There is no way Buddy will be playing in 2023, and even if he did, what would the swans offer: $150,000 p.a. ? to play mostly reserves ?
2020 he missed the season
2021 he's a week by week proposition, while we rebuild a side
2022 If we are going to rebuild a forward line, he cant be the main man anymore.
2023 Its the post-buddy swans. as we tilt towards deep finals apperances.

I just read on the AFL website that the Swans have 21 players who come out of contract at season's end. Its one of the highest in the league. Assuming we wish to keep most of these, our football manager has a lot of work ahead of him!

Absolutely no doubt that the Hawks were behind Newcombe suddenly wanting a contract for three seasons 2022-2024 as part of his conditions for being drafted figuring it would put off the other 17 clubs so they could draft who they wanted at pick 2 and have Newcombe fall to their second pick.

Clubs were shocked at Newcombe's draft conditions but so glad they had their bluff and dodgy tactics called. Now I expect we are all quietly hoping Newcombe is a bust and Hawks have him on their books until 2024 :-)

Worth a look at the Hawks BF board MSD thread, apparently their two MSD picks are guns, Hawks forward half is now dripping with talent! Long may they languish at the foot of the table, club and supporters are unpleasant people.

Can't you find an example closer to home, rather than resorting to the US, BS?

To be fair to BS there are probably not many examples in the AFL that spring to mind.
So this is an apt analogy given the similarity in the potential circumstances i.e a superstar player assessed as being at the end of his career who felt that they had something still to offer and backed themselves to successfully deliver. It’s recent and the story was pretty well publicised so an ideal example in my mind to offer up.
Having said that I am vehemently against American expressions creeping into our game for example he’s the quarterback and sacked (tackled) are recent examples.
In my mind the discussion about Lance playing on in 2023 is probably one that should be revisited about this time next year as the list management team have plenty of work in front of them with other players needing to be re-signed and gaps to fill through the draft this year.

According to Fox Footy, West Coast are close to re-signing Brander. I thought he could have been a good target for us so I'm a little disappointed.

Incidentally, it's especially interesting to see how Amartey goes this week. If he can come good, he could fill the role we're looking for of a forward-ruck to back up our main ruck. But I am just not convinced about Amartey, especially as a forward.

I cant see this happening with buddy, as ruck is a far more specialised role, and its easier to cover for a lack of forwards.

We already are finals contenders, and have a good age profile right through the list. No real need for a mentor out there in 2023.

In 2023, Logan will be 20 year old, Sam Reid 31, Amartey 23 McLean 24 and if Paddy McCartin comes in as Rookie next year 27 years of age.
Sam is unlikely to be playing the whole year (as he is never injury free) and Paddy will be at best a 2nd tall player. Logan at age of 20 cannot be expected to be the main leader of the forward line. McLean and Amartey are yet to prove that they can be the main leaders.

Buddy may not be the answer but if we rely on the above group of forwards who have not proven themselves to be able to go the journey of the whole year with consistent performances, we may not make the finals in 2023. Either one of them have to play and perform amazingly well for us to be able to have the scoreboard impact.

The reason we are talking about Buddy 2023 is due to Buddy doing an interview with Jordan Lewis (close mate) and Buddy talking about the possibility of playing on in 2023. Buddy rarely does media. Buddy wants the football public talking about Buddy 2023.

So your bar was set pretty low right from the start in being thankful that he actually looks like getting through the last year of his contract?
Well he may not have delivered any premierships as obviously was the intention when we signed him but he certainly has delivered plenty of highlights and from what I can understand has turned out to be an exceptionally professional athlete and a teammate that adds value and is respected by his fellow players.
This is a club that doesn’t as a rule discard players that have something to offer easily unless faced with salary cap issues and/or list clogging. (Awaits standard feedback re Mummy etc )
Lance is still one of the very few players who gets me up from my seat when he gets the ball
