What happened after half time was we started playing ab extra onballer, Bell. Mostly it negated the impact of Fyfe and Mundy. But a couple of their other boys got off the leash at times. But the reality is that they attacked out of our back half and destroyed us that way. In trying to negate we actually made them stronger.

Longmire had no other plan other than to negate them. It wasn't about attacking. That is the problem. One Dale Ron Barrassi used to say the best form of defense is attack and he is right. The sooner AFL coaches wake up to this the better the game will be

The problem is that when one team comes with intent to play a very high pressure game, calling it negating if you wish, there is no response except to try to match the intensity, or you will just be overrun. So any side that can effectively play a high pressure game can dictate the nature of the game. The exception is to execute all aspects of the game to a high level, then you can open up the game, like Hawthorn did during their threepeat days. Richmond are very effective of getting the ball moving forward quickly and relentlessly, so it's difficult to apply pressure in numbers, because the ball is moving away from the last contest very quickly, avoiding congestion.

Freo are not so great offensively, but they can apply pressure and keep it going all game. So that's the game they played against us. Should we be surprised?

We simply can't win enough contests in the pressure cooker to get our offense rolling. I thought we tried to play the kind of footy that is taking us in the right direction. So many times we had the ball in defence and Freo had all the outlets blocked when our player looked up to find an open man. Then we kicked to a contest and we were beaten at most of those.

Kennedy made us look slower.. Less spread on the outside. Fremantle are a well drilled unit and their pressure caused a lot of turnovers. It also meant we didn't go direct. A lot more lateral movement coming out of defence. Thought Melican was good again. You have to go with the players you have but our injurery list is not chronic. I do believe either AA or Mauibum was the right pick. Kennedy selection wasn't a good one.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Agree on Blakey. 7 inside 50s too - the most by a Swan. Usage was a bit mixed. Sometimes just needs to take the simple option, but he'll learn.

              Our senior players were poor.

Kennedy and Parker both kicked poorly and make us slower. They were basically smashed.

Papley was ok in the first quarter but very ordinary after that. Couldn’t look further from the best small forward in the comp.

I love Sammy Reid but he adds nothing these days. McCartin as a 19 year old is a far more threat. That says it all.

On the positive front I thought Fox and Cunningham played well and loved Lloyd taking the game on by kicking into the corridor. McCartin and Rowbottom were the pick of the kids.

Yep agreed. Beaten convincingly at the coal face. Mundy owned the inside. This is going to happen. Joey will be better for the run.

However playing the extra at the contest might have stemmed the bleeding a little but once we were 3-4 goals down, gave us next to no chance of actually winning the game. We effectively were playing one down forward of the contest and the Freo just cleaned up on the intercept marks.

I think we really missed Rampe. He has been driving us out of defence - his ability to take the right option out of defence is just elite. It also meant Mills had to man up and couldn't play the intercept role. Next week I think Foot might be an out for another tall defender.

Fair summation. Thought Mills stood up again. His spoil running backwards and then winning the ball off Fyfe was probably the one highlight of the game.

Kennedy was off the pace but will get better. One player who was very disappointing was Thurlow - coughed it up too easily when he panicked under not that much pressure. If his contract is up this year, I wouldn't renew it, despite his kicking skills.

not one player deserved any accolades tonight except perhaps for cuningham. Rowbottome didnt get into the game until the last qrt. A disgraceful effort after last week. Also on coomentatorsa amazing how dunstall changes his tune.

Agree - Kennedy in the first half looked completely lost and only improved slightly in the second half. Our selection to replace Rampe with Kennedy was crazy. Freo have 2 very tall players and we should have included one of Alir, Mailbum or Gould (is he ever going to get a chance this year?).

Plus our forwards were not given a chance with the terrible entries - bombing the ball wide and long and having a forward short in numbers all night. Terrible coaching and little leadership on the ground.

If something is too good to be true, we witness that yesterday. The GWS game was a game where the opposition was very poor, it was never use being very good. The inability of just about anyone to win a 50/50 contest was disturbing. Bring on position 17th, and maybe we can recruit one or two decent players next year.

Yep - we need a tall defender, mobile tall forward and hopefully a fit tall ruckman. Not much to ask for.

Oh yeah - and a strategy refit for the coaching team - how about some attacking, play on football - probably too much to hope for.

Horse does seem unwilling to roll the dice on the midfield contest. Seems content to limit our scoring to remain competitive. This is fine when we are protecting a lead but no good if we are chasing a few goals. Teams like Richmond and to a lesser extent the Dogs might get away with this as they can move the ball effectively by hand and spread rapidly, but we're not at that level.

Oh well, I guess we can take heart that the game plan stopped a massive blow out............

Not much to take out of that game, loss was to be expected given the team on paper. At least we’re heading for a high draft pick.

Longmire’s continuing misuse of Allir is frustrating. He’s capable of being an AA level intercept defender, particularly when he’s given a consistent run. Instead he’s played forward, ruck or not at all. Criminal that he wasn’t selected last night
