Who knows. Hickey has been very good for us. Ladhams has ability and we gave him a 4 yr deal. Enough time to grow up hopefully. Still think 3 weeks for what he did was way over the top.

I thought so too when I watched the footage. But only subsequently have I realised that Woewodin was concussed by that incident and is now listed as an out for 1-2 weeks. So possibly not available for Casey’s semi-final.

I now think the grading of intentional, high contact and high impact is justified. I can see why the Swans didn’t appeal. Ladhams is actually lucky the VFL system allows an early plea which brought the suspension down from 4 weeks to 3.

I tend to agree that we should not write off Ladhams at this point. Working on his attitude and temper should be doable. He does seem to have ability.

There's a better young ruck in SA other than the one Twomey has at 18.

I like Twomey's lists, had myself paying close attention to the 13-23'ish bracket where our two firsts will fall.

What type of player do we really need at those two picks?

Can we stuff up Crows drafting in some way as a Dawson payback? :-)

Trade period and ND such an intriguing part of the season. Will Dodoro the Great be in action again?

Thx for that info. Explains it.

Way too much focus on the ruckman as a player position. A ruckman needs to be a tallish player who is a good footballer. Max Gawn is a star because he's an excellent footballer who happens to be very tall as well. A few good 2 metre or thereabouts footballers are always a positive for a team list. They are not that easy to find. I would be looking to draft tall KPPs this year, but they don't have to be specialist ruckmen.

Toby Greene has been an ill disciplined footballer. He's missed a lot of games because of it, but he's still a great footballer. I don't know how good Ladhams can be, but he can still be a good ruckman, even if he happens to miss some games because of stupid acts.

I think Hickey should go until 2024 when he will be 33.

Hopefully the AFL will put an end to the ruck nomination rule. It looks silly. It is silly.

Article today about Grundy telling Port he wants to stay in Melbourne.

I think you underestimate Gawn’s brilliant skill at tapping to the advantage of his mids. A very very valuable skill in the 6-6-6 formation. A goal can be scored with one or two kicks with an elite tap-man.

I agree the ruck nomination looks and probably is silly. It was introduced to reinforce the ‘no third man up’ rule. Would you also do away with that rule and so allow the third man contest again?

I reckon the ruck nomination rule is one of the least understood. It's connected with the abolition of third man up, but also with blocking in ruck contests. Before they banned third man up, you'd get players arguing they were intending to contest the ruck but were blocked from doing so. And getting the softest of free kicks as a result. Often they weren't trying very hard not to be blocked - pretty easy given the numbers of bodies around most non-centre bounce ruck contests.

So the ruck nomination rule is telling both teams which one player from the other side they are obliged to give a free run at the ruck contest.

If you do away with ruck nomination, you either have to accept players milking frees from not trying hard enough to contest the ruck but claiming they are, or you have to accept anyone can be blocked - Gawn, Naitanui, Hickey and the rest.

Its been reported by some other forum members elsewhere on here that SEN are saying Tom Mitchell now wants a trade from Hawthorn. What do people think about the possibility of him returning to us?

I don't like the whole idea of ruck contests. It's a game within a game. It has a special set of rules that no one seems to understand. I know it's an integral part of the long history of the game, but I would prefer a fresh look at the whole setup of how the ball goes into play when there is a stoppage.

For example, instead of having a centre bounce after a goal, I would prefer a kick-in, just like when a behind is scored.

A game that has 18 players from each side on the ground shouldn't single out 1 player for such special treatment. Almost everyone will disagree with me, because they are wed to the history of the game. That aside, I believe the elimination of the ruckman would improve the experience of the game.

                          So, similar to basketball.

But what about stoppages around the ground?

NO. We are now into damaging players with foot skills, doesn't fit our template

I would be happy with the umpire tossing the ball over his head from the nearest boundary without nominated rucks. Commit as many or as few players to contesting the ball in the air at your risk/peril. Then any tall or high jumping player (Adam Goodes in 2003) can tap or punch the ball etc and then use the rest of their good football skills during the game.

No , he would get in the way of Gus and Roberts who will break through
