I think the issue with Stephens is he actually has more time than he thinks he does . I’m not going to write him off just yet . I had the reserves game on in the background and notice one clearance at a stoppage were he picked it up work his way through traffic and gave a great hand ball . All is not lost

On another note Gould looks so composed except for one late Clanger . He is taking his game to another level and I just wonder if his leg speed is the only thing holding him back from getting a senior game . He’s putting a consistent block of football together atm

I was noting the difference between Campbell and Stephens on how Campbell moves himself into a bit of space before he kicks, while Stephens seems to just blaze away. It's not a matter of speed. Stephens is very fast. I've been saying for a while that he needs to create a few extra milliseconds to think about what he's going to do before he does it.

Gould has a running style of a slow player, but he's actually quite fast. He's another one that needs to keep his concentration up all game. The skillset is there.

True, but if Rampe twanged one his old hamstrings, who do you think would be next in line, Fox or Gould?

Angus Brayshaw is a free agent this year. Assuming we could afford it, if we could tempt him for, say, 5 years @$650K p.a. - should we? The case against is that he will take a spot away from our other players. But wouldn't he be better (or at least a more proven quantity) than at least one of those other players? We could team him with Chad, Rowy, Mills & Sheldrick to take us into the future in the middle after Parker has gone. All of those guys, except for Mills, are a fair bit younger and so he would fill an age/experience spot in our list very handily. Still, he's going to be taking a spot of someone and do we just stick with what we've got?? I know some (e.g. Ludwig) generally reckon we have enough mids and shouldn't get more - but do we really think he wouldn't make our team better? Or that the cost is too high (would only be cap space because he's a free agent - assuming Melbourne don't match)? Interested in others thoughts.

I generally agree with this. I'm still hopeful on Amartey, but even so, we should still be looking to draft a couple of KPPs this year. If Buddy and Reid can stay at the club another year or two, it would give them time to develop. We are looking very solid and with plenty of depth with the rest of the list. A medium forward would also be helpful and could free up Heeney and Hayward for other roles, if need be.

I feel that one of, or both of, Armetey and McLean will ask to leave if they don't get more senior opportunities. Its hard to blame them for that if others come calling. Of the two, I think Armetey has the most to offer going forward as he offers more than just being a marking target. McLean is just too one dimensional in my view.

I think our most immediate short-term need is still another high quality midfielder. The Chad has stepped up, Mills is great but we need another. We really need one of our other recent recruits to step up to this level. Otherwise we may need to try to trade one in. If you look at teams who have top midfields, they tend to have several players who average 30 plus possessions per game. We just do not have this type of accumulator other than maybe Mills.

With an eye towards the longer term future, a key position forward and a pressure forward may also need to be drafted.

My 5¢ worth - the Swans recruiters seem to be able to extract midfielders at will from the second round of the draft (and worse), and midfielders mature conparively quickly. So I don't see a hole, by the time Parker retires Sheldrick, Campbell, Roberts or Stevens will be be absolutely right for a spot in the firsts midfield, and Rowbottom, Warner, Gulden etc. will be providing leadership, and Mills will be the senior statesman.
So rather than midfielders I'd like the Swans to focus their high draft picks / Free agency recruitment on rarer fruit.

What do we think about going after someone like Caleb Serong at the end of next year? He's out of contract in 2023 and can clearly play, but what would it cost us? Adding to that, he was a strong Swans' supporter growing up so there could be some pull to make the change. I think he'd be a great addition to our midfield.

We passed on Serong to select Stephens. Freo are unlikely to lose players given their current form and trajectory.

Yeah, the Swans must look back on that draft and say "What were we thinking taking Stephens instead of Swans fan Serong". I know a lot of us were, me included. Dylan's not a dud yet but is heading that way.

I think the club thought Stephens was a ready made player who could come straight into the team. We were looking for outside speed and he fitted the bill. I suspect he will ask for a trade at seasons end.
