Social media often serves as a welcome mat for cowards. If Belly hit the post in the first quarter no one would give a toss. Few would remember it.
Players don't go out there to stuff up. They don't go out there to not try. I'm proud of every player that pulls on the red and white jumper. They always give their best. Sometimes their best isn't good enough. That's life. We will never have 18 or 22 champions on the park at the same time. That's unrealistic.
Hope James is ok. It was a game of inches. This was one of about 35 single incidents that impacted the result. My opinion is objective truth in its purest formComment

It's so easy to get caught up in the Toby hysteria. Slowmo camera shows he didn't even touch Stevic. Stevic pulled his shoulder back to get out of the way of Toby.

Why should the umpire have to take evasive action in those circumstances? The umpire was standing still and Greene was the one walking towards him.
Your argument is the equivalent of defending the tactic, much loved by siblings, of windmilling the arms and walking towards the other saying "get out of the way, it's your fault if you get hit".My opinion is objective truth in its purest formComment

I was so shattered after yesterday's narrow loss that I could not bring myself to look at this Forum till now. With almost 24 hours of reflection I think I can finally look at things in a more rational and considered way.
We had a wonderful season and so we should not evaluate things simply on those final moments. We need to reflect on what we achieved across the season. Before considering the season as a whole, I would simply say that the Giants outsmarted us at critical times eg blocks to give Hogan marking opportunities, goals kicked out of stoppage clearances where topline players like Toby or Taranto were given crucial space, Toby's goals in the first half coming from rebound opportunities after we had dominated inside 50s.
Many here have focused on the missed shots in the last 15 minutes of the game but we missed opportunities throughout the game. I seem to recall Wilbur missing a soda in the first half and Rowbottom missing a very gettable shot on the run. Paps had several snaps that were off the mark. In short, our inability to finish our good play occurred throughout the game and across many players. Its a collective responsibility rather than one to be pushed onto Bell or someone else. That loss will hurt but should be seen as a step along the evolution of the team.
Turning to looking at the season as a whole, we considerably outperformed the expectations of most football pundits and even those of our fans. The improvement was across many of our younger players. I would single out Blakey, McInerny, Warner, McCartin, Dawson, Hayward and Errol as improving a lot this season but there are others. Our more experienced players like Parker, Kennedy, Hickey, George, Mills, Paps and Buddy led from the front. Our forward line of Buddy, Heeney, Paps, Hayward and Wicks was dangerous and benefited from much better inside 50s and delivery than past seasons. The team also showed amazing resilience to be on the road for so long and yet hold it all together. We gave it 100% all season and I was perhaps proudest for this resiliance aspect of the group than anything else. We also have some very promising players who did not play yesterday but could be future stars - Campbell and McDonald.
In sum, despite a disappointing narrow loss in the first final, we're well placed to build further next year. We face a very interesting off-season. Clearly, there will be a lot of turnover on our list with a number of fringe players to go. We also have critical re-signings to finalise. Happy summer everyone on here!Comment

Unfortunately Bell has a history of missing very easy shots. For a defensive forward he has to make the easy shots as he doesnt offer a whole lot more than the occasional good tackle and chase.
No criticism of his effort and application many just dont think he brings enough to the table to stay on the list.
Opinions vary and we are all entitled to a respectful one.
Im as equally critical of Hickey and Franklin for missing, however, Hickey's goal kicking has been good all year as has Franklin's. They also bring a whole lot more to the table.Comment

Its sad he didnt and hasnt stepped up to the moment a number of times this year. He is a solid player that may get a chance elsewhere my personal view is i dont think he brings enough to the table to get a spot.Comment

And if for whatever reason some RWOers have me on an ignore list - I'm ok with that too.
It does indeed, maybe it's the anonymity? I have almost no social media presence, but some of the stuff even I see reminds me of the rubbish that used to be daubed on the walls of male urinals. The internet has given a huge platform to those whose "shot-house" comments would in earlier times been reserved for those venues alone.
Looking at the game, I couldn't help noticing that a lot of the Gen Next Swans that were down on the day (McInereny, Rowbttom, Warner, Gulden) had never played in a finals game. So maybe they will be better for the experience.Comment

One interesting thing about the Bell missed goal is that if he didn't go for the mark, Fox was in front of Haynes and in a great position to take the mark and certainly would have goaled. But Bell had every right to go for the mark, and Fox rightly didn't try to compete with him for it. I also don't know why Bell had to kick the ball like he was 50 out instead of 20 . He hit the post 3/4 up the post.
I'm not angry at Bell. I'm more disappointed that he's had such a poor season. I was expecting better from him and I know it's not for lack of effort. But he's going to get another year to try to improve.
I am angry at the MC for selecting Bell over Campbell. I couldn't tell if he had a specific task, like tagging someone. So why was he brought into a winning side after a string of poor performances? And why leave Fox out of the 22 and not make Bell the medisub if we wanted to replace Campbell?
The better team doesn't always win. Many things can go wrong in a game, and such was the case for the Swans. We did ourselves in on several accounts. So it goes.Comment

Guys, emotions are still too high to allow viewing of the replay, but from memory here’s my take on the missed shots:
Wilbur: difficult but with his experience should have goaled.
Wicks: gettable, should have steadied. History of missing these.
Tom: not easy but gettable.
Bell: 1st shot: gettable, not too difficult and a very poor kick.
2nd shot: unbelievable miss and unforgivable
Buddy: gettable for him- very poor with a couple of minutes to go- should have kicked it with his experience.
Got that off my chest, so I thought I would assess our team and others who played over a pretty good season:
Harry: good
Melican: average at best
Ramps: good
JMac: good
McCartin: good
Lloyd: average plus
Dawson: very good- excellent
Joey: good
Ollie: average
Paps: very good
Buddy: very good- excellent
Wilbur: good
Errol: very good
Sammy: good
Mc Lean: average plus, limited games.
Fox: average
Hickey: excellent
Mills: excellent
Parks: excellent
George: very good
Heeney: very good- excellent
Blakey: very good once moved to HB
Campbell: limited games, average
Amartey: as above
Logan: as above
Stephens: as above, below average.
COR: as above, average
Bell: poor
Wicks: below average
Chad: missed a lot of games, but good.
Hope I haven’t missed anyone- let me know if I have.
My conclusion is that to be contenders for a flag, we need to have all our players “good” or above. We can have 1 or 2 as average plus at most, and certainly no one below.
Clearly, yesterday’s team selection was wrong but the list is looking ok. Players assessed as “ average” need to improve next year and with smart recruiting 2022 will see us in the frame.Comment
