2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

When is the AFL going to announce list sizes for next year? They're leaving this a bit late imo. Official trades begin in a week, don't they?

Do they need agreement from the AFLPA, or is it tied into the salary cap negotiations?

My impression is that they're bound up together. I also have the impression that they could resolve the issue for next year only or try and resolve the whole question going further forward into the future and they are trying to do the latter (because it obviously gives everyone more certainty in negotiations, especially for multi-year contracts). However, if the AFL and AFLPA are unable to reach agreement more broadly, they may settle for an agreement governing just the next season or something. I got this impression from reading about an interview with one of the list managers or footy bosses or whatever, in clubland. I could definitely just have made it all up.

Maybe it's time for a 19th team in the AFL after all. Base them "hub style" in the bowels of an abandoned freighter
outside the old Risdon zinc works on the Derwent. They can be called the Tassy Convicts or something similar. Hogan
can be captain, ET, Brad Crouch, the two kebab guys from Richmond, DeGoey, Toby and anybody else who has
had a run-in with the law. The locals will love the connection with Tasmania's illustrious convict history. And it will
create a bye each week as part of the new 18 round home-and-away season everyone really wants.

If only our club had such fresh and unconventional management!

Swans will have made our own assessment of Hayes in his draft year. We may not rate him.

We may be burnt by our experience with Knoll and McLean, neither of whom look like delivering on their potential.

On the positive: Cheap replacement for Jeremy Cameron.
On the negative: Seems very similar to Himelburg, so not sure he adds much value.

On the massive positive: We dont get another player-with-problems.

Taught Lloyd when he was at school. The most polite, gentlemanly person I have met. In fact, apparently Freo have been worried he hasn't got enough mongrel. On the positive side, he would get a big pass mark for our No Dickheads policy.

List sizes and TPP are bound by the CBA which has two years to run. Any changes the AFLPA has to agree to amend the CBA.

GWS can have Hogan. They have massive issues, pretty much all bought upon themselves with their years of crap tough guy culture. Maybe players are wising up to the fact that there are platy of other clubs with a better culture, more fans and better prospects. They can take the scraps.

Speaking of, there are probably no top flight ruckmen available so I'd be happy for us to take a youngster like Meek, or Hayes, or anyone else who has been on an AFL system for a few years and with a bit of promise. Can't be worse than our current stocks. Not for Aliir though please - he stays.

Way to drive up the bid though, even of it is nice to hear.....

Those trade radio guys need to take a course in logical thinking. They say we desperately need a key defender and should use pick 3 to draft West Australian Denver Grainger-Barras. The reason we need to do this is because a contracted key defender, Aliir, has been offered a bigger contract by Port Adelaide, who need Aliir to be their key defender to take on those big bodied forwards (who perhaps DGB will be able to cover once he has a few years in the AFL to develop, given that he's skinnier than Nick Blakey atm). They forgot to mention that we have Melican and Brand, let alone BOC. They also belatedly added that Tom McCartin did well playing defence this year.

Their logic goes (if they could remember who is on our list), that a team that has Rampe, plus 7 defenders over 190 cm. in Aliir, McCartin, Melican, Brand, Dawson, Gould and O'Connor, should use pick 3 in the draft to replace one of them, who is under contract and doesn't have to go anywhere.

They did suggest that we straight swap Aliir for ruckman Hayes, who they rated very highly. They also were surprised, as I was, that Stoddart was delisted, rating him a potential 200 gamer. Maybe Stoddart's back injury was more serious than was reported.

I wouldn't mind getting Mason Cox and playing him as our #1 ruckman, a better position for him than key forward. Collingwood seem desperate to unload some salary cap. Lloyd Meek sounds okay as well.

If we take pick 3 to the draft and both McDonald and Thilthorpe are taken, we pick up Hollands, who may not solve our long term KPF problems, but should be a very good player and should start as a forward. It seems that we will kick this can down the road another season, giving us time to see how the Franklin + Reid combo goes, fitness-wise, as well as another development year for McLean and Amartey. Aliir gave some good signs that he could develop into a handy forward/ruck if played there full time. If we get good service from a couple of those key defenders like Brand, Melican, BOC and Gould, McCartin should find himself back in the forward line. I can see a post-Franklin tall forward line of Aliir, McCartin and Blakey as being very solid and hard to handle for most key defenders.

If Cameron is going to Geelong, Daniher to Brisbane and Hogan to GWS,

I'm coming around to the idea of drafting Ben Brown if he is only going to cost a pick in the 20s, which is what people are saying. I don't know why he had an off season this year and obviously that's highly relevant. But if he can recapture his form of the previous three seasons he would create a really handy additional target up forward and take the pressure off our other forwards despite his lack of defensive pressure, as well as relieving in the ruck. However, apart from the caveats, it seems he may be going to Melbourne.

I'll be happy if we decide that Paddy McCartin is worth taking a punt on also. I know we wouldn't do it if we didn't have good reasons to think it would pay off.
