Agree. I thought we missed the boat last year with Sier at Collingwood.
The problem for us is Geelong's team is very, very old and at some point, surely, they will have to play a few more youngsters.

It's a good idea that needs closer examination.

Suppose we were to make that trade. What would we offer Geelong to get the deal done?

Currently we have picks 3, 22, 52, 56, 76, 94 and all our 2021 picks. We need to acquire 500 to 600 more points to match offers on Campbell and Gulden, so we won't be trading out many picks.

Constable is 21 years of age, has played 9 games, and was drafted with pick 36 in 2017. By comparison, Kennedy was traded to Sydney with McGlynn in 2009, for picks 39, 46, and 70 after 13 games with Hawthorn across two seasons.

We would need to offer something like a second-round or third-round pick to get the deal done. We cannot offer our current picks because we need them. A future third-round pick looks most likely, but would it be enough?

The latest article from SEN suggests that AA doesn't want to leave Sydney, we don't want him to leave either, and he wants to play more in defence. Thus our interest in Hickey. I don't know how much truth there are in these types of articles, but I'd be happy if it was true. Personally, I want AA to stay.

Personally, I see Aliir as a key defender. He is not really a ruckmen and can get lost as a forward at times. Its pleasing to see he wants to stay and that we want him too!

So why wouldn't we want to be in a position were were probably 5 or 6 years ago where we had an abundance of great young midfielders and they were battling it out for a spot in the side? Then we keep who we think are the best options and let the others go in a trade?

I can't actually see how having too many quality mids is a problem we don't need! And I am actually bullish, and have been for the past couple of years that Constable is going to be a clearance star if given the right opportunity and will be better than any other option we currently have (think prime Joey).

Just my opinion and we'll see how it turns out.

We also lost Zak Jones, who has proven to be a very good inside mid, but couldn't get much time in our midfield. Take a look at GWS for another example. Jack Higgins is leaving Richmond. He's a very good player. That's what can happen when there's an excess of players competing for limited spots. The spuds will stay on, but the good ones want to play now.

Constable has a much better chance of making it at Geelong, given that their youngest inside mid is Guthrie at 28 yo. At the Swans, JPK is the only midfielder reaching retirement age in the next 5 years, plus there will be players the same age or younger than Constable, like Campbell, Gulden, Stephens, Warner, Bell, Ling, McInerney and Wicks fighting for midfield spots. I could only find room for 1 of those 8 who makes our best 22 next year. Maybe Stoddart was another casualty of our midfield depth.

Yes that is what happened but that was a result of both blind loyalty and some bad decision making on behalf of both our coaches and football department as they decided to stick with the players that had gone to battle for us time and again (Hanners as an example) at the expense of Mitchell and others.

I still argue that having an abundance of talent in the middle is better than being conservative and would trust and hope we would not make the same mistakes as we had in the past!

And for the record I personally would rate Constable as a better prospect above anyone on our current list as an inside midfielder (and I rate Rowbottom), he's a 192cm bull who knows how to find it and is a better user than Joey.

I disagree. I don’t think we’d be bonkers not to go after Constable, but we Should certainly be trying to bolster a midfield in some way that will lose Kennedy in a year or two. You just can’t have enough good mids, some of them don’t turn out and if there is a squeeze for spots they either adapt to flanks or pockets, or they get squeezed out. Depth is also important.

Looking at it from my work perspective, it would be like us not going after more accounts as we have enough big fish on the books and some smaller fish coming through that we’re optimistic about . So let’s sit on our hands and hope they all continue on their current output / trajectory and not even try to add more to the pool. It’s madness to me. Some of the mids on our books ( or about to be on our books) will quote possibly not make it, either for injury or failure to live up to potential. Kennedy could go down early, Parker could go down early. Campbell could do two ACL’s. We lack depth, if we can get a big mid in on the cheap ( relatively speaking ) then yeah I think we’d be mad not to.
