Nothing wrong with JPK going around again next year if both he and the club honestly think it's worth a shot. They will know a lot
better than we ever will. I would never doubt that guys willpower.

Headline I would like to see: 'Swans sign Gould for another 2 years'.

A third year seconds player? Mmm

Yes I wonder as well I confess I haven’t watched many minutes of the VFL season so not really qualified to comment but what are others basing this determination to re-sign him on ?
I found it curious recently when we had a press release that highlighted how close he was to selection and how well regarded he is etc.
Was this done to let him know publicly that we rate him and want him to stay?
If so why do we need to do that for a professional football player surely you should let on field performance tell the story and give the club no reason to not make an offer.
Something is not quite right in this scenario and when we only extended him for one more year last season it didn’t indicate high hopes for future success from me.
Happy for those who do know his game to provide reasons for their desire to give him a contract extension so I am more informed.

A lot of love on here for Gould. It seems Rampe is the main barrier to Gould making his debut. In fact, none of our three tall defenders have been injured this year making it very difficult for Gould or Melican to get a look in.

Both of these defenders have played well in the Reserves from what I can tell. There is a chance that they may ask at season's end to be traded for more opportunities elsewhere. We need to hang onto at least one of them for depth and cover.

Melican shown more than enough previously to be on ither teams radars.
Not sure what it is with Gould, dont think its just Rampes. Been opportunity for them to play him a number of times

Im betting he goes home this year.

If that’s still a possibility (from the Club’s and Joey’s perspective, and they can rehab the injury properly to the point of recovery) then there isn’t a reason why he shouldn’t. Is he the worse player on out list? Would he be the highest paid player in the 2s if he spent time there? If there is a no to both of those, perhaps there might be others who could go before him. If bringing in drafts & trades, would the worst of them be worse than what Joey can produce? But if he’s genuinely broken, if he simply can’t recover (and hamstrings are notorious, especially ageing hammys), it might be time.

Reaching 300 shouldn’t be the goal for Joey. Can he continue contribute & offer value to the team throughout the season - ie beyond 300 … if he gets there?

Might not be Joey’s call at the end of the day.
I respect your enthusiasm for Joey, GS, but I really find it hard to see how he plays on for us in 2023. His body is starting to give up (several soft tissue injuries) and he has lost further pace.

I think we are looking at a natural refreshing of our list at season's end. Kennedy and Buddy most likely will be leaving then. It will be interesting to see if Rampe goes on as well (I think he will). Reid should definitely play on based on his form this season.

Just on Buddy, Whately on SEN radio just said he thinks that Buddy will not be at the Swans next season. For him, Buddy's recent statement tells him that Buddy just cannot accept the Swans' offer. Retirement a real possibility. I respect Whately's views as he is a considered analyst.

Gould wasn't playing consistent football in his first 2 seasons, which may be due,in part, to Covid interruptions. This year he's put in excellent performances every week. He's shown some real flair in his game. He marks the ball well,he take the kick-ins and has a long penetrating kick. Paddy McCartin was out one week with a concussion. That was his best opportunity to come into the senior side. I thought we should have done it, but the MC disagreed.

So here we are with a player who under most circumstances would have already played some senior footy, but instead has played his entire 3 years in the reserves.

Our KPD depth looks good enough at the moment, but could change very quickly. Melican is a free agent next year. BOC hasn't looked an AFL player. And Gould is out of contract. I think Rampe is playing well, but can't be too any years off retirement.

Gould is the one we need to hold on to. We have to commit to playing him next year if he continues on his current path. Every new player is a gamble, but Gould looks a good bet to succeed, so it's a bet worth taking.

Our depth looks good across the ground with few retirements on the horizon, except at key forward where we have 3 good young prospects. We should go for a couple of KPPs in this draft, regardless of retirements or players leaving for other reasons, if for no other reason than we don't have career paths open for other positions.

We might as well do our best to keep Gould, because if we lose him, we will just have to replace him with a draftee who's prospects will be even less certain. We've put 3 years into this guy. Now he's playing at a level that warrants senior selection, but we are in the thick of finals with a settled side, so there's little chance for him to get a go this year. Any replacement for Gould will just be rewinding the clock and starting development again from time zero.

Awesome post. Agree 100%. Even though Gould hasn't debuted, we go backwards if we lose him. The end could come very quickly for a player like Rampe (not that I wish it) just because of his age. I hope we hold onto and play him as soon as the next opportunity arises.

I think Rampe's time is almost now. He provides excellent leadership but he can't do what he used to. He used to be a great player under pressure, today he is less certain. As you say, the end can come quickly
