What a game by our boys. That was the best midfield performance we have put in for a very long time. Hard at the contest, hands were slick, lowered the eyes on the F50 entries. Great conversion in front of goal by the forwards (Wicks, Heeney and Papley outstanding). Excellent, tough defence against much taller opposition. Hipwood was absolutely owned by McCartain, Cameron pretty much unsighted and Rampe battled away against a much taller opponent.
So impressed by the youngsters in the midfield lead by Mills - he was just immense. Gulden and Logan just killed it for their first games. But the unsung hero watching it from the stands was Warner. I had multiple Lions fans asking who the number 1 was. He was tough around the packs and created so much space for his team mates. Plus he managed to explode away a few times himself. Something very good has happened to him in the off season.
Just ecstatic. Here's hoping we can carry on from this great start to 2021.Comment

A lot of questions answered tonight.
- Did we go about the rebuild correctly? Tick!
- Was it right to draft for speed and skill? Tick!
- Is Mills right for the midfield.
- Was it right to pass on acquiring another 'midfield bull'? Tick!
- Is this the list to take us to the next premiership? Tick!

467 players have kicked 3 on debut.
9 players have had 3+ goal assists on debut.
None had ever done both, until Errol Gulden tonight.Comment

Except that we also played three debutants in round 1 2016. Two of them played their 100th games tonight and the third has a claim to be BOG tonight (and isn't far away from his 100th - Driver Ave gutters permitting).Comment

The best start to a season I can remember since we last played 3 debutants in round 1 - 1990 - I was there.

How good was that. A genuine ruck who competes around the ground and a bunch of young talent. I reckon a few of the not-quite-so-young-but-still-newish players will be looking over their shoulders at some of those young-new-players. Warner and Wicks were great too.
Enjoyed Blakey managing to execute an inside-50 despite the ball not sitting up for him at every turn, by just sprinting down the wing and kicking at it every which way
If I had to criticise - defence looked a bit shaky at times, but held up well enough.
Just hope they can back up, and don't go all "kick it to Buddy" when he returns.Comment

Brisbane will give us a hiding. Our bad luck to draw them first up. Much better team than us. Dont reckon we have a tall who can go with O Mcinerney. Not sure we have a mid who can go with Lachie Neale either. Zorko will be a handful. Nightmare stuff thinking about Melican matching up on one of Daniher or Hipwood. SOS
Our midfield is no better. Hickey terrible in the last game. Gave Parker and Kennedy no chance. Kennedy looked slow too. Mills needs to be better than he was, but im expecting him to take a while to settle into the role. Florent was good, hope he plays more inside. Put Blakey inside too. Can't just stand on the outside expecting easy balls to come out we are a bottom four team with a bottom four midfield he wont get any easy balls. if thats how we are going to play him better to just leave him out or he will just be a bystander again. Rowbottom needs to find the ball more. If his plan is to win 17 disposals every week like last week then forget about it, we need more than that from one of our main mids. Hope Warner plays. Nothing to lose giving kids like him a run. Get Heeney in there to give our mids a spark. Another one who will just be wasted if he sits on the 50m arc waiting for the ball to come to him. Our inside 50 numbers are terrible and he'll never get it coming in clean enough to get the best out of him. Put him where the action is.
Will be a good lesson for us and we can still take a lot out of it. Good luck to the debuts.Comment

Credit to the coaches for using Hayden McLean to negate Harris Andrews.
Lachie Neale had little influence. Was this due to the work of George Hewett or “team defence”?Comment
