they still have a chance to come good

Also, why do some posers happily bag the players, but get upset and defensive if anyone dares to question Longmire?
