Daniher will not be coming to us as a trade. He is a RFA, his contract with Essendon ends on 31st October. Remember JD was very unhappy that Essendon didn't take up our trade offer last year. If he is still keen to get to us -

We put a contract in front of him of whatever form we like that will be acceptable to him. If Essendon don't choose to match the contract, they will get a compo pick from the AFL according to the AFL's "secret formula", JD signs with us, costs us just salary.

Essendon have the option to match that contract, but JD doesn't have to sign it. In that case they could ask us to trade picks which we need for this draft and/or players (Heeney, Mills standard of player). We won't be trading them any players they want (like last trade period) and we don't have picks as we need them to draft Campbell and Gulden. Ends in a stand off like Jack Martin last year.

JD can then nominate for the PSD where, given his desire to get out of the fishbowl in Melbourne, we are likely to have a pick high enough to select him for free, like Carlton did with Jack Martin last year.

So if he wants to still come and we still want him I reckon Essendon just take the compo pick and move on. Dodododoro doesn't "win" this trade, first one he's ever lost :-)

I think the skill with Daniher will be in offering a contract that is good enough to get him to the Swans, but as you say, contains a significant performance component. I don't think that's going to be easy, as either the Bombers or a club like North (PSD) could match it. Also a low contract as a FA means a second round draft pick as compensation. The Bombers will have been wargaming this all year, I don't think they'll accept that outcome.

So I can see us trading for him, and having to offer something similar to the pick 9 from last year.

This is all on the basis he's going to be a 50plus goal a season forward. I wonder how confident our medical team are that this is going to happen?

        Helpful summary - cheers.

Apparently, Daniher is close to playing now. His worth as a restricted free agent will heavily depend on how he goes. If he plays well upon return and stays uninjured then his salary will sky-rocket. If he struggles and/or gets injured again then he will go for a song. It has been suggested that Brisbane are interested on him. I wonder whether they might end up being his destination given they are right in the premiership window?

Its a question of whether we'd rather put together a big enough contract to outbid the Bombers (and guarantee a first round compensation pick) or pay him less but give up draft picks via trade. PSD is pretty risky I'd think. We might think its less of a risk to trade than to have to guarantee a lot of $ in his contract.

So, if we want Daniher we might have to do something like split our first rounder for two lower first rounders and use one for Daniher, one for Campbell.

Another point of note is that the guaranteed portion of a contract is what determines Free Agency compensation.

If it is heavily incentivised(heres hoping) and the guaranteed is low, they will be lucky to get a second round pick

He's potentially the best forward in the AFL and a million dollar player. Ben King as a second year player is on $600k plus

Interesting that Terry Wallace says we have the best young group of kids under the age of 23 in the AFL on SEN.

Names McCartin, Stephens, Dawson, Rowbottom, Blakey, Florent, Hayward, Mills and Papley, Heeney, (though the last two are 24). Jumping on the Swans train....

Add to that Warner and Bell.... all looking up

No one is giving Danniher anywhere near that anytime soon.

GWS may do a Buddy trick on us if he wants to go to Sydney, cant see Cameron staying

This is my view of the situation as well.

I don't see why we need to enter a recruitment race with anyone. We offer Joe a contract we think is fair, as if he were a UFA. I think if we agree to terms with Joe he will find his way to the Swans. The play for Essendon was last year. They blew it and we lucked out. I think they just take the AFL compo and move on. If we can't reach an arrangement with the parties, we let it go and move on.

We shouldn't be desperate to recruit a high risk player. Things are going well enough without Daniher. Our first pick this year can be used to draft or recruit a KPP, if we want.

As a 2nd year player he is still under his Rookie deal and normally could get upto about 270k (130k base, 4-5k game plus 15-20k bonuses) but would be half that this year

I’d love to get JD for free on a moderate salary, but suspect it won’t be that easy. Jack Martin put a ridiculous price on his head: $1million plus this year to prevent another club picking him in the PSD.

North are cashed up and looking for a forward.

I really hope you are all right but I don’t think the Dodo likes to lose!

                                Good analysis. Thank you.

It makes sense for Brisbane to target Daniher because scoring power is what they lack and their 'window' is open. It doesn't make sense for the clubs with picks in front of us in the PSD to recruit him because they are much further from contention that we are, just beginning rebuilds, whereas our rebuild is far advanced and we are nearly ready to contend again. I absolutely see us contending for finals next year or 2022 at the latest and hopefully better than that.
