I don't suppose the quality of the top-up lists is going to make much difference unless we have a major COVID wave sometime during the season and multiple clubs are having to call on replacements. If it's just an isolated need here and there, I suspect any club calling on top-ups is going to struggle to match it with a club much less affected.

But the way the lists have fallen has resulted in significant variation of AFL experience available to each club. We are probably one of the worst in that respect - Nick Shipley from our VFL list is the only one other than Hanrahan and Dunkley (a handful of games) to have played senior AFL. Richmond and St Kilda lists also look quite light on for AFL experience.

True, and you would imagine the VFL listed players would be the first cabs off the rank should any need arise for topups, given they train regularly with the seniors and would know the game plan than some Northern Bullants players.

Port Adelaide looks to have a very strong top up list based on experience for what it's worth.

            Hi all,

Thinking about Jordan Dawson.. how badly do we miss him?? I am not so sure we will miss him at all!

In 2021 we were 3rd in the comp for marks inside 50.. the only two teams who had more marks inside 50 than us were the two grand finalists. This was a strength of ours.

& who were taking our marks inside 50?? In the top 10 for us were several non-key fwds: Heeney, Papley, Hayward, Wicks, Parker and Gulden.

They werent taking pack marks from long bombs. They were marking low direct precision kicks.

So, how much was Dawson responsible for these low direct precision kicks ??

He was 10th for inside 50s.. not bad but not great either. Ahead of him were other HB flankers .. Blakey and Mcinerney.. inside mids like Mills, Parker, Chad, Joey.. even a ruck like Hickey was ahead of Dawson.

im not arguing that Dawson isn't a fabulous kick, but he was never a major part of our inside 50 delivery. There were 3 ahead of him who were still in the side that played Saturday night.. Gulden, Florent and Heeney. These 3 are also fabulous kicks, they had a greater contribution to our inside 50s last year.. which were so fabulous that they led to us having the 3rd most marks inside 50 in the comp. & those 3 are still around. With more experience we can expect other beautiful kicks like Mcinerney, Blakey and Campbell to get even better and join those 3.

i wish Dawson had stayed as he is a great player but we are going to very quickly realise that he was not the key player we thought he was.

Sorry NB, Dawson was very influential in most of our games last year. A unique type of player not easily replaced.

We will evolve further, just wish Dawson was still here.

Got him in my Dreamteam but wasn't a big scorer at the weekened.

Dawson: he's not a bad player, but he's no Nick Blakey.

And speaking of Blakey, one little thing that I enjoyed in the lead up to the Campbell goal, was in a contest on centre wing, Blakey tapped the ball away from De Boer. Because the ball then headed towards the boundary, De Boer puts his hands up and started appealing for a deliberate. However, Blakey desperately raced to the ball and in the process of keeping it in, slapped it to Gulden, who then instigated the sharp bit of ball movement that led to the Campbell goal. Served Be Boer right, for trying to wangle a non-existent free.

                    Hi Neon,
Thanks for cheering us up with those stats, however we will still miss his beautiful kicking and marking prowess.
Bu there’s no point having a terrific player, which Dawson undoubtedly is now, if his heart is not with us 100%.

Loyalty cuts both ways and we should be critical of our club if it does the wrong thing by a player. Hence I’m just as disappointed that we let George go, though I understand that our finances were compromised due to Covid. Nevertheless, we have retained other players, though on much less coin, who are nowhere near the calibre and utility that George can provide. So we lost one due to his not wanting to be here badly enough, and another due to us not wanting him to be here badly enough. That’s professional football!

Been told there's a rumour doing the rounds that Logan McDonald is being courted by a WA club with a ten year deal !

How did that go for Tom Boyd?

We have to draw a firm line with Logan. No point getting into a bidding war for him. Should be worth a couple of first rounders with an offer like that which we can use to get a replacement.

Logan has signed for another couple of years. Great news!

Emerging key forward Logan McDonald has inked a two-year contract extension, committing to the Sydney Swans until at least the end of the 2024 season.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

That is good news. He obviously loves our club and most importantly, believes in our list and systems.

Yes, great news. I believe he was offered 4 years but chose 2 years. Still its a good result as the 2 WA sides would have been really at him should he have remained out of contract at season's end. Ironically, I think he may be dropped for the Seniors against the Cats given his average game on the weekend.
