I think this a trade like this might work for all parties. Ronke to North , Higgins to Geelong . Constable to the swans

If this trade period is anything like previous years, we’ll get very hot under the collar about various targets, but very little will actually happen.

We do have holes on our list that need filling this year with mature players in the ruck in particular.

Given we do t have enough points to use pick 3 and match bids on the academy boys our options are limited to (1) splitting pick 3 (2) trading out one or more players with currency (I.e. from our best 22) (3) going into deficit either by using future picks or lack of points.

Option 4 would be do nothing and hope for the best!

Based on all that I can see us splitting pick 3 rather than taking it to the draft.

Pick 3 doesn't come along for us very often so I doubt we'll do anything but use it on a potentially elite talent.

If we don't have enough points we go into 2021 deficit, fairly simple stuff, the deficit just pushes out a pick next year, no biggie.

Why would you trade out pick 3 to cover points and protect our 2021 position? We know what we're getting with Campbell and Gulden, we won't pass on them just to pin our hopes on an unknown in the 2021 draft. There's plenty of draft busts every year, pick 3, Campbell and Gulden aren't.

Get the three elite talents this year, worry about 2021 draft next year, now is the time to strike.

For me the challenge is that we need to acquire a mature player or two, particularly a ruckman, maybe also a midfilelder, which we will have to trade for. We don't have the points this year to trade in players and match bids on C & G and use pick 3. We can't have everything.

The other (probably better on reflection) solution would be to give up future picks for players (and we could even try and get back a pick in this years draft - if we offer up a future 2nd for a player plus a present 3rd etc, giving us more points this year). But that does compromise our draft hand in 2021. 2021 is allegedly better than 2020.

2020 also has a much higher element of risk than usual because none of the VIC players have played this year.

The issue I see is who are we going to let go to partake in this smorgasbord of goodies. Assuming we are aiming for #3, Campbell, Gulden, Daniher and Preuss in the draft or via trade, RFA etc. that is five places that we need to free up on the senior list. If there is a reduction in list sizes as mooted it would be more. If not Daniher and Preuss we still have a need for a key forward and a ruck so need to make space on the senior list for them.

Our financial situation is such that we are unlikely to to want to pay out any contracted players and the ones we would like to replace are very unlikely to attract any interest for a trade. Sam Gray heads this group followed by Lewis Taylor. Elijah Taylor has a contract and has been stood down but it is not clear if his transgressions have actually breached his contract in a way that he can actually be sacked. We may attempt to trade him out to one of the WA clubs for a pick swap or one of their surplus fringe rucks.

There is no indication that any of our senior players is considering retirement. They are all contracted and in these difficult times are probably wanting to collect their loot for another year. Franklin, Kennedy, Naismith and Reid are all expected to play on.

This just leave our uncontracted players where we need to either trade or delist at least four and possibly up to seven. Heading the list would be those who are not injured but were not selected four our game against Geelong despite our very long injury list. They are:

            Brand
            Foot
            Ling
            O'Riordan

Would be sorry to see any of them go but they might all need to.

            There is also the injured

            Ronke
            Stoddart

Again unhappy if they leave but footy is a brutal business.

            There are the whipping boys

            Thurlow
            Clarke

Both have shown a bit recently

I don't think any of the eight names above will attract much interest from other clubs who are also needing to shed players. Maybe Ronke could go for a late pick or a pick swap but that is about it. The Swans should only be interested in a potential No1 Ruck or a KPF. We do not need any more fringe players who will likely become list cloggers.

We have eight players on our rookie lists and delisting any of them does not create a position on our senior list. It is expected that most of them will be delisted anyway.
            Amartey
            McLean
Cannot see both being retained. Both are almost a player but not quite there. Both are too short to be the No1. ruck so more likely a tall forward. McLean not agile enough and have seen very little from Amartey this year.
            Maibaum
Not required with McCartin down back and Melican going OK.
            Reynolds
            Injured again and likely gone
            Rowles
Unfortunate but he has not been given a chance with COVID
            Knoll
May retain if the club believe he will eventually make a first ruck due to our dire ruck situation otherwise gone.

            Cat B
            Wicks
Has shown enough to warrant retaining as a rookie but unless the rules have been changed we can not retain both Amartey and Wicks as third year rookies.
            O'Connor
By all reports the Irishman has been very promising and could be given another year as a rookie if he wants to stay.

Until the AFL decides on the shape of the lists and also the Swans participation in the VFL things remain a bit clouded but at a minimum I am expecting at least four of the named senior players and at least four of the rookies to be not with the Swans next year.

Don't forget people, our pick 3 will be more likely to be pick 4 or 5 by the time we get to use it: (1) Bulldogs match an early bid on Ugle-Hagan (likely), (2) Adelaide gets an early compensation pick for Sloane (possible but less likely).

O'Connor has a contract for next year, suspect going no where.

Pick 3/Pick 4 - Same difference. We will have the third live pick. No chance Adelaide gets pick to compensation for Crouch. It means we will have the opportunity to select one of McDonald, Hollands, Phillips, or Thilthorpe. Two of these four will still be available and that is a good thing!

It’s a big difference though cause Adelaide is not getting a round one condensation pick for Rory ATKINS

That sentence is a work of genius. So much going on.

Lots of excellent posts. I especially agree with and appreciate AB Swannie's analysis. I'm not too worried about carrying a deficit with our second round pick next year, but will be a pity if it is the first round pick that's effected, especially if we finish down the ladder again. Still, I would take the deficit over the alternatives we have canvassed. An excellent draft haul now suits us best. Never mind the vagaries of a possibly better draft year next year. We won't get better than pick 3 this year or better value than Campbell and Gulden (thanks to the Academy discount and because they are locals with no go home factor).

We only have to be competitive with other offers if he really wants to come to Sydney.
