I would like to see the swans lock away Warner on an extended contract sooner rather than latter . Even the Victorian media are falling in love with him . If he has a big final series his value is going to go through the roof . Smart move by the club in recruiting his brother so it lessons him being a flight risk somewhat , but they do both come out of contract the end of next year .

I’m amazed that somehow the other top teams in Geelong , Melbourne , Brisbane and even Collingwood seem to have ample cap space to chase stars from other teams were I feel we will be doing well to sign all our upcoming stars that are coming out of contract .

I honestly don’t think we will chase anyone of note , our organic growth is the envy of most clubs .

That was the point of COLA. Just because it was stripped away it doesn’t mean Sydney is suddenly cheap and that we can negotiate the same way that other clubs can. Not to mention that some of these guys want the limelight, they want to go to parties/clubs and have every girl know who they are. Let’s not pretend that fame isn’t part of the package for a lot of these guys and we can’t match that at the Swans.

We’ll always be behind the 8-ball when it comes to contracts. We can make up for it in some other ways, sure, but not enough to make it an even playing field.

I can’t help but wonder and this is purely speculation but we probably have the most inclusive attitude of any club in the AFL
Does this make us a preferred option when it comes to where players want to play?

We did something similar but more discreetly when we traded a contracted Hannerbery to St. Kilda. At least Hanners mutually agreed with the trade & there was no paying part of his remaining contract involved (Pick 28 to the Saints. Picks 39 & future 2019 2nd rounder in return). It was effectively a salary dump of 4 x $800k pa on a player with chronic injury issues & form. Has played only 16 games at the Saints as a result, which we would've been burden with. That trade looks like a great win for us now in hindsight!

On the other hand we were forced by the AFL to fully honour Buddy's 9 year contract. I wonder without this constraint, how tempted the club might've been to make some sort of decision when he missed most of the 2019-2020 seasons through injury when he was on $1.2m pa? There were concerns his career might be over. Thankfully that wasn't the case.

In F1, it's interesting what's playing out between McLaren and Ricciardo after they both had just publically committed seeing contract out next year. McLaren being seen doing the dirty in fans eyes despite Ricciardo's under par performances.
That is true. Different parties can have a 500 page slab of paper between them all signed up and initialed but if someone gets the @@@@s
or suddenly decides the grass is greener over there and wants to have a fight then it's lawyers (or player agents and managers) at
ten paces and the slab becomes meaningless pretty damn quickly. Contracts, to use politico speak, are more of a guideline than a core
promise. And really their main function is to keep their creators in a style to which they've become accustomed.
Re our trading... we probably saved on Hanners what we blew on Tippo.

What basis do you have for this assumption. Marketing is not necessarily indicative of the player environment. I often feel with the swans that if your in their top dozen or so your in, but if your not you might feel quite isolated and unsure of where you stand.

Key defenders seem to be the position hardest to fill these days, which is why we need to work hard on keeping Gould and even Melican.

Here is a paragraph on the re-signing of little known defender Caleb Graham of GC:

With key defensive depth in short supply across the competition, it was expected the uncontracted Graham would receive rival interest at season's end before the Suns moved to lock away a deal for the reliable 21-year-old.
Ref: Inside Trading: Third club joins chase for Josh Dunkley, gun Swan Jake Lloyd in talks, McDonald-Tipungwuti's call

It's a bit hard attracting a top key defender atm, since we already have a settled backline with the McCartins young enough to be around for quite a few more years. That's probably why the draft is our best option to solidify this position.

I don't have an opinion on your comment, but I understand what Magoo is referring to. The word "inclusive" can cover such a broad range of meanings that it warrants some detail as to what you mean by using that word. It's hard to understand what your point is, because you comment is too ambiguous.

I don’t know how many players we have on our list who are not heterosexual and I don’t care.
Any player who pulls on our jumper and runs out in the field gets my support 100.%
To be honest I think we need an Ian Roberts in our game and I think if any club can it’s us.

I guess thats what I was getting at . If by inclusive , you mean everyone is made to feel part of the team and the overall objectives of the club then I guess Im questioning the basis of your speculation . I remember earlier in the year , I saw an interview with Sam Gray ( I think ??) on his return to SA and how he said that the swans left him totally in the dark as to where he stood, why he wasnt playing firsts etc. That doesn't sound too inclusive to me. Not saying that the swans have a toxic environment but I dont think they are the nirvana club that the marketing might have you believe.

AFL website reports we have commenced talks with Lloyd for a 3-4 year deal and Reid for a 1 year extension.

                            Reid has certainly earned it.

And at the right price, I have no issue with a 3yr contract for Lloyd. He's only 28 (soon 29), been remarkably consistent, is amazingly durable and I suspect if a coach ever had to point a young player to what it takes off field and on the training track to succeed, they'd just point to Lloyd and say do that.
'Delicious' is a fun word to say

Luke Jackson must definitely be off to Freo then.

I know I shouldn't watch Footy Classified when McGuire is hosting but unfortunately I did. There was discussion about GWS wanting to have COLA reinstated due to the higher cost of living in Sydney. The response by McGuire shows he still has no idea how COLA worked. He said it shouldn't be used to top up contracts to recruit players. It's the same old inaccurate spiel.
