Of course we would like a bit more from him offensively and goal kicking wise, but right now he’s our sixth forward - after Heeney, Bud, Paps, Wil and Reid. We don’t yet need him to blow games apart, but do all the right things the team demands. On his day, he’ll grab three or four goals. In the meantime, he’s tracking beautifully.
Agree completely. I actually commented on it to my friends at the time. Words to the effect of "What's McDonald doing there?.That"s a huge effort."

It looked like Will Hayward was on Sidebottom who had very little influence. Out marked Sidebottom a couple of times.

I really enjoyed a festival of footy today. Starting with our under-8s gala day. Then we arrived early at the SCG for seat reservation and decided we may as well stay around for the VFL. Enjoyed the experience of watching that and the ground gradually start to fill up. Got my first real look at this Gould they all talk about, and he certainly looks like a solid enough defender to me.

I've been hoping all week that our team would be the one to break that streak. Just a great game, they looked confident and in control pretty much the whole way through. I think the Swans play a more physical style than the Pies and once the Pies quick movement was stifled, there wasn't much else.

Big shout out for the defence but especially Tom Mc who bounced back with a vengeance this week - I don't think his stats tell the whole story. Fox was great again too, also Florent.

It was a game built on great defence but I enjoyed the goals too (Rampe!), especially the sheer joy on Buddy's face after his scoop - drop on boot - goal on the run.

Sunny afternoon, huge crowd, a great win heading into finals, no injuries. A great day and they are set up nicely now.

The people in front of me were having a similar discussion. Seemed like one second McDonald was right there in the forward line and the next, down the other end defending! He was really working hard today.

Will Hayward's improvement this year has been remarkable. Along with that of Warner, Rowbottom, Gulden, Paddy, Fox, Mills and quite a few others. And there's still room for further improvement.

Fantastic analysis of the game in TMP.....with stuff on our impenetrable defence, the deliberate rushed behind (the ump was WRONG), Rowbottom (it's as if he writing it to TB) and more.

The cheering for Rampe's goal save in the final quarter was just fantastic. I haven't heard that sort of noise at the SCG for a hell of a long time. But the great thing is that it morphed from a cheer of excitement and joy for a great play, to something much more - to a sustained loud cheer of real appreciation for the massive effort the team put in throughout today.

It was pretty magical to be there and to be a part of that.

I had a great day also

Sat to one of my best mates who is a Pies supporter.

No matter who we played today we brought a finals intensity in mindset and execution. Very proud of the complete game by our Bloods.

Did agree with my mate though if the equivalents in our team were not playing ie Chad (De Goey), Hickey (Grundy) and or lost Paps early second half like Finnegen for the Pies it could be a closer game.

But that's football and to get into the top4 and or to a GF u need everything going for u and less for the competition

Jake Lloyd’s defence and tackling, particularly the latter.
                    Hayward’s marking when it mattered.
Heeney’s handball to Warner later in the last quarter when Chad, albeit, kicked a behind - it was just outrageous. I honestly don’t know how you do that handball.
Florent dancing around in the back pocket and having the composure to hit P Mc on the lead up to Buds final goal.

Hayward's Marking as the 'get out' target has got us out of trouble multiple times this year. He has taken the next step in that regard and his hands are very solid even under massive pressure. If he and Reid can continue to mark it more often than not, then it adds a huge extra dimension to our play, as it gives defenders confidence there will be someone there to help get us out of trouble if need be.

Do not doubt their outs were significant, but likewise I'm not convinced at all they are in the upper echelon of teams either. For large chunks of today, they really struggled to create any real pathway to goals. 7 Goals for the day and that included some generosity in the umpiring space for at least a couple of them.

Was a great game to watch on tv, so must have been awesome at the ground. Can't wait to head up the highway for finals - this team is so exciting and has such great potential, but their time might be coming a whole lot faster than any of us expected.

Heeneys workrate is ridiculous. Check out the goal he setup by flicking it to Buddy from the goal square - Heeney was the one who kicked it from centre wing and got bumped as he did, yet accelerated forward to be the first person to the ball when it got to the goal square.

                          Massive effort.

Lots of pies nuffies around today, but was a great team effort that has me booking accommodation in Melbourne for grand final weekend.

I think the free kick against Paddy McCartin for walking over the goal line was correct. The rule is set out in TMP article posted earlier in this thread though the writer came to (what I think is) the wrong conclusion.

                            18.11 DELIBERATE RUSHED BEHINDS
                            18.11.1 Spirit and Intention
Players shall be encouraged to keep the football in play.

18.11.2 Free Kicks - Deliberate Rushed Behinds
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player from the Defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the Attacking Team’s Goal Posts, and the Player:

                            (a) is greater than nine metres from the Goal Line or Behind Line;
                            (b) is not under immediate physical pressure;
                            (c) has had time and space to dispose of the football; or
                            (d) from a Ruck contest, hits the football over the Goal Line or Behind Line on the full.

Paddy marked the ball. Thereby by the rules relating to marks (and the allowed actions of other players) he had time and space to dispose of the football (his prior opportunity). By playing on Paddy allowed the defender to close in and pressure him, which is when Paddy stepped over the line.

The umpire penalised Paddy under part (c) above, which seems correct to me. A tough but good lesson for Paddy. Fortunately it wasn’t decisive in the match outcome.

Also someone above queried whether it should have been a ball-up, but the umpire was correct:

                            18.11.3 Taking Free Kick
A Free Kick awarded under Law 18.10.2 shall be taken from the middle of the Goal Line if the football crossed the Goal Line or hit the goal post, or at the point where the football crossed the Behind Line.

(18.10.2 includes a free kick where a player “Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Boundary Line and does not demonstrate sufficient intent to keep the football in play”.

Ps to my post above re the free kick against Paddy: on reflection, I think Paddy did understand the part of the rule set out (so my comment re lesson learned is not relevant).

What Paddy said to the umpire was that he (Paddy) hadn’t heard the mark called (presumably because of the crowd noise). That would explain both why Paddy went to play on and then why he stepped over the goal line.

The period of play from when Rampe prevented a certain goal to the Heeney tap and one hand drop to his left boot for a goal by Buddy is the best of the year I reckon and the crowd acknowledged it bigtime. It was maniacal defence and a opportunistic magical goal.
