I don't think we'll rush to exit Rampe, especially not with JPK and possibly Buddy on the way out the door. Rampe's form lately has been better and he does offer a lot of leadership. I don't think there's much downside to offering him repeat 1 year deals until he's done. The main one is that we don't open up a first 22 spot for Gould. But I think we have to work to persuade Gould that we have faith in him and that he'll have a spot soon enough - as soon as Rampe no longer commands his position or when injury inevitably gives him his opportunity.

Not yet it doesn't. Sheldrick and Campbell can afford to wait (if they have to). I think the only players we'd willingly lose are outside our best 22 or Buddy. All opinions are not equal. Gould wasn't playing consistent football in his first 2 seasons, which may be due,in part, to Covid interruptions. This year he's put in excellent performances every week. He's shown some real flair in his game. He marks the ball well,he take the kick-ins and has a long penetrating kick. Paddy McCartin was out one week with a concussion. That was his best opportunity to come into the senior side. I thought we should have done it, but the MC disagreed.
So here we are with a player who under most circumstances would have already played some senior footy, but instead has played his entire 3 years in the reserves.
Our KPD depth looks good enough at the moment, but could change very quickly. Melican is a free agent next year. BOC hasn't looked an AFL player. And Gould is out of contract. I think Rampe is playing well, but can't be too any years off retirement.
Gould is the one we need to hold on to. We have to commit to playing him next year if he continues on his current path. Every new player is a gamble, but Gould looks a good bet to succeed, so it's a bet worth taking.
Our depth looks good across the ground with few retirements on the horizon, except at key forward where we have 3 good young prospects. We should go for a couple of KPPs in this draft, regardless of retirements or players leaving for other reasons, if for no other reason than we don't have career paths open for other positions.
We might as well do our best to keep Gould, because if we lose him, we will just have to replace him with a draftee who's prospects will be even less certain. We've put 3 years into this guy. Now he's playing at a level that warrants senior selection, but we are in the thick of finals with a settled side, so there's little chance for him to get a go this year. Any replacement for Gould will just be rewinding the clock and starting development again from time zero.Comment

At the risk of appearing to lean towards sycophancy I do enjoy your insights.Comment

Surely we won’t unload a player who has done well in the ressies and with no games in the firsts. Let’s not repeat the mistake we made with Darcy Cameron who was sent on his way after 1 game, IIRC! Now Darcy may not be a star but he will play for the Pies against us this coming week, and has been a regular this year. Gould deserves a fair go- we have other players with limited ability who have been given chances, and this is as it should be at a great club like ours.Comment

I think we didn't want to lose Cameron. He was at first stuck behind Naismith and Sinclair and when both of them were sidelined due to injury late in 2019, Cameron was also injured himself and we were forced to use Allir as our main ruckman for quite a number of matches. If he were not injured at the "wrong" time, he might have established himself in the seniors. Then at the start of the trade period, he informed the club that he would like a trade to Victoria to chase more opportunity at senior level. The Club would not have too many options by then.Comment

It's a problem when you have a settled 22 with few injuries. We lost Membrey because he was stuck behind Goodes.
Be a real disappointment if we lose Gould but he's OOC and Crows will come hard for him, they have stacks of cap space and he'd get games there for sure.

Way too expensive, Norf are swimming in cap space, so are Essendon and they want every OOC player! Think Zurhaar is from PerthComment

Port might be more interested in him, were he to want to go home.Comment
