Has Wicks done that recently? I don’t think so. You could argue that in our team a player like Dawson ( maybe even Blakey) can be damaging at HB but no way has Wicks been able to shut such players down recently.
I would rather play someone who can cause damage himself- another Paps would be great!
Papley chases the footy first and foremost. Wicks plays incredibly defensively.
If you look at where a lot of teams score from at the moment, it's back half where it begins. Particularly us.
I think Wicks definitely had an off game last week. I find it really hard to understand his impact in each game, as a lot of his work is off camera. But, regularly we see his opponent having an "off night" when do play them

Yeah yeah Ludwig, so your shoe box is smaller than mine, what you don’t have a shoe box? Etc, etc.

I think Kim Reid is an amazing woman and clearly a huge support to Sam’s playing career. I saw some photos of the Qld hotel the partners spent locked into for 14 days and it was pretty ordinary.

Personally I would have stayed home in my comfy home sitting on the sofa eating grapes watching the boys play on telly ....

Wicks continues to be picked. I don’t understand.

I’m asking myself the question “do I have a feel for the game”.

I think he should have been dropped three weeks ago but he even avoids the medical sub role.

You can't just drop him without having a replacement for his role.

If anyone could do it why do the selectors elect to continue to select him? Someone posted recently regarding the players who come through the academy and how they are coached and that tackling ability was one area that seemed to be a strength for them. Wicks being an Academy graduate has that ability and having been in the system for so long would mean that our coaching staff would be well aware of this and his capacity to undertake a role for the team.
When did Chad undertake this role previously?
Why would you replace a defence focused forward with a midfielder?
When Chad returns , and it may not even be this year , we need to remember that he has only played 14 senior games , that he is not the messiah and will be carrying a huge weight of expectations from some.
I feel he has huge potential and could be a future cornerstone of our team but am also wary of the need to realistic as well.
Happy to be proved wrong of course and have him absolutely dominate when he is next selected as many others believe he will.

I am quite surprised that 'T. Hickey' wasn't among the omissions.. under "managed". He is one of our oldest and most important players, and also the one carrying an existing knee injury!! He will need to be managed carefully in finals! But on closer inspection, our ruck opponent this week? Goldstein!! Imagine putting Reid or poor young Joel up against him!! Makes far more sense to give Hickey the challenge, and then rest him next week when we will face the lesser challenge of Zac Smith!!

Disappointed for Dylan, thrilled for Braeden. Tis the merry-go-round of youth that has been this season! There will be more hard luck stories where that came from before this season is out, but it is a blessing and a luxury to have so much quality youth we can't fit them all in!!

No you don’t have a feel for the game. You constantly want to pick the most talented players and put them in roles they are not suited for. Whereas the swans have done rather well, and keep talking about players having a role. We have seen Warner try to play small defensive forward and he was terrible, and got dropped for it. Clearly Wicks is doing what they want him to, despite a poor game last week, otherwise they wouldn’t pick him. If you want a sense of how bleak the small defensive forwards role is I suggest you read Brandon jacks book. I remember talking to Dan Robinson about the role. He said he hated it. All you did was run up and down the field blocking space. You couldn’t go to any stoppages, and there was little opportunity. A parade of players have gone through the club unable to show the discipline to play the role, eg James rose. James rose had way more talent than wicks, yet wicks is still there. I suggest you try to understand this stuff or you will never progress beyond your endless comments attacking players whose job you don’t understand.

Sad that some people on here want to constantly try and shout down others with their over the top opinions. Aggressive opinions are never nice to read.

We all have opinions, how about quietly stating yours in a respectful manner otherwise it will end up like the main board on BF.

On the matter of Sam Wicks, he is obviously doing what the MC want or he would be dropped, his type of role isn't measured in pure easy to read stats, it's a specialist position and Wicks has done it well.

On the matter of Warner, I think nearly all of us can see what he brings but he's obviously not senior match ready as he's not even an emergency so until he is we are premature in trying to push a player out to make way for him.

And please have respect for this forum and other posters, please :-)

Ok. Is there any other available player in the competition (Daniel Rioli) who can do everything that Wicks is doing and give more offensive threat?

Is Wicks’s role the lousiest role on the AFL football field and anyone who does it would have the same output?

Is Wicks elite at performing the lousiest role on the AFL football field?

Good post. Also, I wouldn't waste a Chad-like player in Wicks' role. He could be playing it better right now, but the coaches are obviously seeing enough to keep him and do the selfless things the role requires.

Asking someone like Chad to play that role is wasting the talents he has, which is an explosiveness and offensive intent around the ball. If the coaches want him in the side, I'm sure they'll pick him, but in a role suited to his skills.
