Not much to take out of that game, loss was to be expected given the team on paper. At least we’re heading for a high draft pick.
Longmire’s continuing misuse of Allir is frustrating. He’s capable of being an AA level intercept defender, particularly when he’s given a consistent run. Instead he’s played forward, ruck or not at all. Criminal that he wasn’t selected last night
Nick Haynes, Jeremy McGovern, Luke Ryan, Jordan Ridley, Tom Stewart, Nick Vlastuin, Jeremy Howe, James Sicily. I've probably missed a few but these are guys who would be well ahead of Aliir in skill level in both marking and kicking and so I can't see him ever overtaking these intercepters to be in AA contention whether he is given time to develop there or not.Comment

I personally think Aliir is overrated on here. I like him and think he should be in the team but he is a fringe best 22 rather than a potential AA defender. He is not good enough to play on a power forward as a key defender and when compared to other good intercept defenders he is too inconsistent with both his marking and kicking to play as the loose. At times he is fantastic but then he will drop a sitter. His kicking is also slow and often short. I know people will argue that he hasn't been given time to develop as this defender and has been thrown around to different positions too much which may be somewhat true but overall I think that has been because he has never been as valuable in defence as we had hoped.

I'm in the camp you refer to of the view that he hasn't been given enough chance to develop as a defender. I think his selection in different positions has been as much related to the dearth of ruck options and talls.
His confidence appears low and I reckon that may be because he feels his position in the team is always in question. That's certainly how I feel. Low confidence in turn produces poor performance. I'd like to see some faith invested in him for the rest of the year.Comment

If something is too good to be true, we witness that yesterday. The GWS game was a game where the opposition was very poor, it was never us being very good. The inability of just about anyone to win a 50/50 contest was disturbing. Bring on position 17th, and maybe we can recruit one or two decent players next year.Comment

Have you considered maybe the players might have simply ran out of gas after last week?Comment

We have not got the most out of Aliir.

top 6 defenders we have at the moment. He is actually a fairly experienced footy player these days. Sure, he is not Nick Haynes and
will never be. But he's not alone in that category. Hopefully he can himself into a very good "average" player.Comment

I thought that last night was a wake up call for all of us. We are still well behind most teams. There were a few positives such as the improved form of Blakey and Fox and the promise of others like Rowbottom and Dawson. Other than that, most of the team struggled to have an impact and we did not give our forwards much chance with poor delivery. Our selection error of no key defender to replace Rampe exposed us and if Lobb had been holding his marks early we could have ended up being very embarrassed by that. Still, we are blooding a lot of youngsters at present and some of these will make it.

Just checked the AFL's 'highlights' of last nights game......Fremantle v Sydney Highlights | Round 13, 2020 | AFL - YouTube
Don't bother watching, it's a scoreboard graphic for the entirety of the 6 minute package with commentary in the background. Bloody useless AFL....
Speaking of highlights, did anyone see the Goodes highlights package they had on Seven after last nights televised game for the Indigenous Round featuring stars and coaches talking about just how good Adam was.....of course, it's all a little too late but it was great to watch all the same. The man was magic!
Not related to this round but I also thought I'd mention a great ABC article on Robert Muir and the struggles he faced on the footy field and post footy. A real eye opener and a not at all surprising litany of persecution and injustice. We've heard it all before from other indigenous players and things are slowly changing for the better but what Muir went through was tragic and totally unwarranted.....and DO NOT call him 'Mad Dog'.

That's a pretty good group of defenders in your list. Except for McGovern, who has played forward and rucked at times as well, an Sicily who played forward before settling in as a defender, the rest have had time to hone their skills playing week in, week out, in the same defensive role. Something not afforded to Aliir. Consistency hasn't been his strong point, but some of that is understandable, given the circumstances. Aliir has still only played 59 games.
Aliir is quite a good user of the ball. He's quick to find an open target and usually hits him with accurate kicking. He generates at lot of offense when he plays ruck.
I don't think Longmire has made the best selections in defence. We really should have 2 tall defenders and not depend on Rampe, Fox or Mills to be that 2nd key defender. It was a mistake not to play Aliir this week. We got lucky in the Lobb had a very poor game and dropped a lot of easy marks and missed his shots on goal. Otherwise the score would have been worse. Without checking, I would think we play the shortest defence in the league. Playing a shorter defence also reduces the tall marking options rebounding from defence, which accounts for the high number of times the ball keeps coming back into our defensive 50.Comment

Hey mods, there is a bug / issue with pasting in abc.net.au URLs as they always stuff up the thread. As they have done todayComment
