AFL 2021: Paddy McCartin, concussion issues, Sydney Swans, brother, mid-season rookie draft, list spot

Music to our ears. Says just what we want to hear.

Yes. I can only think that we aren't too worried about that and that there are still a number of questions to be answered otherwise we would have added him to our list already. Paddy mentioned that he is glad to be in Sydney (a) to be out of the fishbowl; and (b) to be close with his brother, Tom; and he also said that he has dealt with mental health issues over his journey in the past couple of years. Hopefully that combination of factors makes it pretty unlikely another club will pluck him away from us.

Incidentally, on the topic of drafting and other clubs - yesterday I went and had a look at the BF Port thread on Aliir - and apart from there being wall to wall delight about having got AA (and so cheaply!) for nearly 500 posts, there was also a fair bit of praise expressed for Sydney and the way we go about it and that we are reasonable to deal with (as contrasted with Essendon).

          probably right BS.
Paddys manager has probably said duty of care and being in Sydney is best for Paddy.
I suspect that most clubs and human beings would respect that.
Paddys mental health is no1 right now.

Regarding Brother Paddy, I recall that the Saints were thinking of trying him down back at one stage because of his ordinary goalkicking, but then events unfolded.

Article about Don Pyke and his influence on the Swans.

Pyke's COVID break: Why John called Don for coach gig

Longmire: "He's been fantastic, everything we hoped and more."

Captain Josh Kennedy agreed, highlighting the Swans' improved ball movement throughout pre-season.

"The way he's able to see the game and dumb it down for us players, it's fantastic," Kennedy said.

Pyke certainly sounds like a great asset for the club to have. When we recruited him, I was happy that we had gained such an experienced coach, who has taken a team to the GF, as an assistant. Looks like it was a move that's now bearing fruit.

Got serious nous in the box now, Horse, Cox and now Pyke.

The first instalment of new weekly trade update: Roos make move on key, young Docker sitting on big offer (afl.com.au). Nothing of great relevance for us but hopefully there will be announcements at some stage of extensions for our talent that are coming out of contract, including Dawson, McCartin, Parker, Stephens, Warner and Gould.

These profiles read like they are all going to be stars but we should be close enough to the pointy end of the draft to add yet another highly regarded prospect - nice

Just interested to see what differences everyone saw with the strategy Carlton took on in 2020 and whether this showed potential vs the Premiers last night. Carlton lost by 3goals

They went for Saad, Williams, Fogarty etc to give them immediate run and carry and pressure experienced players

Would these players feature in the Swans 22 ?

This has been on the back of a few years of bringing on board experienced / impact players last few years to compliment their draft picks vs our picks of Thurlow, Menzel, Gray, Squizzy, Brand etc?

Not unlike the trajectory that the Saints have leaned into and moved up to 6th last year after we destroyed them the year before last round and we finished near the bottom in 2020.

                          New player numbers:
                          6. Zac Williams
                          8. Lachie Fogarty
                          16. Jack Carroll
                          26. Luke Parks
                          29. Corey Durdin
                          42. Adam Saad

How is our significant investment in Squizzy, Thurlow, Menzel, Gray, Brand showing up in our results vs if we invested in say two significant players like Saad and Williams ?

We wouldn't have had the salary cap. That's why we took a low-cost, high-risk punt on a few. I bet not one of our punts is/was on a wage over $250K. I bet Saad is on $600+K and Williams $900K.

But I'll back our list over Carlton long-term. Name a player they have aged 21 or under - bar Walsh, who has a no1 pick you'd expect high things of - that matches Rowbottom, Stephens, Blakey, Gulden, McDonald, Campbell, McCartin or McInerney for either clear potential or even elements of performance so far. Maybe De Koning?

I'll be very surprised if Carlton hold a spot above the bottom half of the eight and win more than one or two finals over the next five years.
'Delicious' is a fun word to say

Its such an interesting area to review, because the conversation would be dead if we were climbing up to 10th or 8th on the table or at least on a trajectory heading North with a bit of gusto.

                              Maybe i'm just impatient?

Im must admit though.......Im a big believer that when you get to the airport you need to switch vehicles to get to Tahiti.......and I feel we maybe in the taxi still !

                              Just checking my Math?

Average AFL list player income is $363k pa

So lets run with a low ball fig like you have suggested for Thurlow,Brand,Squizzy,Menzel,Gray etc x $250k per player = $1.25mill and Saad and Williams $650k each might be a fairer fig?

Yet you are alluding to Carlton wont be in the top 8 and win a couple finals next 5 years but we will?

Saints went 14th to 6th last two years after we smashed them last round 2019
                              Swans went 15th to 16th ?
                              Carlton went 16th to 11th

But as you pojnt out our juniors are rock solid and hold lots of promise..........compared to Carlton who wont feature? or vs Brisbane, Port, Cats, Dogs, Tigers ?

Carlton and Saints dont really have a go home factor or a cu later factor .....yet we do in good old Sydney.....gone are decent players in AA, Hannes, Jones, Mitchell, Membrey, Nannygate, Newman etc

But that maybe insignificant to how we really balance the books to be strong

To get Bud to Sydney we had to throw out the pineapples, plums, apples and bananas to keep the mango in the fruit salad..........we had to pay $1.5mill in 2021 and $1mill 2022 at 34yrs of age and 35yrs of age respectively ????

Is this the only factor we should really be arguing about?

we went long on one player and now we are 15th and 16th the last two seasons ? or the "experienced" nevilles we recruited instead of impact players like a Saad or Williams we let slip past and this hurt our capacity to win?

or have both these factors hurt us and left us at the bottom?

Kemp, Obrien, Walsh, DeKoning, Fogarty, Dow, Stocker all 21yrs of age and are hard to discount just yet? leaving 5 of them out vs our young guys doesnt seem to make sense to me?
