I'm quite interested in Lewis Hayes for one of our first round picks. We seem to like December birthdays too for our draftees.

      Oh Captain, my Captain,

I didn't bring my political point of view in at all. You just presumed I did.

It's just an analogy, but in view of your clearly strongly held sensibilities, I will amend it to either . . . . "it feeds directly into your anti-ruckman prejudices. Like a vegan looking at a meat-is-murder billboard." Or "it feeds directly into your anti-ruckman prejudices, Like a young Marxist reading a copy of Pravda." Or "it feeds directly into your anti-ruckman prejudices. Like a teetotaller attending an AA meeting."

Feel free to decide which analogy will enable you to actually think about the post, rather than reacting with knee-jerk umbrage. Your umbrage, whether confected or heart-felt, is lacking entirely in football content, whereas mine was 98% football discussion.

I know, it's a special kind of love though, slightly more Annie Wilkes than the conventional, but it makes for some interesting arguments - which I in fact regard highly.

For example, your point on ruck height is very well made, a leap like Paddy Ryder's makes a nonsense of his actual height.
if this 24 year old in SA has a leap which will allow him to win taps against taller rucks, the bulk that will allow him to act as a bulldozer, and the wind to make second efforts, then 198cm is not a problem at all.

Getting back to football trade matters, I would imagine we will hear within 24 hours whether or not Jake Lloyd is re-signing with us.

My money is on him doing so, but we don't know what godfather offers teams like North and the Saints may have made to him.

I too like the suggestion of Hustwaite who might meet our need for a tall, tough and versatile mid. It would be good to have a 'Henry' in our team too.

Keeler could be good if we don't see Amartey as our forward/ruck going into the future.

Regarding a KPB we already have the McCartins and Blakey as rebounders and intercept markers, and there is also Gould. We need someone who can lock down the big forwards. Is Tom McCartin, or Melican if he stays, that one? Most of the teams now seem to have a player who can shut Bud down. Rampe used to play that role despite his lack of height, being a fighter with grit. That's the kind of player we need to look for.

Another sign of how broken the trade and FA system is - specifically the compensation picks given for departing free agents - comes via the discussion of how Brisbane will likely try to trade for Gunston rather than bring him in as an UFA so that they don't dilute the compensation they receive for McStay.

Gunston is a free agent. He's choosing to exercise his free agency rights. There really ought to be a rule that if an unrestricted free agent moves club, it is as an unrestricted free agent, not some bogus trade. I get that restricted free agents are a bit different but clubs/players shouldn't be able to have it both ways.

Just the other day I was reading Hegel and thought "WTF is he talking about now?", when breaking news came on the radio about Putin and Satanism and I thought "WTF is he talking about now?"

But I often say the same thing about Kevin Sheedy.

Sometimes I say something like that about Ludwig!????

Regarding ruckmen’s heights: how tall is Nankervis? He is the type of ruckman we need- why on earth we let him go I will never know. Yes, he was a bit behind in the pecking order. But surely our experienced coaches should have seen his potential! You just don’t lose players of his calibre.

He became a match winner with the Tigers. Less so with Darcy Cameron, who played 1 uneventful game from memory, and has since established himself at the Pies, though in the absence of Grundy. I’m baffled that we let these players go and then panicked to find replacements. We did well in finding Hickey but let’s not make these mistakes again.

We definitely need to recruit a ruckman one way or another.

Sinclair is retired. I would rate Naismith's chances of playing another 20 games at about 30%. To much risk - he could play but he has had enough time.

Hickey while hard working is 1 or 2 season's from the end. Ladhams is inconsistent and ill-disciplined (though I think he might make it as a regular.

McAndrew - well who knows but if he happens to play more than 50 games I reckon it would be a tall forward rather than a ruck.

I want to float a left field idea - I know it sounds crazy. We need a big bodied midfielder to replace Josh. Does anyone think Gould could be an 'impact' midfielder? I know he doesnt have a big tank but he is strong and a fantastic kick. 20 mins a quarter might be manageable for him.

                        I’d love to get him.

As for the big bodied midfielder meets Gould discussion, how’s about we let Gould play the third tall role and 10 years after drafting someone who’d played the vast bulk of his footy before then as a mid, we release Rampe into the midfield for his final couple of years ????

I guess the problem with that is Rampe's age - at least Gould should have 5-8 years ahead of him if he is any good in the role.

Then we don’t want him Hayden McLean is a depth player at best and we already have a clean type we don’t need to very similar players

Gould has been pidgeon holed as a backman.
