This Hickey rumour only confirms my suspicion that Longmire has yet to relieve himself of the belief that you can have a good ruck division by substituting quantity for quality.
I think we should put pick 3 on the table as part of a deal to get a ruckman of reasonable quality. Depending on the player, we could give up pick 3 for a ruckman and enough points to cover the academy boys.
Offer pick 3 for Mason Cox and Collingwood pick 16, or their 2021 1st round pick. Essentially try to get Cox + 1000 points.
Other targets:- Ratagulea. Maybe gets squeezed out with Cameron. He can ruck.
- Peter Wright, if he's enthusiastic about rucking in a change of mind, career saving epiphany.
- Ladhams or Hayes from PA
- CJC or Chol from Richmond.
But not Hickey.
We are not going to get what we need in the draft with Pick 3, so lets use it to get a decent ruckman, or move it to the 2021 draft and try again next year.
If we forego a new ruckman, lets just wing it with McLean and Amartey, ostensibly transforming to a 'no ruckman' game. 50 times a game we can listen to Matt Stevic screaming Sydney NO RUCK. We play a totally negating setup at the ruck contests. This will suit our transition from a slow powerful midfield to a quick and agile one, which we'll need chasing down those opposition mids after they win the ball in all the ruck contests.
In the end, there's no point pretending we have a ruckman in the game if we really don't. We either get someone who can do the job, or just set up to play a totally different game at the stoppages.Comment

Part of a ruck problems over the last few years has been our drafting strategy of picking up forward/rucks rather than pure rucks. Apart from Naismith and Knoll, all of our other rucks have bee drafted/traded as forward/rucks - Sinclair, Cameron, Amartey, McLean even Tippett. It's not their number one skill but have been forced into it. We have an obsession of picking players who are flexible which is good to a degree but for a specialist position like Ruck we need to start drafting/trading players who are rucks first and foremost. This is why I would be against trading for Cox or Wright.Comment

Pick 3 would be overs for Treloar, not for a 30 year old 2nd ruck. Pick 3 you’d be talking Grundy and they’d be paying half his salary.
They ran through the premiership ruckman for the last 10 years on Trade Radio and they were almost entirely role players (Nankervis types) rather than superstars.
I think the sweet spot for ruckmen is quite small: a durable, cheap, competitive one.
It’s the longest gestation of any position and injury risk is very high. Highest risk position as a recruit.
I wonder if they should have a special category of rookie “R” list for ruckmen. Allow clubs to recruit lots cheaply to increase the supply.Comment

It’s probably the hardest role to fill.Comment

Which is why I can see clubs trying to get forwards to ruck rather than vice versa.
Tom Hawkins is interesting because he only takes ruck contests fwd but completely dominates when he does.Comment

Neither Richmond, Geelong, Port or Brissie have rucks in top 6 of ruckmen in comp. West Coast won premiership without Niknat.
In looking for a ruckman it should be a moneyball pick. Look for a crash and bash ruckman that can run and mark like Nankervis who is now a 3 time premiership ruckman.
The ruck role is the most over-rated in footy.
Use our pick 3 on a quality mid or forward that will be with us for 10+ years.

+1. Time to move on. Unfortunately, for the first time in a few seasons there are few suitable options in our preferred age demographic - and it's going to get worse as fewer clubs are prepared to invest in young rucks only to have them poached by others. Hickey is an eminently unimpressive option, but may be the best of a bad bunch.Comment
