I've always had a problem with the draft points rating system, which I believe was skewed toward the top end to make us pay up for Callum Mills. Interestingly, HPN use a rating system which is about 15% more compressed than the AFL, i.e. they value later picks more highly than the AFL do, which is closer to my own rating.
Picks 14 + 17 roughly converts to a pick 3, and usually it's not good enough to get a pick 3. It's easy to screw up a top pick. So many have failed. Aaron Francis and Weideman are a couple of example who are going cheap this year. It's harder to make a big mistake with 2 picks in the teens, than 1 in the top 5.Comment

The more I think about it, the more I like the deal I have proposed for pick 7. But I'm not confident that Geelong would do the deal (Gold Coast certainly wouldn't). I reckon we should let the Pies know we're willing to do that deal in case it makes them any more resolute about not accepting pick 25 for Henry.
I wonder if Geelong would trade pick 25 and a pick they get for Ratugolea (e.g. pick 33) for Henry and Collingwood's pick 41. Collingwood might settle for that. That would screw my plan.
We could still look to trade up with another club with a pick between 8 and 13 on draft night if it will land us the player we want and that we'll otherwise miss out on.
Otherwise, if we're left with the picks that we have, I like the fact that 14 and 17 are both one pick in front of GWS at 15 and 18. Means we can target the players with less go home factor first. All opinions are not equal. Harry Cunningham has signed on for 2 more years. Great news for us. Feel a bit sorry for Harry if it means he couldn't get a decent offer elsewhere. I wish him the best. Beatson quoted as saying Francis wants to get out of the bubble, Sydney provides that, Adelaide his home town wouldn't. Three way trade with Weideman going to Bombers, Francis to us and we give something to Melbourne.Comment

Probably drifted back in the pecking order to first up depth? Two years on modest $ you'd assume.

I wouldn't have thought a fringe player like Francis would be that complicated, but of course we are dealing with Essendon and Dodoro.Comment

Here's a bit of Beatson on it, and subtly implying that Dodoro will inevitably be a dickhead on the way through

Absolute crickets regarding Melican. He’s contracted for next year so if he doesn’t get traded we could have a strong VFL defence next year with Francis joining Melican and Gould
Before the trade period started I thought St Kilda might have interest but they have since signed Zaine CordyComment
