I have been trying to work out who we might be targeting as a KPD next year. There is an U17 specialist CHB in the Swans Academy who looks pretty handy. Another red head BTW named Webster. Does anyone know how he is regarded by the club as a future prospect?

He's not a speculative pick for me. Just not rated appropriately by many.
Agreed. I was procrastinating so watched both the Colts GF game and one of the state games between SA & WA (10th October). Sheldrick was the best on ground in both games. His ability to hunt the ball seemed more like Lachie Neale than Parker or JPK. Maybe that is just his size.

In the state game, there was no Erasmus or Johnson for WA and no JHF for SA so it was hard to compare him to other highly-rated mids. It was also only one game but he was again best on ground hunting the ball. I really don't know how you can play so well in high-level under age competition and be considered so lowly by so many power rankings.

Matt Roberts and Warner also played. Roberts was one of the best for SA and importantly had more influence as the game went on. He played more a hybrid role and worked hard to make space.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't think that Warner had the best game. Just like with Sheldrick, it was only one game but interesting none the less.

There's nothing wrong with it, IMO, just a comment on the frequency of the bleeping.

I really liked how Angus in the WA Colt final game got on top after a very slow first qtr

The game plan by the Swans was to keep it moving super quick end to end and no inside mids fighting for the ball............this was super evident first qtr which didnt suit Sheldricks game at all

The inside mid that tagged Sheldrick (who got BOG in the final) was a very strong and aggressive mid for his age....186cm and 84kg https://www.wafl.com.au/player/bailey-jenkin

27 disposals for Sheldrick plus 2 goals and 4 tackles
14 disposals for Jenkin plus 2 goals and 8 tackles
Jenkin to be honest did his job in spades but I thought Angus should have still got BOG.

BTW Sheldrick really exploded forward middle of 2nd qtr and the remaining qtrs which enabled himself to put 10m on Jenkins. This meant some great opportunities for Angus but he also had to put in some major metres to get back on Jenkins (who tended to stay in the middle as a spare for the quick kick back out from Claremont).

I thought this was super risky tactics by the Swans and Jenkins but it just worked in the end...........I suspect Jenkins could NOT keep up with Sheldrick in the two way running but the blasting away kicks from Claremonts defence last qtr wasnt good enough and lead to turnovers/ intercepts.

Sheldrick also had super good body position with arm over the top of his 7cm taller opponent. This enabled Angus to pull push Jenkin at the last moment away or inside as Sheldrick tended to charge back towards his ruck and loop around onto his preferred foot and then sprint forward 40m.........great tank........but really smart starting positions at the ball ups to create space for where he wanted to be when it was go time

little bit of bite in the tackles by Sheldrick vs SA

Full game just above and Sheldrick and Roberts line up on each other at the first bounce !

Webster well regarded by the Swans. Another tall Billie King also well regarded and has played ruck in older age group games in the past.

Gabor is next age down who already was selected in the rams team this year and is held in high regard as well but he is a midfielder type not a key position.

Swans academy finds it hard to get talls of absolute top level quality - if you looked at the draft , interstate tall key position players were 198 plus in most instances - Swans get few of these boys coming through and not having as much exposure to AFL as the southern states often means they dont often have the skills and footy nous of the interstate kids.

Very interesting. Why do you think that is (ie, why don't we attract "absolute quality talls" to the Academy)?

I'm still a little disappointed we didn't take Arlo Draper with our 3rd pick - especially since learning he and Matty Roberts are best mates. I'll try not to bring this up any more, especially since I think I'm the only one that feels this way. Really happy with our other 3 picks. And hopefully Corey will be great.

I swung past training. Felt slightly sorry for Matty Roberts and Lachie Rankin who were mostly stuck looking on and having a few shots for goal while the rest of the team trained. Lachie seemed more extroverted and at ease than Matty. I wonder if Matty is a bit down about sliding to pick 35. He was talked about as a top 10 pick for much of the past couple of years including a fair bit of this year and he said he was aiming to be picked as high as possible. Plus it must be tough relocating to another city and quickly having to get to know a whole new group of people. It was nice to see JPK put his arm around Matty at one stage but a lot of the time Matty and Lachie were a little bit apart and on the outer. Matty is a bit of a unit - very solid thighs. Lachie obviously much slighter.

It is simple maths . How many A to B grade mid sized players are there in the AFL ? 100 ? 150 ? More ?? How many A to B grade talls are there ? 20 ? 30 ? The same percentage would work for our academy , its averaging what 2 players drafted a yr ? So there arent enough players up to the standard yet to give ourselves the chance of finding a good tall
