If Barry didn't like being given feedback then he shouldn't have been punching guys in the head...(or attempting to punch them). He cost the side with his actions. I'm sure the young player was frustrated by Barry's actions. I'm glad that our club encourages feedback...that is how we can improve.

Barry did not always get it right, BS. Just ask that WCE player he king hit! He was a great player for us for several years but then he became a liability as he gave away stupid free kicks and 50s and began to act selfishly. Essentially, many of the players lost faith in him at that time.Comment

With us alone there was eye gouging Primus, that brain fade that almost had him outed for the Grand Final - lucky he got off on a technicality otherwise his contribution to the Swans success might have been viewed significantly differently (and even he admitted in an interview in. The Age in 2017 that he should have been rubbed out). Staker, well enough said. Wakelin - if he had connected, that would have ended even worse.
And that’s just with the Swans.
17 charges during his AFL career for 11 guilty verdicts, 26 games of suspension and $4950 in fines.
That doesn’t even include his radio gaff. Or that post AFL he was a 2 game suspension short of a lifetime football ban.
Great guy? Yup, when I’ve met him. Great player? On his day (of which there were plenty) sure was. Controversial and at times costly to his team and himself? When off his day (which happened too often for one player, his clubs, his team mates, and his supporters to be happy about) yup.
Perhaps the BBBH talk should end so as not to derail the preseason thread (as BBBH is a tenuous association at best).Comment

Wouldn’t it have been better for a senior player to take him for a beer, tell him how much he’s loved, tell him how important he is for the team, tell him how important it is for him to stay sensible and stay on the park.
No, the Swans thought it would be great to have Barry sit in a group forum and have young upstarts give it to him.Comment

How do we not know that the young players giving him leading team feedback (that he didn’t appreciate) didn’t make him feel angry and unappreciated?

Barry's imperfections have been well documented in preceding posts and as I said a few days ago, no one is immune from criticism.....especially just because they are 'important to the team'. Massaging superstars egos has no place in a competitive team environment.
Now please move on.....we all love Barry but your harping is to this 'pre-season' thread what Novax is to the actual Australian Open....an annoying distraction.Comment

A broken wrist should recover in 6 weeks. The Staker incident did irreparable harm to his reputation.
Kind of pointless point this out as you seem blind to any of it anywayComment

Some would think that an experienced, important member of the team would know better.
I guess not everyone can see thisLast edited by 0918330512; 16 January 2022, 11:12 PM.Comment

How many young Swans did Barry protect in his Swans career? If you were a young LRT or McVeigh you would have felt safer being on that field with Barry alongside you. Opposition players most probably left our young players alone because they didn’t want to risk the wrath of Barry?
Barry’s very presence gave our young guys and team confidence.
Would Carlton in 2017 have physicaly gone after a young Mills at the MCG if Barry was close by?
How many parents of young Swans players felt better knowing that Barry was their to protect their sons?
He was an amazing player and his influence on the Swans during his time was unparalleled.
It’s sad that many fans have taken the Paul Roos position of how Barry let the the team down.
I’m glad that Barry finished his career well under Rodney Eade at the Bulldogs. He said after retirement in 2011 that he saw himself as a Bulldog despite being a Saint and a Swan.
It’s good that the Swans and Barry are coming back together now.Comment

The harping continues (and this subject has rightly become it's own thread.....good move mod's). You make a few good points which most would agree with but the fact remains BBBH still let the team and the club down at crucial points of his career.
While he was a champion of our club and definitely contributed to our success, he also had inexcusable brain fades which brought disrepute to our club. Bangalore, in life we have to take the good with the bad. You seem to struggle with this concept.
The last sentence of your post is the pertinent one....and proves his final statement at the end of his career about 'being a Bulldog' was BS and said 'in heat of the moment'. He is a Swan....and while the club rightly let him go, they never turned their back on him.....and thankfully, he has come to realise where his heart lies.
It seems he has moved on from the 'young upstarts'....you should too.Comment

I’m happy to apply Stevo’s interpretation of people’s comments to “heat of the moment”scenario’s.
In Stevo’a interpretation there is nothing to read into Gill’s “you can’t have everyone comments”. Stevo believes that Barry made his comments in the heat of the moment and I assume Stevo also believes that Gill made his comment on the Swans “in the heat of the moment”.
The rules on “heat of the moment” comments will be the same for both Barry and Gill.Comment

Yeah, so look, I largely found this thread a non-event.
But whenever anyone, anywhere, in any context, seems to give even a sliver of allowance or assumption of good faith to Gil, they’ve lost the plot.
A contemptible human. He should’ve been taken out to the woodshed long ago.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

He confirmed his comments on the Bulldogs in an interview with Mike Sheehan a couple of years after he retired. That is hardly “heat of the moment stuff”. He had time to consider his comments before the Mike Sheehan interview.
