We can swap him for his old mate Florent

Tonight on Footy Classified they were proposing a return of Tom Mitchell to the Swans! The argument was that his future at the Hawks might be limited and we are clearly short a topline mid. The lure of a potential premiership might be there. Personally, I cannot see it happening but an intriguing proposition.

Not unprecedented: Warwick Capper, John Rantell, Paul Hawke. Even Laurie Nash & Bob Pratt returned after VFA stints.

It was an entertinign thought bubble. The romantic in me wold love to see his return (I was unhappy with a lot of the 2013-2021 departures), and yes we could do with an extractor, and yes our crop of good swift mids would complement Mitchells deficiencies - but he's about to turn 29.

On the same show Horse addressed Footy department spending. Then nock me over with feather Lloyd and Wilson pointed out that the Giants have to pay overs for players and staff.

Yes, the Melbourne media seem to think that having to pay overs for players means you are a poorly managed club rather than reflecting the reality of the "go home" factor for northern clubs. I think the most poorly managed club in the AFL at present is North which did get a lot of discussion on Footy Classified last night.

Most of those precedents were a long time ago, GS, but I get your point. I think there is a lot of obstacles to Mitchell coming to us, most notably that he has publicly stated that he wants to stay in Melbourne. Salary cap and his age would also be obstacles.

Personally I'm not comfortable with thought of recruiting Tom Mitchell back to club for 2 reasons:
1/ The circumstances he left for just extra $100k when we had cap squeeze.
2/ Letting go midfield bull Hewett as FA without offering him contract (cap squeeze again?), who is exactly what we need now & in better age demographic than Tom Mitchell.

I still hold out hope Stephens can fill in this needed midfield void because he has the talent & now physical build to do so, just seems to lack confidence at this point. Rather see him been given decent opportunities to do so because if we decide to recruit external midfielder he'll be the first to put his hand to go & fear he'll blossom elsewhere after what we've seen with Tom Mitchell & now Hewett.

Looking forward to watch last night's FC which I'd recorded.

I'm not sure that Stephens will ever be a "midfield bull", KSAS. He is more of a an outside run, wing type player who needs the ball fed to him. I think Gus or Roberts are more likely to develop into inside mids. But I agree with you on the downsides with Tom Mitchell.

Footy Classified also had a long discussion last night about North's dire onfield situation and highlighted that they passed over Logan McDonald to take a midfielder in the selection before us. I think that was a huge mistake by them and the panellists seemed to take this view too.

I'd do that. I can't see it happening though.

I'm not keen on Mitchell and can't see that happening either.

Still think we did GWS a solid by not bidding on Tom Green when we took Dyl Stephens. He'd be the perfect heir to JPK and a dream fit with Chad, JMac, Olly, Errol, Braeden, Dyl etc.

                        +1

I was so wanting to get Green in that draft....he would have been perfect for us for the above reasons.

I think we are a worse team than last year with the loss of Hewett and Dawson. Ladhams was a handy pick up and Chad Warner, Florent, Mills and McInerney have improved. But Hewett and Dawson are two gaping holes in our list that are stopping us from top 4.

Not much we could of done about Dawson, but all accounts pointed at Hewett staying but no room for him in the mids with JPK, Rowbottom and Mills. Its a harsh call but it might of been best for the team if we forced out JPK to keep Hewett. Feels dirty saying that about such an icon but I think Hewett was criminally underrated by many posters.

It's been speculated that had the Swans known about Dawson, it may have altered the decision to let George go. I agree we we are not as strong as last year, but other teams are much better than they were also. Paddy has been an excellent acquisition which should be noted

How could I forget Paddy! I probably missed him because he's playing so well I momentarily presumed he'd been part of the team for years!
